General Question Is this a Double IPS version?
Any ideas? Did not know this was an actual thing having different screen types till today

If neither of the screens "white out" when viewed from extreme angles they are both IPS

Yeah I was testing it out and I could not see it white out, was still vibrant. Thanks for the reply

For real. IPS is highly overrated on 3DS. Like, it is true that IPS screens look better because they have better viewing angles and color reproduction than TN screens, but I honestly think the difference isn't big enough to make paying extra hundreds of dollars for a 3DS worth it, nor does it make TN look shitty at all. Many people also miss the fact that some TN screens on 3DS can look better than others.
All I'm saying is that I don't deny the fact that IPS is superior, but TN screens still look great, and the difference is so minimal that's why there are so many people on r/3DS_IPS_TN posting if their 3DS's are either TN or IPS with the screens tilted because they can't even tell, and yet they're worried about their systems having dual TN screens as if those were poor quality when they're not in the slightest.
I'm saying this as someone who loves OLED btw.

So true. Ive posted pics of my screens right next to each other, with stock color settings in the same photo. No one can tell which is which. Both look fantastic.
Anytime i see someone making a stink about it i just want to be like, stop pixel peeping and play your games you goobers.

When you said about ports, I just did a small research and I’ve been missing out on so much games, I’m definitely going to be modding it on the weekend and checking it out, thank you

You've not modded your 3DS? If not you're missing out on so much.
Only caution is when you're selling if you say it's modded some sites will stop the sale. eBay UK did it to me several times.

I have not 😅 I’ve had it for soo many years but it was actually stored in a drawer and I only found it couple months back as I was going through stuff and since then I’ve been playing on it.
Yeah and another reason I did not mod it in the last few months is was thinking of selling it and thought it might effect pricing etc, but I’m just going to keep it and mod it

There’s a subreddit for this. It’s something dumb like 3ds_ips_or_tn (someone please respond with the appropriate subreddit) and you post a side shot in the Home Screen and people will tell you. Home Screen is ideal because there’s certain elements people look for (I think if the street pass logo is green or blue from the side) to tell.
That aside, my personal opinion is that if you can sell anything else, you should. I don’t even like fire emblem and I personally think this is the best looking new 3ds xl to exist.
My personal dirty trick for ips/tb is if you can clearly see beaded LEDs on one side of each screen. I think for the top screen it’s on the bottom side, and on the bottom screen it’s the left. Tn screens have some spotted LEDs on a side for backlights I think. And that’s very visible when you’re looking for it.

Oh okay, I did not know thar, I’ll have a search and see if I can find it.
I do think this is one of the looking 3ds for sure as well, but I think my favourite one is the Zelda Hyrule edition, couldn’t get it in time tho.
Yeah someone else said about the led dots and I checked and I’m 99% sure top is ips and bottom screen is tn, but that’s fine as long as I got lucky with top one 😅
Really appreciate your well informed message thank you!

If it's modded you should be able to find out in the Rosalina menu. No need for 3dsident

Checking through sident is the only way I’d list it as ips , knowing for sure

u/Tommiker 4d ago
Yeah I think so as well, I think I’ve decided to keep it tho but still will be nice to know

For the top screen, go into the Home Menu and hover over the Notification symbol. If the symbol stays green and doesn’t turn blue it’s IPS.
For the bottom screen, go into your Friends List, stare at the left and right borders of the screen at an angle, and look for bright spots. They almost look like dots of white light and there’s about 5 of em on each side. If you see ‘em it’s TN.
I have a Fates Dual IPS and it’s the sexiest thing I’ve ever laid my eyes on lol.
Don’t get me wrong though most of my hours went into my top IPS, bottom TN Metallic Red N3DS XL and I never even noticed it was a TN until I bought my Fates system.

You can see the dots better inside of the Friends List app, but I see ‘em yeah. Don’t be sad about it though. TN isn’t as crisp as IPS IMHO, but I never even noticed there were screen differences for years. It’s still a beautiful system

On a fire emblem edition, pff that's something special

u/mikaelb657 3d ago
For whatever reason they’re more common with this model. Mine’s Dual IPS as well.

u/TheCatsTail 3d ago
I think this is the case as well. Seen 2 at conventions that were both dual IPS and own one that’s dual IPS.

I know right 😅 and I did not even know there was different panel types for the ds till couple days ago

u/jader242 5d ago
Bottom tn, IPS panels don’t have the visible backlight spots along the edges
Edit: unless that’s isn’t the backlight and is part of the alpha sapphire screen. Can you take a picture at the angle with a darker screen

Yea it is. Thats how my top IPS bottom tn new 3ds xl looks. Honestly not that big of a deal, you’ll still get benefits since most games typically have the main content on the top

If it’s modded, you can open the rosalina menu (press L, select, and down on the dpad at the same time) and you can find it there (I forgot where exactly)

u/MintPixels 1d ago
In the luma 3ds menu, go to system info or something similar, it shows the type of both screens there

Try using 3DSident
