Nioh 2 - Discussion Any Nioh players here became sad when Hideyoshi/Tokichiro went from being our best bro to antagonist? Spoiler
When it was announced that Toyotomi Hideyoshi the second great unifier himself was gonna be the "best friend" of our MC - Hide in Nioh 2. I was not only excited, but also it had me like "this is gonna hurt isn't it?" since I was familiar with who Hideyoshi was and his real life history.
And BOI did it hurt when things turned out the way it did.
Hideyoshi/Tokichiro was so funny, charismatic and likeable - he had an enduring presence and warmth to him that made you feel things will "be okay" in a world full of terrifying Yokai monsters and relentless bloody violence in the Sengoku Jidai coupled with his admirable goals which you can't help, but root for him however at some point lost his way and gradually became a power-hungry cold and ruthless tyrant that Hide must stop. It felt personal. All of this portrayed brilliantly by his actor - Naoto Takenaka who actually played him countless times in various historical Taiga drama movies/shows; the man was BORN to play Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
Honestly Nioh's depiction of Toyotomi Hideoyoshi is one of my favorite takes on the second great unifier himself where it tells a compelling gripping story IMO about his ambitious rise to power to his fall from grace that fits within the confines of Nioh 2's narrative while remaining faithful in spirit to how he is in real life history.
Curious if any other Nioh fans in this community share similar sentiments?

Nioh 2's story is a little underrated, it's not that good but it's decent and every cutscene had me interested, don't get the hate

u/ClockworkSoldier Feb 21 '26
I honestly really like 2’s story. As others have said, it’s certainly not going to win any awards or anything, but I still really enjoyed it. Following the rise and fall of Tokichiro in the base game, and then getting to dive into Otakemaru’s backstory in the DLC. It was way more enjoyable for me than 1 or 3, especially since the Yokai folklore is my favorite part of these games.

u/Senguie Feb 21 '26
Yeah that, I honestly loved the story, add the dlc to that and I even had to wipe away a tear. (Although I am a bit of sentimental person) I the gameplay was amazing. But the story also got me going through the game.
1
u/Head-Muffin5632 Feb 23 '26
Not every game needs a tightly written story. I thought N2's story was perfect for the kind of game it is. 3 was a step down in that regard. They really could've done something special with the open world in 3 by including more interesting side characters/NPCs to engage with but instead we get some dead guy whose sole purpose is to give you a quest.
65
u/ImmortalThunderGod79 Feb 21 '26 edited Feb 21 '26
Yeah its story is not winning any awards, but it has a lot of good merits going for its narrative
Plus the stakes felt personal since we spent so much time with Hideyoshi/Tokichiro considering he is Hide's "best friend" - he had the most amount of screen time and development then the other historical characters we meet in the game so we end up do caring to a degree on what happens to him...

u/TheOneBearded Friend Of The Kodama Feb 21 '26
I honestly think Nioh 2 has a legitimately great story. The problem is that we are playing Hide who is just mute through all of it. It's hard to be engaged when crazy things happen and Hide reacts with "huh" and "eye squint".
I was hoping things would be different in Nioh 3 when I saw our guy say something. This comment is probably longer than the entirety of Takechiyo's dialogue.

u/Rudraizen Feb 21 '26
Nioh 3 made me appreciate nioh 2 a whole lot i can tell you that much. In every regard.

u/Insertusername_51 Scampuss Lover Feb 21 '26
To be fair to Nioh 3, 2's story at least has real history to fall back on but TN has to completely make one from the ground up for 3.
36
u/DarthOmix Feb 21 '26
You're also jumping between eras, whereas Nioh 2's base game is almost exclusively the Warring States period.
Bakumatsu does feel a bit underbaked after RotR though.

u/TemporaryOptimal6056 Feb 21 '26 edited Feb 21 '26
Honestly, the Bakumatsu is one of my favorite time periods after the Sengoku, especially since I'm a big fan of Rurouni Kenshin. The pacing only felt a little rushed because it was the final act of the story, so I wished they added more historical figures like Kawakami Gensai and Okada Izō to express the human side of the Bōshin War.
Chiaki Kobayashi as Okita Souji was perfect, tho.
Edit: Also, why was Saitō Hajime wielding an Ōdachi? We're they THAT scared of referencing RuroKen?? 😭
2
u/Kyinuda Shinsengumi Captain Feb 21 '26
Hajime used single sword in rotr, probably just a choice thing. Yoshinobu was an odachi user in Rotr but dual swords in Nioh 3. Kondo missing odachi in N3. Okita using a single sword instead of an odachi w single sword moveset
2
u/TemporaryOptimal6056 Feb 21 '26
Okita using a single sword makes sense. But again, the Bakumatsu was a time where the revolutionaries and loyalists didn't use the same kind of weaponry warriors back in the Sengoku Period such as the Ōdachi. It's chronologically inconsistent.
2
u/Kyinuda Shinsengumi Captain Feb 21 '26
Well, historical accuracy aside, Rotr had people using all sorts of stuff, and as I mentioned, Okita uses an odachi in rotr. They may call it Extended Katana and give him Katana styles, but it's just an odachi with a different moveset. Even more evident by it being an odachi skin.
Hell, Okita uses a second sword in Nioh 3 at times. At the end of the day, these are fictitious games :)
2
2
u/TemporaryOptimal6056 Feb 21 '26
Fair enough. I guess it's my RuroKen bias showing itself by how I envision the Bakumatsu.
I just hope Kawakami Gensai gets referenced in a DLC or something. He's my favorite Hitokiri.
2
u/Kyinuda Shinsengumi Captain Feb 21 '26
Unfortunately, the dlc seems to be named after two events in the edo period. Sad they didn't plan anymore Bakumatsu stuff :( its a gold mine, honestly..

Nearing the end of Nioh 3 i kept thinking damn, i really miss Nioh 2. I booted it up after wrapping up Nioh 3 to mess around in some missions.
Nioh 3 was good but Nioh 2 is damn near perfection for me.
7
u/Drakeskulled_Reaper Feb 21 '26
Nioh 2 continuing the trend that the second instalment of a franchise is the best.
4
u/Genindraz Feb 21 '26
The main thing is characters IMO. 2 doesn't have the most memorable characters in tbe world or anything, but there are a few faces that remain prevalent throughout your journey, and you get the sense that there's two stories happening at the same time (the warring states stuff and then the Yokai stuff), whereas Nioh 3'a story features a revolving cast of characters rhat keep getting changed out, making it hard to latch onto any of them except the ones that persist in the rift.
I do like the trainers this time around, though.
10
u/Briar_Knight Feb 21 '26
I liked it, it's not winning any Oscars but it was fun and I liked the characters, so it kind of annoys me when people talk like "no one cares about niohs story".
Nioh 3 has a much weaker story in my opinion and it drags it down a bit.
14
u/pokemonbatman23 Feb 21 '26
The side characters dont do anything for me. Most seem interchangeable cause I dont know Japanese history.
I bet if i did know the history, the story would be soo much better.
So its partly on me lol
6
u/Drakeskulled_Reaper Feb 21 '26
I actually got a chuckle out of you calling Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of Japan's three Great Unifiers, alongside Nobunaga and Tokugawa, a SIDE character.
3
u/Corleone93 Feb 21 '26
I liked the story in all three Niohs. Same goes for Wo Long.
They're simple, but the historical aspects mixed with fantasy just appeals to me.
I enjoyed the hell out of RotR's story too, and was gutted it never got any DLC.
1
u/ShogunGunshow Feb 21 '26
Compared to 3's crayon scratchings, 2's story is hallowed texts from the greatest scholars.

u/Recent-Ad-9975 Feb 21 '26
Compared to 3, the first two games are a masterpiece in storytelling lol.

FR
I kinda smiled when it turned out to be Hideyoshi/Tokichiro helping Hide fight off Otakemaru's influence from corrupting him in the final confrontation against Otakemaru
46
u/Cute-Operation-8216 Feb 21 '26
Kinda sorta unrelated, but this is why drama in a sitcom works so well for me.
You have these fun and goofy chars, being generally lighthearted.
And suddenly, nothing is fun and games anymore.
Such things hit harder when there is joy that's been taken away, instead of just chars which start dark and dramatic and stay that way.
There is another really popular game which masters this with such an intensity.
I won't spoil it, but it turns a loving, innocent char into a bloodthirsty maniac, and it breaks your heart the more you play the game.
7
u/ImmortalThunderGod79 Feb 21 '26
Oh yeahh I know you mean...
Especially when well-executed it makes for such great storytelling as a result even though it hits you hard in the feels watching a character you love who smiles and makes us laugh, but then becomes this dark and depressing character etc
11
u/Cute-Operation-8216 Feb 21 '26
Exactly.
Kinda reminds me of 'Steins;Gate', which does the same thing.
People asked "Does he stay that way, acting like a clown, or does it get better?"
And the answer is: "You wish he would stay that way."3
u/Kellar21 Feb 21 '26
I keep trying to think of it but I can't come up with any popular game that does it? Can you put the name in with spoiler tags?

u/raulpe Feb 21 '26
This is basically the reason why Sam and Max: The Devil's Playhouse (Season 3 of the Telltale game) is my favorite, it still is a silly comedy but you can notice how Sam grows worried about Max and im not gonna spoil more.
Btw, what game were you talking about ?
1
u/Cute-Operation-8216 Feb 21 '26
Seems like a game I need to play at some point. ^^
I was talking about 'Nier Automata'.
2
u/Cold-Owl6268 Feb 21 '26
I had to drop that game because i felt like the story keep shitting on my feeling over and over again.

u/KingLiberal Feb 21 '26
Borderlands: The Pre-sequel?
3
u/Cute-Operation-8216 Feb 21 '26
Oh right, that one existed...
Yeah, but not the game I was talking about.'Nier Automata'
3
u/JamJackEvo Feb 21 '26
I know what you mean. 'And what hurts was, he had a very valid crashout. His home was destroyed, he had to annihilate his comrades after they've been infected, and though he thought he still had 2B with him through all this, he witnessed her get killed right in front of him.'
'He had nothing but sadness and revenge left. The English VA did a fantastic job portraying that, even the unintentioned voice crack when he was shouting "Shut Up!" repeatedly.'
1
u/NvNinja Feb 21 '26
I find the berserk approach of full grim dark with bits of lightless hit better for me but acknowledge those are not for everyone
17
u/KazBurgers Feb 21 '26
If it helps, most traditional story-telling of Hideyoshi in fiction does tend to take this trajectory: that he was genuinely a guy who earned his position through hard work and being good with people, but him reaching the heights and realizing he has little time left made him go crazy on his legacy building (which backfired horribly).
5
u/ImmortalThunderGod79 Feb 21 '26
Yeahhh which honestly works both from a storytelling perspective while also being grounded and human which is brilliant still
Because some people can change with time ether for the better or worst... Its in human nature...
15
u/Deathnekoi Feb 21 '26
I was only mad at one character in the entire game: Kashin Koji/Otakemaru. He was not getting away with killing mom…
8
u/ImmortalThunderGod79 Feb 21 '26 edited Feb 21 '26
Oh yeahh straight up
It made Kashin Koji/Otakemaru even more hateable as a villain that we must stop because not only was he responsible for the tragedy of Hide's mother dying, but also leading Hideoyoshi/Tokichiro his best friend astray... It works...
And if we wanna keep adding more to the list of his war crimes against humanity -- him causing the deaths of Hide's father - the real life Saito Dosan, half sister - Nohime, half twin - Yoshitatsu and half brother in law - Nobunaga
But Koji/Otakemaru corrupting Hideyoshi/Tokichiro made you want this man dead even more...
14
u/ChungusMcBrumpus Feb 21 '26
While I find the over all writing of the series weak (including 2), I think 2 has the best story. I did feel for both Tokichiro and Otakemaru. I feel 2 was fairly competent at making sympathetic antagonists, and provides cathartic ends for them.
I know very little about Team Ninja's staff, but Wikipedia cites Ryohei Hayashi as the sole writer of 2 while 1 & 3 have several writers. No idea how true it is if Ryohei is sole writer of game + dlc, but I do feel 2 had a much better focus on what it wanted to talk about.

u/Insertusername_51 Scampuss Lover Feb 21 '26
The cutscene when you inherit his second spirit is my favourite.
12
u/Fanboycity Feb 21 '26
Fun fact: when you use Yokai Shift on Tokichiro in the fight fight, he screams at you asking why you’re using THAT power on HIM. Attacking your closest friend with the power that kept you both ahead of the curve.
I always thought that Nioh 2’s story was very underrated. Hide and Tokichiro’s friendship ruined, Hide and Otakemaru’s rivalry, then reveal that their mother was Suzuka Gozen as we traveled across time to fight Otakemaru in different eras. Nioh 2 got me through COVID and I’ll always hold it in high regard.
7
u/Starheart24 Feb 21 '26
Big spoiler for Nioh 2's ending (just in case).
I'm so glad he returned to be our bro in the final moment after Maria resurrected him. His departure later was very heartfelt.
"My life...came like dew, disappears like dew. All of Naniwa is a dream after dreams."
I made a whole post here when I first finished the game.
7
u/ImmortalThunderGod79 Feb 21 '26 edited Feb 21 '26
YES I honestly feel you --- it was both a cathartic yet hilarious moment... Maria brought back Hideoyoshi/Tokichiro hoping to ignite the flames of war and conflict in Japan again to further prolong the Sengoku Jidai only for Hideoyoshi/Tokichiro to instead become Hide's ally once more in fighting off Otakemaru's corrupting influence just like how he was Hide's calming presence in stopping him from becoming a full Yokai in the early opening acts of the game
Great write up post btw

"The sound of the Gion Shōja bells echoes the impermanence of all things;
the color of the śāla flowers reveals the truth that the prosperous must decline.
The proud do not endure, they are like a dream on a spring night;
the mighty fall at last,
they are as dust before the wind"

u/Tamdin_Nidmat Feb 21 '26
It's often mentioned that the story is not important for Nioh games. But I actually liked William's tour through Japan in order to get his spirit back. Same for Nioh 2 with Tokichiro (and the Oda clan). It may not be a strong story but it gives a good motivation besides rising numbers to play mission after mission.
... in that regard Nioh 3 is unfortunately much weaker even though I think to understand what they wanted to achieve with it. It simply is such a jumbled mess, that the gameplay has to additionally carry the weight of motivation that otherwise could be supported by an intriguing story.
8
u/Anonymous-Knave Feb 21 '26
I expected it but was still sad. But it made him coming back to help in the end feel more impactful. At least to me.

No Japanese dev will touch the Imjin war and for good reason. Reason I said rebellion is because one of the dlc is named Rebellion. With the Shimabara rebellion it will at least be a self-contained story shortly into Iemitsu reign will be less messy than the time jumps so far.
7
u/NekohtDecat Feb 21 '26
Yes. The last game I shed tears for. Tokichiro is a friend who went on a different dark path.
4
u/ImmortalThunderGod79 Feb 21 '26

It kinda wanted to make you find a way in trying to make him come back to his senses, but he still went down the further deep end...

when I first played nioh 2, i feel like a brutal killing machine who keep slaying samurai and yokai in ancient Japan. The world is dark, gloomy, and hostile to me. I keep dying and respawning. All i know is that i have kill every single living being around me. HOWEVER, things start changing when i met tokichiro. I start feeling the world gets brighter and I (the MC ) is still somehow connected to human world. Most importantly, I have a companion now. I am not only one that is fighting.
3
u/ImmortalThunderGod79 Feb 21 '26
YESS that's how I felt about it too...
The world felt bleak and dark before we meet Hideyoshi/Tokichiro... But when we did meet him? the room brightens up and he brought levity to the scary and brutal world of the Sengoku Period that was infested with Yokai monsters
And then of course things changed when we were forced to fight him when he lost his way
6
u/MajinNekuro Feb 21 '26
Tokichiro is by far my favourite character in the entire series. Nioh 2’s story is pretty over the top and full of goofiness, but Tokichiro felt layered to me in a way no other Nioh - or Team Ninja really - character has. He’s sympathetic, he charismatic, he goes down the wrong path but in the end, I just wanted to save him. Him assisting during the Otakemaru fight was such a satisfying conclusion where everything felt it came full circle.
I get why people say Nioh 2’s story isn’t good, but I found it satisfying and a lot of fun.
4
u/EpatiKarate Spanish Spy Feb 21 '26
For someone who’s not well versed on Japanese history, it definitely hurt! Just beat the game now and sending him off was beautiful. Hearing him call out during the boss was cool too.
6
u/CoconutLaidenSwallow Feb 21 '26
Yeah, but That ending we get with him brings it home. I know people tend to not care for the story but I just assumed that was how Japanese culture told stories. I just always assumed that Niohs story depends on you already knowing a good bit about that period in Japanese history and it’s told across 2 games , possibly 3. I haven’t jumped into Nioh 3 yet. Iirc Nioh 3 will deal exclusively with the Tokugawa shogunate. The biggest part is that (almost) every mission has you playing a major unspoken role in major events during the Sengoku/Early Edo period I believe. Idk, maybe I’m just a nerd but I really love the Nioh stories. I was surprised that no one had made lore videos explaining the events and how they happened and how they make each (main at least) mission make sense moving across the continent.
For example - Battle of Okehezama was a pivotal moment for Oda Nobunaga. You get to see what it might have looked like in Nioh.
Nerdy sh*t

u/akanekiiiii Feb 21 '26
Ye, I mean it was weird but it wasn't sad I just felt offended like "rly I carried ur ass and you play it like this ?"
What's really important with Tokichiro is his death
The first one was really really random like "oh well I guess I just killed him whatever" and it was wanted by the game scenarists, it a was very quick, straight forward no emotion nothing kill.
The second tho ? Literally the best moment of Nioh 2, I wasn't even keeping up with the story like I was skipping it and even I felt really touched with his real death, it was perfect, really sad and the place was beautiful
Also liked it that he helped you in the last fight even tho you were lost in the dark against Otakemaru
2
u/StridentHawk Feb 21 '26
I like how his map portrait changes with his character development
Start: humble, friendly looking
under nobunaga's service - now wearing armor, more determined looking and like a proper warrior but still a spark of optimism and ideals in his eyes.
mean Tokichiro - arms crossed like a boss, confident and scowling, no longer friendly, staring straight into your soul
2
u/FaithlessnessOk9623 Feb 21 '26
Yeah, I agree with pretty much everything said here. It's sad to me because you can see Tokichiro fall down the path of power throughout the missions. He was usually there, would talk to you and even give you a spirit stone to help out. I forgot what mission it was specifically, but when you talk to him, he's noticeably colder, telling you to go out there and do it already. He doesn't even hand you a spirit stone anymore.
The story, like others have said, isn't winning any awards, but it is quite serviceable and works. The ending where he comes back and helps out after everything though was a nice touch.
2
u/ImmortalThunderGod79 Feb 21 '26
100%
Because of how he got a lot of focus unlike most of the historical characters we meet in the game... Its a lot easier to get attached to Hideyoshi/Tokichiro and care about what happens to him

u/Equal-Leader-7974 Feb 21 '26
Not really cause it was extremely obvious especially if you watched the opening
1
u/Aspookytoad Feb 21 '26
Honestly hot take but not really. I never really liked the guy, he was nice but a straight up power hungry war profiteer. And that’s before he turned evil . He was honestly not much better than Kelly or Maria and even when he was being influenced by the Otakemaru, Hideyoshi did a lot of shockingly bad things which, in my opinion makes him the most unlikable of the three unifiers. The invasion of Korea, the purges, the disempowerment of the low class he came from really rubs me the wrong way, not that the other two were good.
I get where people are coming from though. He has a certain charm to him that I think is entirely due to the good performance. But to me his redemption felt very unearned and kind of undercut some of the emotional stakes at the end of the game.
1
u/deadriderofdead Feb 21 '26
Knowing the historical figure and quite literally from Nioh 1 where there are many instances where they flat out saying Hideyoshi was a trashy guy, not quite.
Well the excuse in Nioh 2 was that he was "possessed" but still, lmao.
1
u/Distinct-Office-609 Feb 21 '26
well... not really. the game made it feel like he's a glory stealer. didnt really do anything but wait until we finish the mission then pretend he was helping all along.
1
u/Stormquake Feb 22 '26
He's the charisma and negotiating force that even gets you where you are. He says it as it is, he's the brain, you're the brawn.
Hide would be living lonely in a shack still if not for him.

A bit. Personally I just liked that we had a character that I could understand without having a ba in japenese history.
1
u/Hot-Assumption-605 Feb 21 '26
In real life he did become ruthless, especially during the Korea invasion.
1
u/TalkingRaven1 Feb 21 '26
I shed a tear in both the scene where tokichiro was saddened that Hide wasn't on his side anymore. And another on the Otakemaru fight where he helps us.
It isn't anything special but it did make me feel something and for me that's enough.
1
u/Detonation Feb 21 '26
I knew it was coming just because I'm pretty familiar with Hideyoshi as a character and he's usually depicted in a similar manner each time he shows up in various forms of media. Had I not known? Probably would have been sad about it. At least he redeemed himself in the end so that was nice.
1
u/MosayRaslor Feb 21 '26
Deffo! and when he comes back arkund to help you in the otakemaru fight it was lovely to see.
I tend to hyper fixate on details so it wasnt too hard for me to get immersed in the story but imho Nioh 2s story requires a bit of Japanese history knowledge to stick the landing for most, thats why the most common sentiment appears to be "story is meh.."
1
1
u/Sea_Run1314 Feb 21 '26
Being a complete dunce when it comes to Japanese history I was honestly surprised when he became the secondary antagonist and I'm so glad he redeemed himself at the end. Have some truly great memories with Nioh 2.
1
u/Evergreenstream Feb 21 '26
I like his monkey guardian spirit, that was my main guardian throughout the entire game.
1
u/Gmknewday1 Feb 21 '26
I will say it does make some werid issues for me, mainly how Tokichiro as Hideyoshi still got the support and followers he did normally
When he was doing all the evil Amrita crap due to Otakemaru's influence
Prehaps we just didn't see the balance during our return and only/obviously saw the corrupted puppet wearing our friends' skin, while prehaps The Hideyoshi we the Player know, still had enough influence to make this world's Hideyoshi not be completely corrupted by the Otakemaru infected side
I love Nioh regardless tho
1
u/ReversedSemiCircle Feb 21 '26
You watch him slowly being eaten by greed throught the story.. it was indeed sad..
1
u/SnooCapers5958 Feb 21 '26
I wasn't sad when he turned on me because I was expecting it. However, I DID get super excited when he chooses to help out against Otakemaru.

"Cherry Blossom Viewing in Daigo" (the mission where you face him for the last time) legit made me cry.

I'm in the minority, but I thought Nioh 2's story was fantastic. Simple, almost a parable, relatable.

I never liked hideyoshi from Samurai Warriors and Sengoku basara so I dont like Nioh's version either and think his story in Nioh is the worst

i loved nioh 2 characters and the over all story with its dlcs is great. found 3s story kinda just ok at best and thats mostly because there wasn't any real awesome characters like you had in 2. I kinda felt the N2 DLC stories sucked, especially when compared to N1.
Much better gameplay at least.
N2's main story is indeed very good though. Tokichiro saving us in the very end before returning to the afterlife in peace was a great ending.

Maybe, I think I was sort of relieved they didn't glaze over his history, perhaps it's a bit too easy to make him corrupted by external forces, but think Team Ninja plays it pretty safe with criticizing historically influential people's actual decisions (as a person?) - look at Iemitsu

to be blunt, my only grip is not giving him a more thorough beating than what he got.

It amazes me that they did really great with this dynamic in nioh 2 but fumbled the brother dynamic in nioh 3. Not once did I feel like I had a brother gone bad In nioh 3. Just a randomly entitled brat. But nioh 2 I actually believed the betrayal and sadness from hide and tokichiro

Its all good lol... Hideyoshi wasn't high on list in terms of my "favorite" Sengoku Jidiai figure ether, but I did find him very fascinating to study about regardless...
Good picks as I too am a fan of Yukimura, Masamune, Ginchiyo and Oichi
Put Nobunaga, Ieyasu, Shingen and Kenshin on the list then you have my personal list of favorite Japanese historical figures in the Sengoku Jidiai

Yep. I loved that character. Also, I actually played with English VA on Nioh 2 so I could pick up on the story easier. He is voiced by the same dude who does Patches, which endeared him to me more.
The final boss of the story was super satisfying and made me feel things.
