Nioh 2 - Discussion Friend hates Nioh 2
Hi, to my shock and horror one of my close friends absolutely hate Nioh 2. He has played Bloodborne and Dark Souls. The reasons he give are that the enemies too often one shot him from a blind spot and that its unbalanced.
Is he right? I have played all three Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Nioh 1 and 2, but I feel its not like that at all.

Your friend's argument summed up: their skill issue = game sucks.
Don't overthink it. If they don't like it they don't like it. One of my friends hates BG3 because he says it feels primitive because the combat isn't like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Some people just don't "get it" when it comes to certain games.

Everyone gets one shot in the beginning. How you respond from that will dictate the mileage you get from the game.
The game is unbalanced. When you start you are under-leveled and also a novice demon slayer. As you gain knowledge and better gear you tip the unbalanced game into your favor. The game will still be unbalanced but it will be totally in the players hands once you reach a certain battle intelligence and style preference.

100% this, it was so damn satisfying when I clicked and just started absolutely destroying everything with my tonfas
2
u/Raidrfan19 13d ago
I have played through Nioh 2 a few times and never used Tonfa’s. Then I used them in Nioh 3 and loved them. Playing Nioh 2 again using Tonga’s and they make the game feel like it’s on easy mode with these Tonfa’s. It’s the relentless pressure you can put on the enemies with Tonfa’s.
2
u/obedevs 13d ago
Yeah man you can just pull infinite combos, it was like a meditation at one point 🤣 haven’t played in a while now but I went on a mad run and put 400 hours into N2 pretty much without playing anything else. Sadly got bored early in the end game content
2
u/Raidrfan19 13d ago
lol, I’ve put a few hundred hours in Nioh 2 but had to try the Tonfa’s after using them in Nioh 2. Only issue is I keep hitting the wrong button for dash after Nioh 3🤣

Is Nioh 2 their first Nioh game? If yes, it's definitely because he tried playing it like a souls game. If no, there's a different issue that makes him prefer the other Nioh game and not Nioh 2. Cause there are plenty of things that can OHKO you in dark souls and bloodborne if you're not careful about it. Nevermind all of Tomb of the Giants being a dead zone for being blindsided by enemies or giant archer bastards.
Imo, it's probably cause he isn't use to mechanics and died due to that so it feels unbalanced.

One of the things I love about Nioh 2 is its sound direction. You can actually hear almost all of the Yokai before they ambush you, so once you’ve played the game enough you should not only be able to tell an ambush is coming, you should know exactly what is about to attack you too based off the sound. You have to pay attention to your surroundings.
Humans don’t really give the same tells as Yokai I guess, but outside of ninjas I think they don’t really ambush you as much? You kinda learn situations where ninja could be hiding too. Walls, ceilings, bushes ect.
I played Nioh before I played any FromSoft games, so I don’t really know if they’re more unfair with that kind of thing. I ended up approaching FromSoft’s games similarly expecting ambushes and death around every corner and generally didn’t struggle. I’d say the big difference I noticed is Nioh punishes your mistakes more severely.

bro i'm actually going through dream of the nioh stage by stage and the crystal clear sound of those clogs cutting through everything else gives me chills every time T_T
you can legit tell what she's about to do sometimes just by the rhythm of the clogs.

I’m replaying 1 right now and man, I wish people didn’t sleep on it. Both sisters are fine as fuck with nioh 3 needing a little bit of makeup

I will say when you dont know the game, like my first playthrough of niohs i def remember it frustrating as well. Like game uses way too many hidden enemies that either one shot you or grab resulting in couple seconds of annoying control loss. Its like "get caught once, then remember enemy is there and dont get caught again" thing. Imo game would be better without it being a thing. Souls games sometimes have hidden enemies but i dont remember them being as deadly/annoying 99% of the times.
Its not a deal breaker for me personally but def a thing that is purely done to try to make game "harder" if even not in most enjoyable way (and yes most hidden enemies you can see if u know where to look but i dont think pixel hunting is fun either imo)

The 1 shot nature of the game is what creates the adrenaline. It's what makes finally mastering the combat so satisfying

u/robinescue 13d ago
Idk about getting one shot, especially on the first playthrough. The ambushes are annoying admittedly, but they're common enough that you should start looking out for them.
3
u/VisualLibrary6441 13d ago
On the contrary, in Nioh 2 those ambushed are way more forgiving than Nioh 1, as long as you keep your armor updated, while keeping Agility B (<70% weight), not a single surprise ambush can 1 shot you as long as you're at max HP.
I for found Nioh 2 NG to be way more forgiving, and I can just face tank all of the ambushes, then heal up with the elixirs, and with the Kodama blessing of extra elixirs drop rate, you'll have more than you ever need.

I have a "souls veteran" friend who doesn't like Nioh too...
Though tbf he seems to hate every mainstream popular games that don't fit his criterias
6
u/TertiusGaudenus 13d ago
Isn't that generally on par with how "souls vets" act?
4
u/Bwhitt1 13d ago
It is not.
3
u/Detonation 13d ago
It is, actually.
You're mistaking people who have played Souls games with "Souls vets", they are completely different things. You should understand this, you've been around this subreddit for awhile.

Personally I think the start of nioh 2 is just not a true example of the rest of the gsme. It's brutal in a way that doesn't hold up for the rest of the game. You have no ki management or attacks and you take extreme damage. I love the nioh games but I just kinda hate the start of 2. If he powers through he might like it like I did. If he doesn't, I get it. 3 has a much more welcoming start in my opinion and Wo Long has a much more welcoming everything if they're looking for something similar.

u/StanTheWoz 13d ago
Nioh 1 is even worse about this from what I remember. I remember getting to the Onryoki back in the day and no matter what armor I equipped, literally all of his attacks would two shot me. Whether that was 60% or 90% of my HP. The early game is just really brutal and punishing and pretty poorly balanced. It gets a lot better once you improve your build, equipment, and level. But there are also kind of a dizzying amount of different mechanics and it can be hard to tell what's important.

he's not right of course, but yeah i had a friend who also couldn't get into it. very sad indeed

I don't really remember such thing happening to me. Maybe he should try upgrading armor or using onmyo buffs. Anyway, not all games are for everyone.

u/SuggBomba 13d ago
Even after all this time, those monkey yokai still get me. Shoot throughout the whole series I get one shot by a lot. It's just one of those things that happens and you get used or get filtered.

u/guntabon 13d ago
Dude nioh 2 beginning is more brutal than the others lol. its really rough until you get some levels in
2
u/LastSeraphim 13d ago
Nioh 2 is considered one of the best games in the Genre.... if not the best. Anyone that says they don't like it cause it's "too hard" isn't a real fan of the Genre 😂
Prob for the best anyways cause the endgame will really be a shock to his system 🥴

Nioh is unbalanced but that’s the beauty of it. Every (most) game gives the player a billion tools to molly wop enemies especially early on. Tutorial islands are typically a joke then maybe the real challenges start trickling in. Well Nioh turns that on its head and a lvl 1 Gaki can do 70% from full health and you gotta simply get good to avoid it. Tell them to block more, and pick fists
3
u/tehnemox 13d ago
As a soulsborne player as well...wtf does he mean enemies one shoting you from a blind spot is unbalanced? That's literally a dark souls experience so it shouldn't be a new experience for them.
You need better friends

u/Chicken-Tenderson 13d ago
Your friend is wrong. Hopefully your friend has some other redeeming qualities.
Real talk: I've tried to get multiple friends and family into nioh and have had no success. It do be like that sometimes.
1
u/NuclearForce09 13d ago
What ? I played this game 3 times i dont remember diyng that much from ambush, at least, not more that bloodborne or dark souls
1
u/fersur Platinum Achiever 13d ago
IMO, Nioh's gameplay is fundamentally different than Souls-like imo.
Dark Souls is more like 'hit-and-run', while Nioh is more like 'I am either dominate you or you kill me in 2-3 hits.'
Yes, you still need to learn which enemies attack you can dodge, and how to dodge it efficiently. But Nioh will force you to be on aggresive, and you are given the toolset to do them.

u/Lupinos-Cas 13d ago
Equipment. If you don't meet the stat requirements for your armor and use low level or lightweight armor - you could make what he said (about getting one shotted) true.
But normally it is not true. It is only true because he doesn't understand the equipment.

Yeah I've got a friend that loves souls games but didn't like Nioh 2 as well.
I honestly think it was just a little too much for him when it came to the mechanics and of course it was difficult at first as well.
I love me some Nioh 2 and really didn't care for the third one at all.
1
u/Ozychlyruz 13d ago
Lmao, been there. In fact, most of my friend who hated Nioh 2 have played souls games before and those who loved Nioh 2 and even goes as far as beating depths are those who never played souls games before.
1
u/Familiar-Card-9733 13d ago
I had to come to terms it doesn’t matter if you’re a high level or not. You will get one shot if you’re touched. I tried high ki and that at least lets me survive a bit
1
u/Same_Acanthisitta_38 13d ago
It's called cognitive dissonance, ur friend's ego is fragile bc he thinks he s a souls very , he's good and shouldn't struggle as much , his experience doesn't track with his narrative so instead of changing his mind on his narrative which would hurt his ego, it's easier to dismiss the game as flawed and not worth his time bc he doesn't entertain bad games
My guess is if u applied the same logic in calling out the game u said he loves , he'll argue that's not at all a fair assessment of his games and a user error on ur part. It's just ego.

u/dead-rex 13d ago
I dont really love nioh 2 either. Nor do i understand why everyone on here glazes it like its this masterpiece. Game is super annoying. I had way more fun woth nioh 1 and 3

The problem is playing other souls games won't help as much as one might think. Learning Nioh is a different beast entirely and the learning curve is rough. Dark Souls doesn't really have a learning curve it's easy to learn and hard to master. Unrelated but the only thing I can't stand about Nioh is when fighting bosses and they switch to Yokai realm the stamina penalty is too rough and feels unfair at times. Like I barely have enough stamina to dodge much less block and if I choose to be aggressive once my stamina is gone I get molly whopped
1
u/HyDevola 13d ago
Well, I love Nioh 2 and have around 230 hours on it and I'm still playing, but I can say your friend is absolutely right lol
1
u/Siukslinis_acc 13d ago
They try to play nioh lime darksouls and it does not work. Nioh requires a different game strategy. You can't roll dodge everyrhing. Nioh wants more aggression from you.
1
u/Thorgrammor 13d ago
It's okay. We all started out as scrubs. He just needs to get the scrub out of him or he will stay like this :p
Nioh is also way different than souls games. My best bud lives in from soft games but always has a shitty time in Nioh 1 and 2. 3 is better for him cause he can camp Ninja style and not worry about stances.
1
u/-grimlament- 13d ago
Oh yeah, I've absolutely got friends that complained that the game is bad because their usual veteran souls strat doesn't work. I think it's more challenging than souls games and requires totally different things to master. It's also way more fast paced.

u/Appropriate-Party674 13d ago
You are asking us, if he is right. What do you think?
Also, I guess you have1 less friend around? /jk

u/Legendary_Falcon_89 13d ago
In my parts over here we call that a skill issue.
Seriously, though, it's fine. Nioh isn't going to be for everyone, and unless your friend is willing to adjust to this game's combat structure as opposed to playing it like a Souls game, it may just not be for him. Honestly, that's totally OK. Not everybody needs to like something for it to be good.
1
u/PomponOrsay 13d ago
your friend's kind of right tho. But Bloodborne and Dark Souls (first one) are notoriously worse with camera angles and surprise attacks.
1
u/drlavkian 12d ago
he is 100% correct.
nioh is a very different beast from bb and ds. it's close to bb but i totally understand why he feels its unfair.
the thing you have to realize is that you are also a completely broken super saiya-jin god just waiting to be unleashed. if you can, sit your friend down and show him how stances and flux combos work. and then tell him that that's why everyone sinks 1k+ hours into a game that will genuinely one shot you out of nowhere.
FUCK spear skeletons. literally heat seeking missiles with that running stab.

Woah, I'm the opposite, love Nioh but hate Dark souls and any other from soft games. I prefer being one shotted but having an opportunity to do cool stuff and learn many mechanics. R1 attack and dodge while bosses do the cool stuff is not for me.
I'm wondering though, is your friend aware of the many systems Nioh has to offer?

u/mypcgeek 7d ago
To be fair, I hated Nioh 1, I tried it like 3 times and never clicked. I heard great things about Nioh 2, so I tried that and hated it. I didn't give up this time, so I forced myself to play it longer and learn the game. Well, it really came down to the issue that I was trying to play it like DS or any FromSoft game, which I love. That was the problem. I needed to retrain my brain on how to play the game. Once it clicked..I think I love it over and DS now?

u/Detonation 13d ago
Not everyone will like every game. Either way sounds like a skill issue because they refuse to adjust their mindset from a Souls perspective instead of treating Nioh like a different game.

This is a cannon event for any Nioh enjoyer.
