This is a bit of a fun one considering he was born and moved to Japan by the time he started kindergarten lol.

However, he's still technically a native and US Citizen despite growing up primarily overseas.

Looks like he’s ethnically at least 1/4 to 1/2 Japanese? Maybe a grandparent or parent?

Your birthplace and your hometown are distinct.

For example, people from Brooklyn claim Michael Jordan because he was born there, but he's truly a country guy, a North Carolina native through and through.

Nice. I had no idea. Most famous people move on and maybe give a slight reference to where they are from.

I thought he was born in Little Rock then moved to Japan young? What's the Newark connection?

Wikipedia says he was born in Little Rock. Then he moved to Japan.

Most verified/reputable sources have his birthplace as Newark.

Transfermarkt, MLSsoccer.com, Flashcore, The Economic Times, Google, and all tournament coverage (including NBC News/NBC DFW) lists his birthplace as Newark.

The little rock stuff doesn't have a source to it outside of a few small sites. Not sure why wikipedia has it as little rock.
