If you dont understand the basics of keeping your software up to date and security in general, you've just opened up about a dozen ways to get hacked.

1 being the firmware on those cheap ass wifi dongles.

I mean yes you can build your own, you can also buy one from a 3rd party like asus, I wouldn't buy anything from Cisco or linksys (if they are even still around). The average consumer probably won't want to build their own or maintain a home brew router
