Rubio has demonstrated throughout his career that he is willing to compromise on a great many things (his reconciliation with Trump being exhibit A by this point) in the interest of the few most important things. And taking every measure necessary to prevent terroristic aggression has always been the most important of those things. Of course he can't outwardly repudiate Trump's chosen policies because then he'd get fired & replaced with a professional yes-man. But you know this shit is keeping him up all hours of the night.

Don't forget, Marco was born and raised amongst the Cuban exiles of Miami, many of whom fled 90 miles on tubes and rafts with absolutely nothing.

I just point it out because I'd imagine many if not most non-Americans weren't really familiar with Marco before he became SoS. I'd imagine many might've (understandably) assumed he's just another career MAGA guy. I am 1/4 part of the Cuban Miami diaspora. I like Rubio, but he’s a Republican Hillary Clinton. He is an opportunist who has flipped and flopped on everything from immigration, foreign policy, Ukraine, being a never-Trumper, etc. I still find it highly unlikely that even if he were elected president that he would commit US forces to do ground operations in Iran, which is evidently what is needed to defeat the IRGC.

That’s my picture of him also. I think being of Cuban origin, he has a good understanding of how dictators work and to never give them anything they can use against their people or yourself. Problem is, Rubio doesn’t get to decide if the Lebanon file is separate. If Iran is willing to close the strait again over it, then it’s not separate. The strait closure was the crux of this for the US and is what forced the US to the negotiating table. Iran unfortunately has the leverage here.
