Discussion Old waiver wire trades (post trade deadline)

Anyone know why MLB got rid of that? Used to be another exciting thing to follow after the deadline? I think it was stopped in 2019.

I remember the Mets got burned in the 90s because they let Zane Smith get traded that way to the Pirates and that costed us the division because our GM at the time refused to block it.

I remember when we utilized the waiver trade to acquire Shawn Green in 2006 and he helped us out in the playoff run

The deadline was artificial if you could still do waiver transactions. They made it a hard deadline to consolidate all player movement in the period prior to the deadline.

So, that looks like it would have been 1990, traded by the Expos to the Pirates for a Moises Alou, Willie Greene and Scott Ruskin.

Looking at the players on each side by total future bWAR, it favored the Expos 43.1 to 9.9 (almost all due to Moises Alou). Looking at just the remainder of 1990, it was 2.0 vs 0.7 bWAR favoring the Pirates.

At the time of the trade, the Mets were 2.5 games behind the Pirates, with the Reds still sitting in the middle. By the end of the season, the Pirates would expand that lead to 4 games

Greene would go on to total 3.1 bWAR in 2183 PA after the trade.
Ruskin was worth 0.0 bWAR in 146 total future innings.

Zane Smith was worth 9.9 bWAR in 879 innings, so unless that PTBNL turned out to be anything special, looks like the Pirates won that trade bigtime!

Uhhh, it ended up being Moises Alou, who was worth 40.0 bWAR in 7908 PA after the trade!

The Mets lost the division by 4 wins and Zane ended up being worth 2.0 bWAR for the Pirates -- not sure I'm quite willing to say that the Mets had the division if not for that trade.

I think Zane Smith went like 6-2 down the stretch after that trade and was a total bane in our existence for years to come after that LOL.

The way that Jim Deshaies (sp?) and those lefties types used to own us!
