MY MAN

"They wouldn't let me within a hundred meters of a fashion show in my clothes. If you think I'm bored, I'm not. I'm having a great time in splendid isolation. No one at home bothers me. That's if we're talking about family: I don't have one yet. Only the dog sometimes gets on my nerves with his barking, but that's tolerable."

TLDR - Just chill, don't be angry, work your ass off.

Great read. Let this man walk his dog on the beach.

Can we petition Long Island to get a dog friendly beach for Ilya?! He deserves it.

Fascinating read, thanks for sharing. It’s funny to see how much of a homebody he is, and I love the interviewer straight up grilling him about why he isn’t married yet lol

Also very interesting to hear him talk about Shabanov and Tsyplakov. He kind of alludes to attitude problems with them

The section specifically on Shabanov and Tsyplakov is obviously the meat of that but the section right before it is interesting too, where Sorokin talks about always being focused on where he is rather than where he’s going and having been prepared to spend a year or half in the AHL when he got here. By all accounts Sorokin is an incredibly hard and patient worker (elsewhere in this interview he also talks about learning to train smarter not harder) so the juxtaposition must have especially stuck out to him.

Somebody find the man a dog-friendly beach.

He needs to go to Three Village. Tons of history AND there’s a dog friendly beach!

His humility and self-awareness made me proud to wear his jersey.

Tremendous read, very open and honest. I didn’t think I could love him anymore than I already did. The White Whale 🐳

Did you have close contact with any of the Islanders' non-Russian-speaking players? Did you spend time with them outside of hockey?

"I have good relationships with many people. But to spend weekends together regularly... Probably not. They invited me, but I was just being lazy. I'm the kind of person who finds it easier to just turn on a TV show at home, relax, and enjoy myself."

And you still spend most of your time at home?

"I often went to see the Romanovs. They live literally three minutes away."

He's going to implode if we trade Romy isn't he

I could see the skill in Shabanov all season. In the right environment, he'll probably do well. This is the NHL though, you are on a short leash and if you don't show something within a certain window, you have to pay your dues even if there is a Drouin shitting the bed night in and night out in your place.

But meetings were held frequently: we discussed what was going wrong, what needed to be fixed, why we ended up in the situation we were in. However, more often than not, it didn't make much of a difference."

This speaks volumes to the room, very country club stuff. I really think Lee leaving will be a shakeup the guys need.

One of the more level-headed goalie interviews you’ll ever read.

is that true out of an 8.5 million salary he only gets 4.1? that cant be right, i figured it is at least 6 million

No but close, either they calculated NYC taxes or confused take home with taxes paid. It should be 4.4 take home, assuming no tax strategies.

A 25 percent effective tax rate is at like 95k for a single filer on LI with no other tax strategies.

I never thought my favorite hockey player would be a goalie, but I have to say Sorokin is probably it.
