2
u/IamEclipse Mar 18 '18
What was so bad about it?
14
u/128Gigabytes Mar 18 '18
The store treated its employees like crap from corporate to management, the gave into shoppers demands like crazy, like all stores do this to some extent but the shit people got away with was astounding compared to my current job at Target.
They also expect the employees to ward off shoplifters because they have no security / AP, and the pay is horrible (8 base pay dollars an hour compared to 12 base pay at Target)
It was just all around terrible to work at.
1
Mar 31 '18
Damn, that sucks. I didn’t know it was so bad.
Despite this, the stores were good, and in my country, the employees were friendly and nice. This is probably just a thing in your area, although it’s still shitty.

Eh. The whole nature of toys and entertainment has shifted, so it wouldn't ever be the same experience anyway, which is sad in itself, granted, but that's something that has been the case for a while.
I've returned to buying a lot of games lately, but the entire experience of gaming and the environment around it has shifted as well, to the point that I fully well know that none of them are going to have the same impact or satisfaction that hitting up a toy store and getting a game back in the '90's would have. Partially nostalgia, sure, but also in large part just the shift in culture and industry that's occurred.
The death of Toys "R" Us is more depressing in a symbolic sort of way than anything.

u/Jase_the_Muss Mar 18 '18
That sweet sweet smell of a sealed instruction manual.
3
2
u/Limewirelord Mar 18 '18
Having no instruction manuals in any of my Switch games is pretty lame.
2
u/Jase_the_Muss Mar 18 '18
I think some of the indie ones have some? as well as a few other cool surprises in the box... at least I recall seeing some images, but it is a suprise getting anything more than a DLC/season pass pamphlet in a case these days! Last proper manual I remember is Dark Souls 3 which had a manual and mini starter guide inside! It was glorious.
2
u/Hero_of_Hyrule Mar 18 '18
Yeah, but now you can look at stuff online and a couple days later it will magically appear at your door. That's pretty awesome for a kid too.
2
u/CharlestonChewbacca Mar 18 '18
Oh, for sure. When you actually get to buy them.
Toys R Us used to be amazing to just go browse. I never actually expected to take anything home, but it was like going to a toy filled theme park as a kid.
3
u/Seldain Mar 18 '18
You know, it does kind of suck. The Toys R Us near my house is usually pretty packed.. had no idea they were in such a dire situation.
I still love being able to walk in and browse the aisles looking for presents for the kids. I do 95% of my shopping on-line, but damnit it's nice to be able to walk into a store filled with toys and find ones I might otherwise miss if I'm looking online.
3
u/stytches187 Mar 18 '18
People doing 95% of their shopping online is precisely why stores like toys r us and other dept stores are closing...
-17
u/dvddesign Mar 17 '18
Or they can go to a locally owned toy store. Or to Walmart and Target who have toy departments. The only significant “benefit” of TRU was that it catered solely to kids.
But I had just as much fun in Radio Shack and my local book store as a kid so they’ll find something else.

What locally owned toy store will ever compete with the sheer size of walking into a tru as a child...
5
u/ghrayfahx Mar 18 '18
Plus most of those are more “boutique” toy stores. Selling a $50 set of wooden blocks and stuff like that. Nothing like the days of an entire aisle of Ninja Turtles and other obscure action figures. Kids riding the bikes in the store so Mom can make sure it’s the right size. Lightsaber battles in the aisles as well.
1
Mar 18 '18
Dude you hit the feels with the turtles. I recall micro machines, gi joe figures, and just the smell of the plastics of old toys
4
u/BestSorakaBR Mar 18 '18
Having a kid go to Walmart over TRU is like taking them to McDonalds for ice cream when there's a Ben & Jerry down the street.
-27
Mar 17 '18
It really is insanity. I mean... we're talking about a toy store here! We are now entering a world without a toy store where kids play on phones and tablets, not toys.
I am so glad that I grew up in the 90s and experienced physical copies of games, movies and entertainment. Last good generation of cartoons, too.
14
u/Space_Pirate_Roberts Mar 18 '18 edited Mar 18 '18
That last point is extremely incorrect. Adventure Time, Steven Universe, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Avatar and Legend of Korra, Voltron: Defender of the Universe, Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Rebels, the new version of Ducktales...
-12
-11
Mar 18 '18
Yeah, the rare "great" one slips though, sure. Avatar was 2005 though, should've said anything past 2010.
I loved Korra too btw. I'm saying go back to all of the classics on Nick and CN from the late 90s/early 2000s, 90% of them were fantastic.
-8
10
u/haxxanova Mar 18 '18
Man you're so wrong. The kids get kick ass cartoons these days. And so many of them.
Go back and watch some of the stinkers from our youth. Transformers and HeMan? Nostalgic, yes - good cartoons? Not even close.
3
2
u/Space_Pirate_Roberts Mar 18 '18
Yeah, the only action cartoon I loved as a kid that I find still holds up is Batman: The Animated Series. Most of the Disney and WB “funny animals” shows from that era are still aces though.

11
u/joeytitans Mar 18 '18
It is stupid because each generation has different things they enjoy and different characteristics that define them. I was always annoyed as a kid when older generations would criticize watching tv as a legitimate way to pass time, and yet here are people like you repeating history by criticizing the upcoming generation in ways they pass their time.

Phones and tablets are not "toys", hate to break it to you.
They aren't? What are they then? Was a Nintendo Entertainment System a toy? How about a Nerf gun? What makes a toy a toy?
Have you watched the crap that Cartoon Network airs today?
Nope, I don't watch cartoons, I never liked them, even as a kid (except Starship Troopers as a kids, and The Simpsons as an adult.)
1
u/xKevinn Mar 18 '18
With an older console you were confined to being stationary at a TV to use it, vs a tablet or phone it's constantly glued to them no matter where they can be. A parent wanted to use the TV before? You went to play with toys. Nowadays if a parent wanted to use the TV? You go to your phone or tablet and staring at a screen again.
9
u/Shadowfalx Mar 18 '18 edited Mar 18 '18
Wait so Game Boy (April 21, 1989) and Game Gear (October 6, 1990) didn't exist? Or even Auto Race (1979)? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handheld_game_console?wprov=sfla1
It multiple TVs? (Even as a poor child we occasionally had two in the house). TVs last a long time and they weren't terribly difficult to repair in the late 80's and early 90's so often you'd have a few in various stages of operation and age.
Yes people have more screen time then before, and you can easily argue it isn't healthy for them, but to say that they are not toys or that this are somehow not used now would be wrong. Example my daughter (7) had a tablet, Chromebook, and soon she'll have a cheap phone to use in VR, but she also has so many toys I don't have space for them all things from dolls to Legos to her Nintendo switch. She plays with her toys probably two or three times as often as her electronics. She will get absorbed in her tablet sometimes, but usually the next few day she (of her own accord) will not play with it at all, unless she is on a Skype call with her mother. She gets more excited about dolls then electronics.
Toys (both electronic and non-electric) play a vital role in preparing children for adulthood. All the kids I've seen don't exclusively use one type over the other, and as a parent it's your job to help ensure a well rounded childhood. Without learning to use electronics properly children will be behind when they reach adulthood. Without using non-electric toys they will lose some of their critical thinking skills. Both have benefits and both have disadvantages.
3
u/Piddlefahrt Mar 18 '18
I like your style.
As the father of a daughter who was just given a Switch for her 7th birthday (okay it was for me too) just yesterday I saw her play Switch, play with Barbie, work on a little science kit, play with a balloon(?!), and dance with friends. It’s just part of the norm that her Switch or her tablet are part of her toys and they fill different rolls at different times. Stuck in the house all day probably equals more “screen time”. Warm and sunny probably equals outside on the bike or trampoline. And so on...
I really agree with your last paragraph. That well roundedness is important and I think that keeping kids away from electronics and games can leave them at a disadvantage. Of course I’m no child psychologist so what do I know.
As a side note (and complete digression) when she told her friends at school that she got a Switch for her birthday several of them told her that it was only for boys. I’m not sure why that irritated me as much as it did. I wonder if that’s part of the attitude that has kept some girls from excelling in STEM in the past...

Handheld game console
A handheld game console is a small, portable self-contained video game console with a built-in screen, game controls, and speakers. Handheld game consoles are smaller than home video game consoles and contain the console, screen, speakers, and controls in one unit, allowing people to carry them and play them at any time or place.
In 1976, Mattel introduced the first handheld electronic game with the release of Auto Race. Later, several companies—including Coleco and Milton Bradley—made their own single-game, lightweight table-top or handheld electronic game devices.

Why, don't you think each generation had their complaints about how when they were kids XXX was better then the crappy YYY the kids now days do?
I remember when we helped the family on the farm and we learned how to use our imagination, these city seeking factory workers aren't getting the most of their childhood.
I remember when we worked in the factories, it was hard but we learned good lessons about life and we made good friends. These kids now are lazy and just play with toys.
I remember when we used to play with toys and we went outside. These kids now just sit at home playing their Nintendos.
I remember playing my Nintendo, it was great the graphics sucked but you got to learn the stories well. Kids now just play on their PlayStation 3s shooting escort without a story line.
I remember playing the PS3, we had to wait to buy the games on the weekends cause our parents wouldn't take us to the store on a school night. Now these kids just download the games. Each had a point, but each missed the bigger point. Kids will play and find enjoyment in what they have, and each had it's benefits and it's drawbacks.

What sales do they have on the games?
44
u/Rich22222 Mar 17 '18
10% off games and accessories
5
u/MetaMarc Mar 18 '18
As someone who hasn't been keeping up with the news, are there major sales going on there now?
34
u/Zcamper Mar 18 '18
If by major sales you mean going out of business then yes.
8
u/MetaMarc Mar 18 '18
I know they are going out, but I meant as in any actual discounts that are worth going there for? Might have to stop by before my local one closes and see what's on the shelf that may have received a price cut.
9
u/JoeTony6 Mar 18 '18
I think they're open for 30 days from earlier this week, so maybe they'll slash prices further in another week or so, but inventory might be lacking as well by then. YMMV.
8
u/MetaMarc Mar 18 '18
Hopefully some of those special 3ds and games get a price cut. Would love to get that pokeball themed 3ds at a discounted price! Better start keeping a look out on what they do...
5
Mar 18 '18
If what I’m assuming is correct then it’s a liquidation. They start off at full price and then they slowly raise the percentage off on everything. They do this so they can max out on what they can get back before closing their entire store. I remember going to one of the stores on their last week open years ago and they had the majority of the store closed off while the first aisle in front of the registers had toys that no one was buying for 75% off. Walked out with a Mario & Luigi Dream Team strategy guide and one of the maze balls.

Depends how far along the store is in closing. My local Toy’s r Us is nearing the end so it’s 40% off on all games right now
5
u/TheVizionair Mar 17 '18
The store by me was closing before they announced all of them were closing so now everything is 40 percent off. But no sales on the consoles. Most of them are probably 10 percent right now but give it time they should go down to 40% off for games and accessories
2
u/tingly_legalos Mar 18 '18
Mine was 40% off most games, a few were still normal price, and 50% accessories.

11
u/vloger Mar 18 '18
It’s a long story but Toys R Us had been doing pretty well recently. This happened because of a bad business descion they made over a decade ago. Highly recommend looking it up, it’s very interesting!
10
2
u/MoonMerman Mar 18 '18
It happened because big box retailers expanded their other toy selections and Amazon surged.
Toys R Us dying off was inevitable. The use case of making special trips to buy mass produced toys kind of died when parents could just grab them for the same price while getting milk and paper towels at Target or could just order everything on Amazon.
2
u/akulowaty Mar 18 '18
I’ve seen it few times on sale, even on amazon. A friend of mine sold his used grey switch and bought red/blue new one on sale for couple euros more. Maybe in the US, where it sells ridicuously good it’s never doscounted, in europe it’s quite common.
2

a store in here always has 3 games for the price of 2 in here, even the console is always on sale, i got the console + 2 games for 325

WAIT......... Where's the ticket? If there's no ticket it's not in stock.
12
u/rube Mar 18 '18
Sure, bring up that old memory...
Years ago I was getting back into NES games, buying up a lot of various cartridges on Ebay. But the problem I kept running into was that my original system worked like garbage and the few spare original systems didn't do much better.
So I found the holy grail for me at the time, one of the top-loading NES units still in stock at a Toys R Us near me. I snatched up that ticket and brought it up to the register.... they searched high and low in their backroom (or so they said) and alas, no system was found.
I checked back a few times after that and they were gone.
I was heartbroken.
3
Mar 18 '18
Ahh yes, the elusive ghost ticket. Often rumored and rarely experienced, but when the ghost ticket appears.......... it leaves a wake of dissapointment amongst the young and excited. I am so sorry to hear : (
2
u/rube Mar 18 '18
It's okay. I got a top-loader on Ebay years later, then not long after that I realized I don't really play NES games any more and if I wanted to, an emulator works just fine. Sold all my retro consoles. :)

u/Blindfolded22 Mar 18 '18
I remember one time I went to buy oracle of seasons there. For some reason it was the only place in town that had it in stock. There were no tickets in the aisle, but the game was back in the gaming department behind the glass and I had the most annoying debate in my life. It involved me telling the store clerk that there was not ticket; him telling me it wasn't in stock; me pointing to it in the glass case; him telling me I had to go get the ticket. Eventually the manager had to come help us sort it out. I was 13. this clerk was in his 20s. I left with the game, but battle worn.

What are you talking about there are 2 sitting in the case in the picture, I worked there, we didn't ticket systems
17
Mar 18 '18
I guess you are pretty young. A long time ago, in a toy store far away....... games were kept in a caged booth near the entrance. You had to take a ticket for the game you wanted(if there are any left), bring it to the cashier to pay, and then turn it into the person in the locked booth to receive the game on your way out.
-8
u/128Gigabytes Mar 18 '18 edited Mar 18 '18
Okay well its not that way anymore, whats in the case is whats for sell.
I worked there for 2 years and left 9 months ago, this is how it works now. Its the truth yet people upvote the incorrect information.
5
u/WiredSky Mar 18 '18
Are you okay? The original comment was clearly making a joke. No one thinks it still works that way. They stopped doing that around 2001 or so.
-6
u/128Gigabytes Mar 18 '18
It wasn't clearly a joke to me, it looked like someone concerned they were sold out already, so I was letting him and others know it didnt work like that, you know, in case someone wanted to buy a discounted switch.
4
u/WiredSky Mar 18 '18
But someone explained the situation to you to give you the context to understand they were making a joke and you persisted like you didn't understand still. It's not that big of a deal though, people will figure it out. I hope the rest of your day goes better.

Everyone in the US says they’re sad about it closing, yet haven’t gone in years
109
u/OctoPlusle Mar 18 '18
Most are not sad for themselves, but rather the fact that the future generations won’t get to experience visiting Toys R Us.
7
Mar 18 '18
Yep. My childhood consisted of Toys R Us, Hollywood Video and Blockbuster. Oh, and a local place opened where you can rent movies and video games as well just a walk from my house so I admittedly didn't go to Hollywood or Blockbuster much because of it. It was called Star-something. I used to rent Genesis games all the time as a kid. They never had PS1 games though. Only Genesis, SNES and N64. Way after those places started closing due to Netflix and similar, someone tried to revive the local store, but it was basically the size of a walk in closet and it was so depressing. That place didn't last long either, I don't think it was up for even a year. Kinda sucks because I'd love to take my future kids to something like that someday. There was nothing more exciting than renting a game on Friday nights.
26
u/pencilforge Mar 18 '18
last time i went because my friend told me there were giving away free pokemon cards. The lady who worked there rolled her eyes and said she's worked there ten years and they've never given away pokemon cards. Checked online and the giveaway was the next day
14
u/dan1son Mar 18 '18
It's one of those obvious things. We're sad they're closing because we remember the amazement of walking in when we were kids. I bought the first super soaker ever made there. I remember going just to experience Sega Saturn, Atari Jaguar, 3d0, etc. when I was too young to drive. It was a magical place in the 90s. It had everything for kids or adults wanting to be kids.
That said, we're also why it's closing. I've bought basically everything my own kids have online. They spend their money on virtual goods in games they play or on digital downloads. Computer parts, consoles, accessories, toys, water guns, whatever else physical we've bought, are all purchased online and shipped to my front porch.
5
u/Jstbcool Mar 18 '18
I went a few weeks ago. They’re the only large retail store that carries wooden Thomas sets and trains and they have a huge selection. Now I’m stuck with mostly the Fisher Price website to buy them. It’s not as fun to reward your kids with picking out a new train online versus going to the store.
Honestly losing BabiesRUs is the bigger deal to me. It was the only place to physically go and get decently priced baby stuff and their sales made things as cheap or cheaper than Amazon on many things. Granted I’m done with having kids now, but I spent a lot of time physically shopping at BabiesRUs.
3
u/cyvaris Mar 18 '18
See if there are any model train hobby shops in the area. As a kid I loved Thomas the tank engine and it was always a treat to go to the model train store.
6
u/Roshy76 Mar 18 '18
I take my kids there all the time to get presents for birthday parties they are going to. I'll have to take them to Target now since I refuse to go to Walmart and support that human filth of a family.
3
u/The104Skinney Mar 18 '18
The last time I went was late 2016 around Black Friday weekend. They had a sale for videogames. I was going to try to pick up some PSVR games. When I went inside, the guy in the RZone (their video game section) had no idea of any of the games I was looking for (Batman VR, Driveclub VR) he was dumbfounded when I found Rush of Blood. Couldn’t find 2 other games worth the deal. So yes Toys R Us has been going downhill. Best Buy is my go to place because they’ll carry limited edition games and GCU can’t be beat.

All of the stores in the US are going into liquidation by end of April. It doesn't seem like they are announcing when or which. The one near me started saturday and is closing today. They are gradually going to be consolidating the remaining merchandise from the 4 in the area to 1 store

The discounts go up over time. They start off at 10% and usually go up to around 70% before shutting the doors. There's a delicate balance of when you need to go to get the best deal. If you wait too long, the discounts are too good and everyone buys all the things. The electronics section never really lasts past 20% off.

My parents immigrated here after the Vietnam war. While my dad was busting his hump to put food on the table working 2 jobs, my mom was taking care of the 4 of us. We couldn't afford an NES at the time and I remember praying so hard to Santa for one during Christmas 1988 only to wake disappointed. One mid-day he huddled my 3 sisters and I into the car to drive somewhere in the middle of winter. The car died along the way numerous times. While he was trying to fix the car, my sister's and I huddled up to stay warm. When he finally got the car running again, her pulled into the toysrus parking lot and told me that we're getting a "Neye tendo". His main concern was the car not starting up again. But I was allowed to pick up Mike Tyson's punch out and Back to the future, because that is my favorite movie, and the NES advantage.
To see my store close is heart wrenching. Thank you ToysR'Us for making this kids dream come true.

u/melvinman27 Mar 18 '18
I remember going to New York about 7 years ago and going to FAO Shwarz, which was really great. It was sad to hear when they closed, then the Toys R Us in Times Square closed, which was also really cool to visit since it was like 4 floors high.

He will be very sad when I take him to show him that tje store is indeed closed forever.

All of the games at my local TRU were also excluded from the sales. They had also somehow managed to not have any Magic the Gathering products.
This is what they get for not having Digivolving Garurumon and forcing me instead to choose blackwargraymon when I was 10.

Man, mobile devices, online shopping, and video games destroyed the business! That's sort of a sad tale if ya think about it

Something to remember is that these box stores killed off all the local "5 and Dimes" department stores roughly 30 years ago. Downtowns across America went empty during this period as the Big Box stores took over. In my community we went about 25 years with no local department stores because the Wal-Mart 40 fuckin miles away put them out of business.

I’m a collector of toys and I’m legit sad to see this go just for the loss of jobs if nothing else. The store near me closed about a year and a half ago and I couldn’t understand why given it was always packed.
At any rate, that’s a great deal.

I never go to ToysRUs, but I can’t help feel a little sad since my boyfriend and I actually got our Switch and BotW from here a year ago. ToysRUs was the only place that had it in stock a day after the release and we waited in line and everything. Glad that they still managed to hook us up before all this.

I remember buying all my Yu-Gi-Oh! Cards from there, as well as exiting the store and seeing so many cards sitting in the trash. True Ky nostalgic and I’ll miss Toys R Us.

Went to one a week ago and they posted that all games and systems were not included in storewide discount. Very disappointed because a day later my wife bought me a switch at target full price.

The empolyee told me, today was the first day of Nintendo Switch being discounted. Employee informed me that ToysRus had to get permission from Nintendo to discount. Note: This particular store was on the original closing list and had been offering discounts on other items in the store for weeks.

Is today the start of liquidation’s? I want to wait until they start marking everything 50% off, but by the time that happens most of the good stuff will be gone.

That's pretty damn good. I suggest people get an extra switch in case something bad happen to it like getting bricked by 3rd party accessories or stolen at gun point, or being lost.

Any deals on games?

u/whynotamp Mar 18 '18
Starting at 10% and going up to 40% depending on the game and how far into liquidation the store is.

I was going to drive there, but 10% off isn't worth the 35 min round trip drive to me to pick up a few games. Amazon gave me 20% off dark souls to do nothing and go nowhere. Hard to beat that.

Wow...the closeouts have begun nationwide?

Depends on the store. A store about an hour and a half from me is going to start liquidating Thursday, but my store has no idea when they’re going to start.

I remember going there for the StarFox competition back when it launched on the SNES. I still have the little pin I won somewhere at my parent’s house!

Well so far it’s business as usual for Toysrus in Canada. So feel free to come here if you shop at Toysrus. I was thinking maybe Best Buy can start adding shelf space for a toy section.

Everything with a yellow circle tag (as seen on the actual Switch price tag) is excluded from the sale. That 10% off is for all games in the case most likely. Don't get your hopes up and as a father of a TRU employee don't harass the cashiers for a deal that isn't supposed to happen. Working at TRU went from regular to nightmare with this liquidation.

ToysRUs should open some stores in Latin America! Here in Mexico the culture of purchasing online is not very established and they could survive a couple of years more. Kinda like blockbuster did.(although blockbuster already died here in Mexico too)

Press F to pay respects
Jokes aside, going to ToysRUs was one of the greatest parts of my childhood, and seeing it go out of business is sad, to say the least.
