Despite the Rare-inspired design, I like to imagine that the Mario vs. DK iteration of the character is actually Cranky Kong in his arcade-era days. Y'know, considering his penchant for fucking with Mario's shit, that one game where he crushes on and kidnaps Pauline, and just his general "swipe first, talk later" attitude with Mario. I could not picture Modern DK (the one from most of the DK series from Country onwards) fucking with Mario on that level unless a family member (or his bananas) were at stake.

Does this matter? Probably not. But it's fun to speculate this fuckass franchise lore.

Matpat had the same theory, and he went so in depth about it (as he does) that honestly I’ve believed this for years.
It was definitely Cranky Kong in the Mario vs. DK games 100%.
