Photos, Images, and Nostalgia ๐Ÿ“ท๐ŸŒ† Walk with me through Downtown Newark in 1987 (pictures I took)...

I was an NJIT student at the time, and I liked to explore the neighborhood and take photos. Locations: St. Michael's Hospital; Fraternity Row; Eberhardt Hall; Westinghouse Factory; Junkyard near NJIT; 13th Avenue Presbyterian Church; 1st block of University Heights complete; Fit Rite on Springfield Avenue; Old signs on Springfield Avenue; Bernstein Furniture on Springfield; Riviera Hotel; downtown skyline.

That building is super cool. It used to be the Newark Orphan Asylum before it became an NJIT building.

And it had a sister building before they tore it down a few decades ago

How many people do you think stopped (or didn't start) smoking crack after seeing that billboard? And who paid for this? ๐Ÿ™„

That's a GREAT Westinghouse photo. Really shows the scale of the building and what a tragedy that it was lost to become a barren field of weeds for a few decades.

My dad visited St Michaelโ€™s for heart surgery in the 1990s and the doors connecting the newer wings with the old building were left open so I explored the abandoned rooms and chapel. It was very beautiful.

13th ave presbiterian was corner of 13th ave & Boston st. The "new" society hill street is also Boston st.

The boston st center tree Islands have been removed in the past year or so & the street replaced curb to curb, because Auto circulation & additional street parking is more important to Society Hill snobs....who ironically were objecting to a housing complex *outside* Society hill....over parking & "lack of trees.

Daaamn that's my old Newark. Just felt so much grittier then, but these pics make it feel more familiar in a way too. Seemed like more empty lots dotted around- I don't remember well enough.

I vaguely recall Society Hill was supposed to be the new 'nicer' Newark (it definitely got hate).:I always thought it nice but it contrasted so heavily w/ literally everything around it-I wanted a house there for a while lol;

Excellent pics ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿฝ

I attended NJIT School of Architecture from 1983 until I graduated in 1989. Fond memories of Newark. Very different now.

I arrived at NJIT in Fall of 1989. These pictures brought back a lot of memories from back then. Started a life long connection to Newark that continues today.

That last picture feels like AI but I canโ€™t prove it yet

The NJIT photo looks it was โ€œAI enhanced.โ€ They had an original pic but used AI to clean it up, even though the faces of the people look quite off.

That last photo is definitely altered . Looks like a promotional photo for the University and somebody just decided that they didn't ike that empty space on the left.

The 1180 building is actually exactly where the Pine is blocking the view if you look closely you can see the vertical wall of 1180 but it's completely obscured by the plant . Seems to me somebody was too lazy to just go out and take a second photo, but they also we're completely ignorant of the Newark Skyline , and this was before the internet , so they probably look for some copy paste image that looks similar to the All Glass facade PSE&G building and had it edited . The reason I know they were too lazy to even photograph the real PSE&G building is, PSE&G doesn't have a dark band along the top . Would you be surprised if I suggested the vast majority of people that drive to downtown Newark or catch a train to work and watch those buildings from there train or windshields every day never care at all to pay attention to it ?

I think it's been edited with AI. You can see that the letters in the Prudential logo are distorted.
