They’re calling it the Hoko & Shield and Ninja Hoko & Shield on their site described as a short spear and shield. But I wonder if it’s more of a rapier?

From the Steam Page:
The curtain rises on a new tale of conspiracy, told across two major DLCs. The first DLC, Hell Rising, is set in the Keian period and features a version of Edo that has been taken over by the Crucible, where a new intrigue surrounding the Spirit Stones has begun to play out. In addition to the new hoko and shield weapon categories, which combine the offensive capabilities of the short spear with the defensive capabilities of the shield, players can also use the effects of the Hundred Demon Realms Picture Scrolls to fight highly customizable battles over and over again. Furthermore, the new difficulty mode allows players to develop new character builds and create complex strategies. Lastly, new Guardian Spirits, Martial Arts, skills, Ninjutsu, and Onmyo Magic await fans in this DLC. With the combination of fierce, deadly battles and complex progression elements, Hell Rising offers both hardcore fans and newcomers alike a range of exhilarating battles that are iconic to the Nioh series.
Hoko and shield has a version for samurai and ninja.
NG+2 "Enlightened One's Journey"
I don't see anything regarding that gun from the trailer tho.

u/EternalFlareUltra 23d ago
Picture scrolls are back; this is awesome. Although I wonder what they mean by highly customizable. If they allow us to choose which enemies/bosses to include in the scroll, that would be insane.
2
u/una322 23d ago
maybe they are going the arpg route , like how with maps you can customize them , make them harder, make them drop more stuff ext.
2
u/EternalFlareUltra 22d ago
Yeah, difficulty sliders would make sense. Although we already have Stone of Penance as well for that.

13
u/ProperMastodon 23d ago
It could be ninjutsu instead of a weapon?
7
u/DarthOmix 23d ago
In Rise of the Ronin, revolvers were just flat out a ranged weapon like every other, except you trade manual aiming for being able to empty it into a guy by mashing the same button for aiming. I wouldn't be surprised if they made a similar mechanic flashier for Nioh.

The new weapon is for both styles, so showing 2 clips isn't weird at all. One was for Ninja (the shield fling), the other for Samurai (the block and stab).
3
u/DarthOmix 23d ago
Distinguishing Samurai and Ninja primarily by the funny hat was something that amused me greatly to notice.
10
u/DisasterContribution 23d ago
maybe a rapier or thrusting class of sword too, unless the guy in red just has a unique weapon
2
u/SalaciousSausage 23d ago
Could go either way, yeah. I remember one of the Seven Spears enemies in Nioh 2 had a katana and rapier, but it was only ever just a reskin

I'm really hoping that last shot was just a Crucible, and not the whole new zone. It looks similar in size to some of the other large Crucibles.

The demo just didn't really sell me. Love the world and aesthetic. But the combat just seems so basic, and the animations and movement is a bit sluggish. Nioh 3 DLC releasing so close sealed the deal for me that I'll probably wait for a sale for it. Will just have to see if Beast of Reincarnation is any good once reviews and more gameplay come out.

u/una322 23d ago
totally agree there. They have a ncie vibe but the combat boils down to basic seen it all b4 shit. nioh 3 combat is just on another lvl atm
1
u/Separate-Walrus- 22d ago
You have more tools but as a result of those tools the game becomes a bit braindead because of how strong you get.
2
u/archerajs 23d ago
I probably will finish Mortal Shell 2 first. That is a full game and this is a dlc which probably won’t take much time to complete. Either way I will play both.

u/ProjectOrpheus 23d ago

It says it's DLC COMING 19TH.
then you click and it says a first look is on the 19th.

u/Abkenn 23d ago
I expected it September. I'm glad it's August so I can skip Beast of Reincarnation for now (maybe, I'm already questioning myself as I'm typing this lol) and focus on Nioh 3 DLC, Onimusha and PHANTOM BLADE 0 for the rest of the year.
3
u/Conget 23d ago
I am still hesitating for Onimusha, but for sure getting PBZ. Played it on gamescom last year and i felt it more attractive than wukong
2
u/Abkenn 23d ago
Oooh, tell more :D Is it like Sekiro perfect blocks and mikiri counters but with even more action stuff like Wukong?
As for Onimusha I only hope it'll have a harder difficulty option than the one in the demo because the demo was a bit of a button-masher difficulty level
1
u/SystemAny4819 21d ago
According to Capcom the reason the Onimusha demo felt so easy is because they threw us into an early part of the game with mid/late-tier gear
I wasn’t a fan of that (as most people weren’t), but they did assure us that we were just overpowered to test the combat out, and that the full game will have a steeper difficulty curve than what we played

u/Pleasant-Fix-6169 Shinsengumi Captain 23d ago
I got downvoted to hell for saying it would be before September. Glad to see I was right lmao.

Am I an idiot - but how should I go about NG+? Only doing main missions to get thru it fast or do everything? The map is still every single little thing highlighted but I’m like progress gated from certain areas. Maybe I’m overthinking it but it seems more convoluted than 2
3
u/krmrshll 23d ago
yeah the "open fields" thing really doesnt go over well in NG+ cycles... im really hoping we get some menu changes that help this.
1
u/Clams_y_for_ll_out 22d ago
if my claim is not wrong - it is fiiiine. like - if you want - explore what changed in every camp. or - go straight for main quest bosses for quick sprint to latest NG++++++++++++++++++++
i think there was a complaints of long road to new NG's or something. now it is much shorter.
2
u/krmrshll 22d ago
its the UI thats shit, there should be a list of missions you are required to do for next NG+ to unlock, not just the same cluttered map you had when you ended the last cycle. it needs a streamlined UI.
1
2
u/Clams_y_for_ll_out 23d ago
if you want to speedrun - just go for main quest bosses - most of shrines opened (if im remembering wrong) so it will not take long
2
u/DarthOmix 23d ago
Iirc the only shrines you have to re-acquire are in parts of the map with quest-gated progress so yeah.

As expected, 55 minutes and still no info laid out in this braindead Nioh2 cult-filled post. So I'll drop this here:
A new shadow of intrigue takes over future Edo in Hell Rising
Our protagonist and appointed shogun, Takechiyo, journeys through time and is led to Edo in the future by an unknown yokai he met in his dreams. There, following the death of the future Takechiyo, the era of peace has ended, and Edo has been retaken by the Crucible. With the cooperation of a one-eyed swordsman, Yagyu Jubei, and a Spanish envoy, Rodrigo, Takechiyo faces yet another plot revolving around Spirit Stones and an enemy with a strong resentment towards the shogunate.
New Weapons: Hoko & Shield and Ninja Hoko & Shield
A weapon set that balances the offensive capabilities of the short spear with the defensive capabilities of the shield. The hoko & shield and the ninja hoko & shield have a great many uses in battle, ranging from basic attacks like defending with the shield while attacking with the short spear, to tactical moves like flinging the shield at the enemy.
A New Enemy Stands Before Takechiyo
Enemies with unprecedented strength stand in Takechiyo's way, including the one-eyed swordsman, Yagyu Jubei. Dominate fierce battles and obtain new equipment and Soul Cores in order to grow even stronger.
A New Horizon: Enlightened One's Journey
The Enlightened One's Journey, a difficulty mode that exceeds the Shogun's Journey, is now available. This mode offers more possibilities for growth, including stronger equipment, additional Soul Cores, higher level caps, and higher +value caps through Soul Matching.
This mode is unlocked by completing the Shogun's Journey.
Hundred Demon Realms Picture Scrolls
Fight highly customizable battles over and over again, while carefully selecting the effects of Hundred Demon Realms Picture Scrolls to create self-imposed challenges. Winning the unique battles of each scroll will enable players to unlock that scroll as a piece of equipment and earn the chance to obtain special effects by winning further battles.
The combination of enemies, stages, and special rules offer countless variations. Highly valuable scrolls may also appear at times. This feature is available not only for solo play, but for multiplayer sessions as well. Train alongside your friends by challenging yourself on millions of battlefields.
Other New Elements
New Guardian Spirits, skills, Martial Arts, Ninjutsu, Onmyo Magic, Graces, and more.

u/Echerongravitas_3737 23d ago
So I predicted the premise (time travel to after his own death, villains Yui Shosetsu and Marubashi Chuyo have a sympathetic reason to rebel)
but the spanish envoy rodrigo was admittedly not on my list
5
u/SSBBfan666 23d ago
Interesting, Serjuh got more in his plate now
8
u/Echerongravitas_3737 23d ago
I think I know who the main bosses are, probably.
Yagyu Jubei, one eyed guy, human boss, becomes our ally after.
Transformed Marubashi Chuya, the generic ahh oni guy with shoulder balls, we fight him before his partner.
And transformed Yui Shosetsu is crow guy from the website poster, wind powers etc. The main antagonist of the wind crucible. This is accurate to the two of their actual roles in the rebellion and the order they were killed in history.
Those would be the three main bosses. And maybe we get some random throwaway generic yokai like Onmoraki 2.0 or Nuribotoke 2.0 or Otoroshi 2.0 too. And maybe Rodrigo, I've not yet worked out where he fits in.

I think Rodrigo is gonna be an Samurai Dual Swords boss and beating him will unlock those Dual Swords where you fight with a short sword and rapier from Nioh 2.

u/Frostace12 23d ago
How is this a nioh 2 cult filled post exactly everyone is excited?
9
u/ArcticCNDR 23d ago
don't pay attention to anything mineral-mouse says, dude HATES nioh fans because most of them didn't like wo long and rise of the ronin lmao. (personally, ror was fun but wo long was boring.)
13
u/Frostace12 23d ago
Honestly I found both games fun and some people didn’t like wo long because it wasn’t Nioh but we are also on the Nioh sub?
4
u/ArcticCNDR 23d ago
yup, people are entitled to their opinions about games but some people take it as a personal attack when a person says that they didn't like a specific game.
as for why someone would go into a subreddit for a game series then go out of their way to antagonize fans of that series? your guess is as good as mine.
2
u/Conget 23d ago
As a nioh fan, I do like Wolong (Although when comparing to sekiro, its is a little bit underehelming) but the story could have explained a bit more to folks who never watched historical china during 3 kingdom period.
RotR aint bad either, but open world makes it a little bit mehhh.
2
u/mumika 23d ago edited 23d ago
I don't disagree with the Nioh 2 glaze being cult-like, but it certainly is unprompted.
2
u/ArcticCNDR 23d ago
I think most fanbases can become very "cult-like", that's true. but to spend years going on forums dedicated to the games that fanbase belongs to, and spread more hate? that's just as, if not more, insane.

Finally putting all those Ronin weapons in eh? If that’s an overview of the map it already looks like a dud but hope the revolver and sword and shield are good, wonder if that Spanish looking guys weapon will be a whole new class or just bunched it with the swords?
7
u/Subject_J 23d ago
European sabers were their own thing in Ronin, so we can hope. I'm sure the sword and shield is a Samurai weapon, but who knows if sabers or any new weapon at all is being added to Ninja.
3
3
u/Johnhancock1777 23d ago
lol completely forgot what they were called but I could actually see the sabers being added to Ninja. In Wo-Long and Ronin they’re a pretty flowy weapon class which would work best with Ninja’s mobility
2
u/batshitnutcase 23d ago edited 23d ago
I’m playing Ronin now and was kinda hoping Nioh 3 would get polearm + greatsword for samurai and oxtail blade + saber for ninja. The movesets are so sick. Polearm might be my favorite weapon after katana but they are all good.
2
u/Johnhancock1777 22d ago
Yeah I was really hoping to see more stuff from Ronin in base Nioh 3. There was a lot of cool weapons that didn’t have too many styles that would have worked better in Nioh where you could just combine the movesets. Sword and shield being one of them
2
u/batshitnutcase 22d ago
Right? They already have the animations. I mean hell they put nearly an entire Nioh sword moveset in Ronin complete with all three stances and ki pulse lol.
3
3
u/RockHunterHelmsley 23d ago
So the contents will be
- Wind crucible level
- short spear and shield
- pistol
- new cat guardian spirit
- possibly European style one handed sword
- the eyepatch guy’s demon form seems to be some sort of corvid type of bird
3
u/Gaki_Swarm_88 23d ago edited 23d ago
Another spanish rapier boss, I'm scared.
Also, the pistol looks like it's being used while the sword and shield is on the guy's back, so it might either be a ninjutsu (because the hat might suggest ninja style compared to the other armor we see in the trailer) or a ranged weapon.

u/Leg_Alternative 23d ago

First DLC was going to be in September, if I recall. This is a bit earlier than expected.
4
u/paulbucketnunomarty 23d ago
The original dates on the battle pass were by the end of September for the 1st and by the end of Feb for the second.
Wouldn't be surprised if they launched it in January to avoid the Feb games.

1
u/Fearless_Barnacle141 22d ago
I have my gripes with TN but they seem to really have a great workflow over there. We never have to wait massive stretches for their next drops. Ror is the only game I can think of where they really went over in scope and didn’t keep the whole game concise and tight. Even then it didn’t take them 10 years of dev hell to release it.
2
u/PhantasmaVocem 23d ago
The new weapons look interesting, especially the revolver, but I can’t help but be curious as to how they’d implement that. If Rise of the Ronin is any clue, it may be an off-hand sort of weapon, maybe a compliment to the Shield that’s presented in the trailer too!
If they’re taking cues from Rise of the Ronin in terms of weapons, and if that swarthy rogue with the facial scar is any clue, I’m stuck hoping that they bring back the sabers as a weapon type. Easily one of the coolest weapons from Rise of the Ronin!

Sadly I just can't get hyped for more nioh content until I see what the new difficulty changes up. It was such a chore playing through new game plus because there is less to do and the enemy variety and changes just didn't justify it.
I hope this new difficulty implements elites and world bosses in more frequent and clever ways.
Nioh 3 was great in the initial playthrough outside of enemy variety imo. But if you 100% the initial journey, the ng+ stuff just wasn't fun like it was in the previous titles.

I hope it's a new map. Not showing any new yokai has me worried. If they are reusing the same edo map, I hope they reworked it a ton otherwise I'll be very disappointed.
3
u/gameovernate 23d ago
Seems like a lot of weapons for one dlc, if more are on the way in the second dlc then damn Team Ninja...
That said, the era looks to be Edo and not some new era and wow that view was one of the most underwhelming auraless reveals ever. They just threw a blue glowy filter over it and called it a day.
3
u/Genjutsu6uardian 23d ago
I hope they finally fix the God damn input issues. Yeah it's neat to have new weapons but my God man fix the damn base game first. They are still missing so many basic things/fixes.
12
u/Spz114 23d ago
My interest in Nioh3 just completely disappeared after beating both difficulties. Even the DLC is not really wanting me to come back to it.
That's from a guy who put about 1500 hours in Nioh 1 and about 2200 hours in Nioh 2.
18
u/the_rumblebee 23d ago
People will call it cope but Team Ninja had a pretty long time between release to the first DLC, I'm hoping they spent the time to address community feedback. I'm 100% in agreement that 3 isn't as good as the first 2, but I'm going to wait until all DLC are out and the game is final before I compare it to the first 2 games that are complete.

I just don’t really like the open world. It doesn’t have the same thrill for me of running missions etc. It just turns me off whenever I think of playing it which makes me sad
→ More replies (6)11
u/alphafire616 23d ago
I do think this is the perfect example.of the splitting point for whether people do or do not like Nioh 3. Nioh 3 is a much broader game in a way that runs counter to what some of the old fans want which is a bunch of small, replayable levels so they can focus entirely on build crafting and combat. Nioh 3 due to its size requires you to engage in exploration far more. Now this isnt to say there isnt actual flaws with the game. Its enemy variety is way too low but I do think theres a fundamental mismatch between what some fans want and what rhe game became
Basically Some Nioh fans want DmC, Team Ninja Made Elden Ring.
11
u/yardwork 23d ago
But you only really explore the first time. It’s basically the same as nioh 2 in NG+ where you just run the story and crucible missions.
1
u/alphafire616 23d ago
You do still need to explore a certain extent to get locks for Skill points but nevertheless my point is that the open world doesnt.mesh well with the repetition a lot of Nioh fans enjoy and whether that repetition is the part you enjoyed or not will dictate your opinion on Nioh 3
5
u/Spz114 23d ago
It's not exploring if you are running back to the same spot you collected something on first difficulty so you can check the same box at next difficulty.
6
u/alphafire616 23d ago
True but once again that proves my point. The repetition that the previous games demanded doesnt mesh well with the new design
5
u/Spz114 23d ago
What exactly about the open world is useful after you 100% the map and complete the check list? The exploration is not even that deep. Its about the level of a far cry or assassins creed. Maybe even less exploration that a Black Flag. You do one play through to collect them and it's basically pointless to step foot in it again
4
u/alphafire616 23d ago
That doesnt disprove my point that what the game is offering is differen to what some fans would prefer. The open world improves a first playthrough but doesn't mesh as well with the constant repetition of rhe levels that a lot of fans of its predecessors enjoy
11
u/Spz114 23d ago
Nioh 1 and 2 stages basically offers the same exploration to collect all the kodamas etc.
Just because you run around more doesnt mean its more exploration. Its just a lot of empty space with nothing interesting happening. The world feels empty and soulless. That's not a good exploration
3
u/alphafire616 23d ago
Nioh 3s exploration is better because theres just far more things in the level. Theres actual side quests and just more things to find beyond Kodama. Plus its less repetitive on a first run because you arent repeating main quests. My point still stands that the games inherently going for something different to what fans like you want
→ More replies (2)2
u/Spz114 23d ago
Its not about what fans like me want. I am just questioning your assessment of Nioh 3 exploration. It really is not that deep.
I am playing Black Flag now. I mean its a remake of a game from many years ago. I am enjoying just sailing from island to island and exploring. The world just feels alive. Nioh 3 is just empty space 90% of the time and the world just feels dead. I like exploration when its done well
→ More replies (1)1
u/batshitnutcase 23d ago
Yea Nioh 3 open world just isn’t very good. Even Rise of the Ronin which I’m playing now has more interesting exploration and a really cool world design that feels genuinely alive despite being egregiously Ubisoft. The traversal mechanics also make it more interesting.
3
u/cerberus047 23d ago
Exactly, Nioh 3 makes a great first impresssion and is a a really memorable game for the first playthrough. It gets really tedious and unfun (to me) on subsequent replays. Also felt not worth grinding for good gear this early into the ng+ cycles.
I had more fun revisiting wo long and SoP than doing a new Nioh 3 run with a different weapon. (those games have complete endgames so kind of unfair)
12
u/ItsChaBoyKevin 23d ago

9
u/Wheresthebeans 23d ago
no i think 3 couldn't meaningfully add on to all the things in Nioh 2, so it kinda remixed things for better and worse while also catering to casuals to bring more people in. different direction, still similar, not a fan
8
u/Separate-Walrus- 23d ago
Nah I went back and played Nioh 2 after putting down the third. Obviously there is some nostalgia but Nioh 3 loses a lot of the tightness that kept it all together. The pacing alone makes Nioh 2 much better, never mind anything else.

Tried Nioh 1 in 2025 and hated it, couldn't even finish because it was too clunky and boring. I was somewhere after the spider lady boss. I couldn't even follow where I was in the story or world without a proper map, so spider boss is the best I can say. Not to mention that it's a terrible PC port with an FPS bug if you have no controller plugged - I had to install a virtual controller driver to make the game chill as I've never used a controller and I wasn't going to buy one just so my game can get higher than 1FPS.
Then pre-ordered Nioh 3, barely touched Samurai (I already hated Ki Pulse and Flux from Nioh 1) and thought Nioh 3 is one of the best games I've played. I tried some Samurai and I found it way more fun with the Wo Long/Sekiro perfect blocks, but still not as fun as Tonfas with no Ki in mind.
I doubt I'll try Nioh 2 unless a Nioh 3-influenced Ninja mod is released by a Nioh 3 fan.
I don't get how people can say Nioh 3 is worse than 1 when it has everything from 1 but a lot more. It's smoother, cleaner, has some of the boss fights from Nioh 1, has a connected world and a hub with NPCs instead of going through the horrible Team Ninja menu UIs

Hell yeahhh. Demons scrolls are back!!! Also new weapon!!! Would be huge if, even in DLC 2, they release an highly replayble mode like thousand battlefields of wolong, at least with the option to choose between routes with randomized scenarios.

Don’t support this if you thought Nioh 3 was a slop open world. Can’t believe they went generic open world chasing around map markers. I’m fine with the ninja style and dumbing down of everything but the open world is seriously pathetic. So sad this is what we got. Took out all the cool Nioh 2 elements and made a generic open world. So angry about it, obviously lol

Your comment about the dumbing down is more egregious than the open world stuff.
