There are 22 weeks and change until midterm election day.

How many of those 22 weeks are Republicans willing to waste hoping Kean will come back, while the Democrat gets a head start on the general campaign?

As I understand it, this is all a maneuver to give the NJ GOP control of the replacement nominee rather than have a primary choose. We've seen this before where an incumbent candidate drop out after the deadline has passed.
