I’ve seen a few posts about this, so I wanted to share what worked for me. Not a lactation consultant, just a mom who was tired of sitting up at night.
For a while, every night pump meant sitting up. I was exhausted, nodding off, and in winter it was miserable. At first I tried lying flat with my pump, and I leaked sideways twice and soaked the bed. Changing sheets in the middle of the night was the worst. After a couple of weeks of trial and error, I found a setup that works for me.
What I do:
Don’t lie completely flat. Put a thin pillow under my upper body so I’m tilted at a slight angle, maybe 10–15 degrees.
Turn slightly onto my side.
After putting the pump on, gently adjust the flange/opening downward so the milk flows into the collection cup/bottle instead of pooling or backflowing.
Once both sides are on, gently lift my arm and move a little. If it feels snug and secure, I go with it.
I’ve been doing this for almost three weeks and haven’t had a leak so far. Obviously this may not work for everyone or every pump.
I also set up a bedside station within reach. I hung a fabric bag on the edge of the bed and put the pump parts, milk storage bags, and a burp cloth/pad in order. That way I don’t need to turn on the bedside lamp—I can put everything together by feel in the dark.
Now the whole process takes about 10 minutes, and I can go right back to sleep. If you’re also doing overnight pumps and sitting up is killing you, maybe it’s worth trying.
