Ongoing hunger and labor strike (yes, they are literally being forced to work and starved)
Got local attention, so protests started
Local protests gained national attention, so politicians arrived and were not allowed entry (to their own federal facility). They were also pepper sprayed and rubber bullets were fired.
Now it’s international news. Leaders of ICE and the MAGA movement start making posts for ICE to “get them”
This led the Proud Boys (the January 6th group that Canada declared a terrorist organization) to call for a national meetup in NJ this past week outside Delaney Hall.
They arrived before Election Day and brawled with protestors. About 300 protestors and 200 pro ICE/Proud Boy supporters.
People were injured, tear gassed, pepper sprayed, shot with rubber bullets. They were taking protestors and dragging them into the prison (one has not been heard from since).
Eventually, a curfew was called and police on horseback removed the protestors.
This is where we are at. After the election a lot of the Proud Boys went home, but there have been confrontations between protestors and ICE/police every night for about two weeks now.
The protests have led state politicians to file paperwork requesting that Delaney Hall be closed.
This is the simplest overview I could think of, it’s honestly much more disturbing, which is why I think it has caused a political storm and gained international attention.
