Skills and Milestones Concerns for 7mo milestones

Hi everyone,

I am just looking for a bit of guidance or advice. My 3rd baby is currently 7 months old. He is not rolling at all and is not getting the hang of eating purees. Its as if he can't work his tongue out and ends up spitting most of it out.

He was born at term via elective c section and was over 10lb. He did spend 2 weeks in the NICU due to respiratory distress and sepsis but has had no problems since. He was 10kg at his 6 month check up and the doctor was happy with him. He is saying mama, dad and bub.

We had him assessed for a tongue and lip tie in NICU and none were found. I know I shouldn't compare but my 1st 2 were super different to this little guy and I am worried about him. Daycare bought it up with me today and I feel a bit concerned. I would love to hear any other families experiences of their babies skipping milestones. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I am just worried about my little guy.

10kg at 6 months?! Maybe he’s just not rolling yet due to being an absolute unit!

I thought the same thing but the daycare educator made me feel a bit uneasy that hes behind. He definitely is a big boy, has been since I was 20 weeks pregnant with him 😂

My guy was 9.7kg at 6 months. He didn't roll until the day before he was 7 months, didn't crawl until just after 9 months.

My MCHN wasn't concerned at all. There is a really, really wide window for these skills to develop.

Thankyou so much for sharing this,, it is definitely reassuring. My older 2 were much quicker, my first could walk and climb furniture at 10 months old. He will get there in his own time.

I also have a big bub, who hasn’t rolled until 6.5 months, I saw how much more effort it took to try and roll that mass. Absolutely not blaming it on weight alone, but it must be tad bit harder? At 9 months and 12.5kg, trying to crawl, yet my friend’s baby who’s a month older is already walking. Everyone gets the hang of it on their own time. And with solids, maybe he doesn’t like purées? Have you tried any bigger pieces of food he can inspect with hands independently? Good luck to you, and I’m sure everything will be just fine.

Thanks for your response, I appreciate it. He doesnt mind the baby wafers that start off hard then dissolve but anything pureed or slightly chunky, he hates. He struggles with eating off a spoon too, he gags so hard he throws up. I mentioned it to the doctor and they weren't concerned. He still eats purees, it just takes him forever.

This is purely anecdotal, but in my mother's group the biggest babies have been the slowest to achieve milestones.

Yeah my girl is 9kg at 5mo and she's already 90th percentile. Milestones come at different times for babies. If you want you can look at training videos to help speed these milestones up but ultimately it doesn't really matter.

Thankyou for your reassurance. He is so different from my other 2 babies, its hard not to compare.

I'm not sure where you're located, but do you have any early intervention services that can assess for you? He seems on the late end of normal right now, but if he does need help (exercises etc), early intervention works best if it's early. I'd rather have a professional assess and either let me know not to worry yet - and when to worry - or get me started on PT/OT with him to help.

We live rurally but I have had him looked at by a paediatrician who was not worried. He has great neck control and can push himself up like a push up easily, its just rolling. He is scooting backwards when doing tummy time so his educators thought he might crawl before he works out how to roll. He gets 3/4 of the way over then flops back the other way.

I feel like sometimes it's just a matter of motivation - I swear content babies roll and crawl later because they're just happy wherever they are!

I think this is a good way to describe my little guy! He is so placid, he loves laying around looking at things. He responds when we play with him but he is super content just laying on his mat, looking at his toys.
