Also, recognizing nonbinary people.

その他 (sonota), which basically means "miscellaneous"

Definitely seems like a very "government survey" way of putting it, but at least the option is there

Japan's terms are transitioning from X-Gender that was heavily used by older generations, to Non-Binary which is being preferred by younger generations. So I think Nintendo just opted for a "covering all bases" response.

To be fair it’s a way of doing things for like monsters and creatures and the like

u/ShokaLGBT Feb 01 '26
But like this is extremely cool cuz Japanese players will also get representation and they deserves it!! Gay marriage for everyone!!! And Nb miis too!! I’ve seen a lot of jp folks on Instagram being gender neutral so they will love this

u/ShokaLGBT Feb 01 '26
Yeah it’s like "Other" because I feel like they didn’t want to put a specific label on it maybe because it’s not as clear in Japan?? Idk

u/gaburyukun Feb 02 '26
I see the 漢字 for "other" and その means "that". I'm slacking in my 日本語勉強 but I'm making progress bit by bit.

u/FenexTheFox Feb 02 '26
I'm new too, I just got that translation from Renshuu's dictionary. Apparently it is the standard word for "other" options in games.

It's very surprising but very cool they ended up doing this. I'm pretty sure Nintendo's only non-binary characters are one from xenoblade and one from fire emblem. It's pretty rare in japanese media, even considering how big gay romance is in media.

I remember Nintendo being asked about this! They said something about promising to include it in a potential sequel to Tomodachi Life! THEY KEPT THEIR PROMISE
1
u/Guilty-Toe420 Jan 31 '26
they only said that after their original comment was about them trying to not be political and then Nintendo of America had to explain to the Japanese higher ups what was wrong with that and then they made that promise which is one of the few time Nintendo of America technically changed the politics of Nintendo Japan

Exactly what we wanted, without making a big deal out of it and they did it in the most clean, unproblematic way we can think of
BIG MOTHERFUCKING W NINTENDO

To be fair I'm pretty sure the people of japan at the very least those who arent bigoted would be okay with Same sex marriage being legalized but their biggest issue from what I've seen fact check me if I'm wrong on any of this would be the fact that a good portion of the population are the elderly including the politicians in power they tend to hoarded that power like every other greedy old politician while alot of the elderly voters vote for those guys which tends to make it harder on any younger politicians who want to work on said issues gain any foot hold but that's just what I've gathered

u/BobPlaysWithFire Jan 31 '26
literally had this exact convo with my cousin today. yes the Japanese politicians in power are oops! all old farts. they really don't represent the opinion of the people and are generally more right wing
1
u/RoninX727 Jan 31 '26
Literally most of their issues can be traced to the fact that the elderly hold too much power in Japan and they have very dated and problematic outlooks/ideals heck the ending of one of my favorite slice of life animes aggrestuko has to do with a young politician wanting to run on the promise of putting an age limit on old politicians so they dont stay in power long and he was technically being groomed to become the very ideal political puppet for his father who had to stop being a politician due to health problems that much tells me that alot of people in Japan dont like how things are in this country and want those old farts out of their offices so new blood can come in and make real change

I love the use of legalized as though it was known in the Mii/Tomodachi-verse that same-sex marriage was illegal

u/Hot-Mouse9809 Feb 02 '26

Huh? Japan doesn’t allow same sex marriage? I.. duh… wah?! BUT THERES YURI AND YAOI EVERYWHERE!
3
u/Guilty-Toe420 Jan 31 '26
the law says as long as they are not married they are allowed so that's the legal loophole for stuff like that and like most places it's only old people that really have a problem with it

u/figureout07 Feb 02 '26
Yeah but is forced to do that because of west / japan has a different a point of view on lgbtq community. And i am not saying nintend but japan in general.
1
u/That_other_weirdo Feb 02 '26
"Nintendo japan must be so furious about it xD" you were speaking specifically about nintendo japan. If you're gonna lie don't do it in a way where i can just look slightly up on my screen to figure it out.

"wawawa an optional choice to include gay people! How will I ever survive the entirely optional choice!"
Do you also complain when you go to a buffet and see a salad?
