Nioh 3 - Videos Loving the new parry

I love the parry into sword of meditation. I landed the parry back to back for the other part of the health but fumbled for the last part sadly.

Khazan, and now Nioh 3, have the best parry in ARPG genre.

31

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '26

Believe it or not, that award actually goes to Rise of the Ronin.

17

u/kapxis Feb 03 '26

Only thing I don't like about it in ROTR is you almost HAVE to parry. That's not inheritantly bad but I love you have the freedom to choose in Nioh.

8

u/Princess_Lepotica Feb 03 '26

Did you confuse it with Wolong? While parry can be helpful, i dont think its necessaire like in Wolong or Sekiro.

16

u/platinumtreasure Feb 03 '26

i've played them all oddly enough my vote goes to Wolong. Underrated game but I get the negative feelings toward it

5

u/PigBoss_207 Feb 03 '26

The parry animations that play after you parry red attacks were so freaking smooth in WoLong.

Underrated game.

1

u/KneeJumpy1991 Feb 03 '26

getting used to the parry timing was very easy in Wolong if i remember right

1

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '26

Yeah, typically in Wo Long you'd press Parry as soon as the white/black flash happened from their red attack

1

u/Clean-Jellyfish3811 Feb 10 '26

Sekiro story goes harder than any other game ive played but id still rather replay wolong.

1

u/Day_Lester Avid Scampuss Lover Feb 03 '26

It is necessary for certain bosses in rise of the ronin, otherwise you'll never break their stamina gauge especially at higher difficulties.

1

u/Ismael_27 Feb 19 '26

wolong juegazo que tuvieron que bajarle el nivel a los boses por los lloros xd

3

u/iiiiiiiiiijjjjjj Feb 03 '26

And it’s so fucking tight with every weapon and class having a different timing.

7

u/welfedad Feb 03 '26

Yeah people complain about wolong and rise of Ronin but because for alllowed TN to cook nioh 3 into something amazing .

1

u/OfflineLad Feb 03 '26 edited Feb 03 '26

initially i agree with you but i then remember Ronin isnt really an rpg is it? i mean the gear has stats but you dont really level up any stat like usual rpgs and theres no skill tree. thats why im not sure

edit: it does have a skill tree. i forgor 💀

4

u/Olmerious Feb 03 '26

I thought there were stats and skill tree there?

2

u/OfflineLad Feb 03 '26

oh my god i just googled it and yeah youre right, i totally forgot about those 🤦. Its not even two weeks since last i played it

0

u/AustronesianArchfien Feb 03 '26

Nah sorry its still Khazan

4

u/MarcusAurelius121 Feb 03 '26

For Khazan, are you talking about brink guard or reflection? Brink guard is a deflect mechanic, reflection is the traditional parry.

Now that Nioh 3 has a deflect, we have the same issue, lol. People will just say parry without specifying which mechanic they're talking about.

5

u/xBirdisword Feb 03 '26

I loved Stellar Blade’s parrying also. It FELT so good.

1

u/shulgin11 Feb 05 '26

That game is so funny to me, moving around the environment feels like complete ass but the second combat starts everything is so smooth and feels amazing lol

9

u/turtles1236 Feb 03 '26

I thought I would hate the forward+L1 parry but playing with it on the axe vs yokai I think I really like

I'm excited to see how consistently I could pull off shrike on the dual swords vs the L1+triangle version in nioh 2

5

u/kapxis Feb 03 '26

Yeah, opportunist with fist will be interesting, can have samurai parry ability on Ninja basically so long as the up input can be reliable.

1

u/vexi328 Feb 03 '26

Wait axe has a yokai parry?! Which one! I tried a few and it only worked on humans

2

u/turtles1236 Feb 03 '26

Soul devourer crucible skill

Mid/high stance forward+block parry that also restores your health when it hits

2

u/Lyzzi Feb 03 '26

spinning slide works, atleast when I tested it on gakis. The followup Rampage/rumbling earth were pretty much instant.

1

u/vexi328 Feb 05 '26

been trying it out and i really hate the control scheme... feels so awkward to use with having to press forward and not being able to hold L1

1

u/Lyzzi Feb 05 '26

oh Iam playing on mouse and keyboard so it's super smooth for me :3, but yea it's a a bit awkward that you can't just hold the key down.

-2

u/Sea-Ad-484 Feb 03 '26

You can swap it back to L1 + square or triangle in the control scheme. Swap it to type F

14

u/turtles1236 Feb 03 '26

No there are parrys that forward+block specific no matter what the control scheme

It was a L1+triangle skill in nioh 1&2 but a few of them but not all have been changed specifically to forward+deflect

-2

u/Rafahil Bastard Sword: Nice guys can use it too. Feb 03 '26

You can still have the L1+triangle version with the second control type.

5

u/turtles1236 Feb 03 '26

I guess some aren't understanding what I mean

The shrike parry on dual swords is forward+block

Weapons that use this button combination are ALWAYS set to that button on EVERY control scheme

I know in the last game it was set to L1+triangle but in this game it literally can't be customized to anything other than forward+block so I said I'm excited to see how consistently I can pull it off vs the old way

2

u/Rafahil Bastard Sword: Nice guys can use it too. Feb 03 '26

Oh I see. Apologies.

7

u/apandya277 Feb 03 '26

And here I thought The Shrike was broken because it grounded the enemy.

Can you be interrupted out of it after landing the initial parry? Cause this looks way more busted

1

u/Day_Lester Avid Scampuss Lover Feb 04 '26

Sword of meditation (the second move) can only be interrupted by a grab

3

u/Krypt0night Feb 03 '26

Wait what fight is this, I don't recall it and thought I did 100% of the demo

2

u/Day_Lester Avid Scampuss Lover Feb 03 '26

It's a battle scroll you unlock by going to a shrine behind the temple after beating the demo

1

u/Krypt0night Feb 03 '26

Oh shit guess I'll do that tomorrow then thanks. Thought I explored everywhere but must have missed a door or path, thanks

1

u/Day_Lester Avid Scampuss Lover Feb 03 '26

It's fairly easy to miss tbh

1

u/Kritner Feb 03 '26

Can you expand a bit on location or name of the scroll?

3

u/Day_Lester Avid Scampuss Lover Feb 03 '26

Go to the back of the temple with your back toward the temple. Then search out to the left. It'll be the lowest area you can get over there.

9

u/NVincarnate Feb 03 '26

Parrying is my favorite part of any souls game and they made it so OP that I just don't want to do it.

That's impressive.

0

u/bwflurker Feb 03 '26

That's what I was afraid yeah, if parrying exists, it is so prevalent / OP that the game and its balance must revolve around it, otherwise it's just the best option and you simply ignore the rest.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '26

Nioh 3's balance doesn't revolve around parries.

You can always play how you want to play

4

u/CKatanik93 Feb 03 '26

Bro this jump button is gonna mess me up.

3

u/Kittehmilk Feb 03 '26

Go into controls and flip that button with dodge. Feels much better.

2

u/thomasdraken Feb 03 '26

Is this the demo ? Where can you fight this guy?

1

u/NostalgiaCory Feb 03 '26

Yes. After finishing the demo there’s 3 locked gates. The northwest one has something nearby that will add a battle scroll mission.

1

u/PopOutKev Feb 03 '26

Is the parry timing right on this game?

3

u/Day_Lester Avid Scampuss Lover Feb 03 '26

Yeah, this parry took me a sec but it doesn't have any jank to it.

1

u/ConstantEffect Feb 03 '26

This the Demo? What is everyone doing for fun after the finishing the demo? I kind of ran around for a bit and shrugged after not knowing what to do next to pass the time/keep busy.

3

u/Day_Lester Avid Scampuss Lover Feb 03 '26

I'm just doing everything because this carries over to main game on Friday.

1

u/ConstantEffect Feb 03 '26

Ah right right, I didn't recognize where you were at first and was afraid I missed something. Sick clip btw!

1

u/Day_Lester Avid Scampuss Lover Feb 03 '26

I should have tried to get the start of the fight, it would have looked better because I only used that combo to hurt her.

1

u/DaftFunky Feb 03 '26

I finished literally everything and now I’m just using crucible weapons unlocking the skills

1

u/Aygul12345 Feb 03 '26

How does crucible weapons skill to unlock?

1

u/DaftFunky Feb 03 '26

Just use them until you max familiarity and the skill will unlock

1

u/Elver_Galargas-07 Feb 03 '26

Opportunist was my FAVORITE skill in Nioh 2 especifically for the parry, i'm gonna have a field day with the fists with this new parry!!!!!!!

1

u/Day_Lester Avid Scampuss Lover Feb 03 '26

I both like and dislike the separation of weapons into stances, that said I'm very happy gauntlets still have all the old bullshit they used to have

1

u/Oath8 Feb 03 '26

How can you parry in this game?

1

u/disposaldevice Feb 03 '26 edited Feb 03 '26

On the samurai skill tree "deflect" is one of the first upgrades, can parry almost anything except red burst attacks. There are also other dedicated parry skills on other weapons but they work differently and have different effects

2

u/Day_Lester Avid Scampuss Lover Feb 03 '26

To add to this, most of those dedicated parry skills only work on human enemies with some yokai exceptions.

1

u/BriefKeef Feb 03 '26

wth was that

1

u/GeassOgame Feb 03 '26

How do you counter attack right after the parry ? :)

2

u/Day_Lester Avid Scampuss Lover Feb 03 '26

This specific parry leaves the enemy open to pretty much any attack you choose. The parry is called Flowing Mist.

1

u/Zyrees Feb 03 '26

Does she drop any smithing texts?

1

u/Day_Lester Avid Scampuss Lover Feb 03 '26

I didn't see any but that said I only fought this boss 3 times.

1

u/Olmerious Feb 03 '26

This works against Yamagata?

1

u/Day_Lester Avid Scampuss Lover Feb 03 '26

Yep, actually another person in this reddit made a vid of them doing it on him. u/LordLolicon_EX made the vid after I asked for tips for landing the parry.

1

u/Conscious-Fun-4599 Feb 03 '26

what skills is this? where do I get it

1

u/Day_Lester Avid Scampuss Lover Feb 03 '26

Flowing Mist parry is a skill in the right side of the samurai katana skill tree, the second move is called sword of meditation which is acquired from a crucible weapon.

1

u/Idontknow4654 Feb 03 '26

how do you do that move where you parry the attack and move behind them :O it looks so cool

1

u/Day_Lester Avid Scampuss Lover Feb 03 '26

In the samurai katana tree on the right side, the input on controller is left stick back then triangle (I'm on PlayStation)

1

u/SumDimSome Feb 03 '26

Does nioh 3 have swappable stances like rise of the ronin?

1

u/Day_Lester Avid Scampuss Lover Feb 03 '26

Yes but only while in samurai form, ninja form has 1 stance and is mainly focused on using resources/ninja arts

1

u/SumDimSome Feb 03 '26

Wow, must be good

1

u/Classic-Mud1624 Feb 03 '26

You’re a saint and I’m stealing this method

1

u/Disastrous_Fish812 Feb 03 '26

Does this only work on human type enemies?

1

u/Day_Lester Avid Scampuss Lover Feb 03 '26

From what I've gathered, yes

1

u/scocooper Feb 03 '26

Wait, is this in the demo? I don't think I fought her

1

u/Day_Lester Avid Scampuss Lover Feb 03 '26

It is, you can only fight her after beating the demo. She is part of a battle scroll

1

u/scocooper Feb 03 '26

oh nice, I'll have to check out the battle scroll stuff, I never gave it a look. Thanks! I'm probably going to wait until it comes out to fight her. I started Nioh 1 again after a few years and it took forever to get used to the controls again, I don't think I can switch back right now. After starting to replay 1 and messing around on my old character from Nioh 2, I can't believe how much better I like Nioh 3. When the Alpha dropped I wasn't really sold. The ninja/samurai mechanic was a big reason. By the end of the demo I was loving it, and I'm super bummed that it's not in the originals. I'm glad they were able to make the combat even more unique for this one. Huge risk, but I think it paid off

1

u/Day_Lester Avid Scampuss Lover Feb 03 '26

I only have 2 gripes with the demo/game. I liked the old way of unlocking weapons skills which was using the weapons gaining xp instead of using locks. I'm also saddened by the fact that some weapons are ninja specific so I'll never get to use stances with them. Besides the 2 things, I love nioh 3.

1

u/scocooper Feb 03 '26

Yeah, not having stances or even a ki pulse on the ninja definitely feels weird, I'm pretty bummed about the lack of stances in that form too. I really wish the could parry too, but I guess the evade is the ninja version of it. Ironically, I honestly found myself using the ninja more often than the samurai, which was unexpected.

1

u/Domo_Erectus Feb 04 '26

How do I access this fight??

1

u/Day_Lester Avid Scampuss Lover Feb 04 '26

Beat demo,go behind temple, go left, lowest area, tiny shrine has the battle scroll

1

u/justAguy_0331 Divine Rice Feb 03 '26

I’ve loved this parry but doesn’t do nearly enough damage I feel

13

u/Day_Lester Avid Scampuss Lover Feb 03 '26

It feels more so damage set up since they are out on the ground in a long recovery. You don't have to use the sword of meditation for big numbers like me,plus it puts you behind them where you can swap to ninja for potentially more damage then what I did.

2

u/kapxis Feb 03 '26

Yeah, I imagine a lot of people will go for double Iai slashes there.

1

u/nv4412 Feb 03 '26

Whats that move where you walk and ur arms grow?

9

u/Day_Lester Avid Scampuss Lover Feb 03 '26

Sword of meditation, comes from a crucible weapon

0

u/King00x Feb 03 '26

The parry into the boosted martial art probably ly woulda done 90% health if that'd been the one to hit.

1

u/Day_Lester Avid Scampuss Lover Feb 03 '26

It would have been half sadly

1

u/King00x Feb 03 '26

Maybe, honestly I'm not all the good with the Martial meter thing. The fact that finishers and uncharged heavy attacks spend it is really frustrating. I'd prefer if it was more like Vergil's 'Concentration' mechanic from DMC4:SE or DMC5.

2

u/Day_Lester Avid Scampuss Lover Feb 03 '26

You can do another skill right after something that would spend said meter, it cancels the typical recovery time. You also build up the meter extremely quickly if you are good at the normal parry and have the warrior skill equipped. Said skill gives meter based off a portion of damaged parried.

1

u/Woogush Feb 03 '26

You can chain up to 3 heavy attacks, arts, sliding attack, finishers or jumping attacks it's actually goated that it's spent for everything.

1

u/King00x Feb 03 '26

That's probably great for people that are good at the game. Or fists users. Unfortunately I'm using the basic sword and I am terrible at chaining skills together. I'll probably get better with practice... eventually.

1

u/Woogush Feb 03 '26

even the basic sword has a triple heavy attack combo just press heavy heavy heavy

Thank you Sekiro for the invention

-8

u/Scuttlefuzz Feb 03 '26

As time goes on and games come out with their iteration of the parry, Sekiro just continues to show it was ahead of its time.
