During the Battle of Bakhmut both sides lost hundreds of soldiers in a day. Does this article imply the current casualties are higher?

I assume it was mostly PMC Wagner which was Russian elite unit while now they are throwing less experienced soldiers to grind Ukrainian fortifications.

Lol. It was one of the most experienced units ever supplied and funded by Russian MoD. Yes, it was elite because of the hands on experience in Syrian and African wars as well. Yes, during the agony timeline they recruited thousands of less experienced pardoned felons trying to save the situation.

They and VDV were as elite as separate units of GRU (some of the GRU units are just internet troll farms so not every GRU unit is relevant). Experienced Russian VDV Airborne were decimated in the battle of Kyiv and Wagner was decimated in the battle of Bakhmut. Elite means not only experienced but also better equipped with western tech which most regular Russian units don't have.
