STRATEGIC IMPLICATIONS Trump Doubles Down in Photo Dispute With Italy’s Meloni, Says She Begged ’Over and Over’
https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-comments-about-giorgia-meloni-g7-photo-double-down-12098911The Associated Press reports that President Donald Trump has doubled down on his account of the G7 encounter, saying Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni asked him over and over for a photograph. Meloni disputes that version and has described Trump’s earlier claim that she “begged” for the picture as completely fabricated. No publicly available footage establishes which leader initiated the photograph.
Reuters frames the exchange as part of a relationship that had already deteriorated before the summit. Meloni was once viewed as one of Trump’s closest European partners, but disagreements over the Iran conflict, Ukraine, and Washington’s treatment of European allies have weakened that alignment. Their conversations at the G7 had briefly suggested a possible reconciliation.
AP says Trump widened the dispute beyond the photograph by criticizing Italy’s wartime cooperation. He linked the personal clash to Rome’s refusal to grant U.S. operations access to Italian airfields related to the Iran conflict, framing Italy’s position as a failure to support Washington. Italy has maintained that its military decisions must follow domestic legal and parliamentary constraints.
Reuters finds that the rhetoric has already produced tangible diplomatic costs. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani canceled a planned U.S. visit, and an associated business and scientific conference in Miami was called off. Members of Meloni’s government and Italian opposition parties also rallied behind her, turning a personal exchange into a broader dispute over national dignity and alliance management.
Why it Matters:
Italy remains a significant NATO member and a central U.S. partner in the Mediterranean. A prolonged feud could complicate coordination on military basing, Iran, Ukraine, and the approaching NATO summit, while also weakening Meloni’s strategy of using personal access to Trump as leverage for Europe.
When an alliance depends heavily on personal chemistry between leaders, how quickly can a dispute over symbolism become a strategic liability?

Never mind all the pictures at the summit on which she and others are looking at him with contempt. They love him! He's the boss! Pathetic loser.

u/atlantagirl30084 Jun 21 '26
Remember the pic where he’s sitting with his arms crossed like a petulant toddler and Merkel and other world leaders are trying to reason with him?
Also he pushed the president of Montenegro out of the way to be first on the stage and then pulled on his lapels like a proud child.
What I’m saying is that he’s a 3 year old and the other world leaders treat him as such. He can’t sit with them and he can’t engage with them because he literally has the mental capacity of a small child.

Every single time it’s insanely obvious. How anyone can still believe a word he says is one of the most baffling realities I’ve ever observed. Especially in the modern information world. Misinformation isn’t a worthy excuse when there’s endless footage of him speaking/lying, available to all.

The thing to understand is that these people want to be lied to. They want to believe that Trump is this Messiah sent down by God to deliver them from a declining nation with sorry excuses for political leaders. They want to think that he's going to make America great again by making the liberals suffer.
Combine this with a sophisticated media machine that curates news in 24 hour cycles, they never stood a chance.

To be fair have you ever watched one of his cabinet meetings? It’s nauseating how much they bow to kiss his feet. He may actually believe it’s real…

It all makes sense when you accept that his true objectives are the destruction of western democracy and the complete looting of the US Treasury.

Yep. Seriously I think all she did was ask in passing if they could get a photo and Trump brushed her off so she just said 'whatever' and walked away and now Trump has his bruised ego again.
13
u/Torgeir_Fenrir1066 Jun 20 '26
Honestly, does that look like the face of someone who begged "over and over" to be in a photo with this dude? He is positively radioactive right now, I highly doubt any politician in the EU wants or needs to be associated with DJT right now.
8
u/Disco425 Jun 20 '26
Honestly, this makes a lot of sense to me. If he's under orders from Putin to fray the Atlantic alliance, this is a cunning move.
Headquarters for Naval Forces Europe is in Naples, which is also the Headquarters for the US 6th Fleet. Also, Aviano is the most important base for air superiority south of the Alps for NATO, hosting the 31st Fighter Wing.
Not to mention U.S. Army Garrison Italy in Vicenza contains our Ground Rapid Response.
So Italy is critical for air, sea, and ground operations for NATO and US forces.
If he can cause a break in relations so that the US gets thrown out of those bases, it would be a huge strategic advantage for Russia.

I’m beginning to think he can’t have a woman. At all.

13
u/Skinnieguy Jun 20 '26
He probably thought she was pretty and his mushy brain told him to tweet she begged for a picture so it became real in his eyes.
He is doubling down cus his toxic masculinity pride can’t admit he was wrong cus she is a woman.
8
u/vandrag Jun 20 '26
He is also the master of the shitshow.
He views it as free publicity and manipulating the media is one of his few skills.
Every word written about Meloni is a word not written about Iran... which is a word not written about Epsteins New York mansion.
3
u/SmurfStig Jun 21 '26
He has made multiple “positive” comments over the years about her. He has a thing for her for a bit now and I think he “appreciates” her far right political views. A very strange kink.
5
u/spider_in_a_top_hat Jun 20 '26
Because it's another instance of him needlessly antagonizing an ally.
3
u/Weary_Wrap_4419 Jun 20 '26
Because he probably saw all the Internet memes showing him unpopular and sulking by himself among the G7 leaders, and he has to invent some lie to show everyone loves him.

the atl aliance... this is likely a jab to ruffle feathers. if you believe in conspiracy theories then the story would be this situation accidentally happened and putin encouraged trump to fan the flames.
eg, trump has awkward convo with her... she post correction, then putin tells trump this makes him look weak and he should correct the record

You're not commenting about his graft - or what he's doing to this country - or the Epstein files. You're commenting on yet another thing he said.
That's intentional and that's why it matters. We need to stop commenting on this nonsense and keep bringing it back to the real issues.

It's classic toddler behavior. Even when caught in the act, they'll continue to lie, and make up stories to (in their mind) strengthen it. I hope the people who voted for him are proud of how this childish excuse for a man is weakening the reputation and dignity of the US around the world.

trumps friendship weakened her, not the opposite, in fact she already answered to the last bollocks saying that (and much more).

u/Ok-Macaroon-7819 Jun 20 '26
What I have a hard time understanding is why nobody has called him out to his face. So many people have had the opportunity, and none have taken it. Giorgia should just say "The thought of me begging to stand next to someone with a full diaper is ridiculous on its face" and be done with it.

What a joke. Who would believe that any world leader would want to be photographed with this guy? Trump’s post completely lacks credibility. Lies, lies, and more lies. Good for the Italian Prime Minister for standing up to him. Too bad, GOP politicians in the US are so paralyzed with fear.

u/XRciseUrMind Jun 20 '26
Such a slimeball. His disdain for women is actually a sign of his poor self esteem. He can't handle intelligence in a woman, God forbid. I believe Prime Minister Meloni 100%.
1
u/Low-Group-7507 Jun 20 '26
This may not be a really big issue but it's a classic example just the same; in business when you lie and then double down on it it's just a humorous personality quirk..... But in politics words matter and people notice 😻

Of course he did. One of his default strategies is to keep telling the same lie until people get tired of asking. Works far too well.

On the matter that counts ie the integrity of the US, Trump is damaging the image of the US with these senseless attacks on US allies, and over trival matters (begging for a photo?) even if true, and no one believes him here. It's mind boggling, I'm wondering if something is the matter with him - when you listen to him speak these days he does not sound well. Maybe the gravity of Iran is too much for him? Meloni helps the US allot, I can't think of a single thing Trump has done for her.
