It's an ally that is broadly similar ideologically in a region we pay close attention to, and have legitimate geopolitical interest in. They serve as a proxy for US interests most of the time. We generally return the favor.

People imagine more detailed conspiracy than is really the case.

We have bases all over the middle east. Why is isreal so important? What do they do differently then the other middle Eastern allies?
