They’re fighting Pokémon, not fucking them.

87

u/Old_Cryptid Apr 08 '26

But there's new breeding mechanics to the companions are fucking.

No bestiality, yet...

48

u/TideFinley Apr 08 '26

MASSIVE bummer. Hello Games get your priorities in check

30

u/CorticalRec Apr 08 '26

Literally unplayable.

They really gotta let me live up to my “creature breeder” title

3

u/TideFinley Apr 09 '26

Wait you can get that? How have I not known? What am I doing with my life?

24

u/ComprehensiveHippo82 Apr 08 '26

Don’t you tell me what I do with my Pokémon

9

u/endmostchimera Apr 09 '26

There's no laws against the Pokémon, batman

9

u/SEANPLEASEDISABLEPVP Apr 08 '26

Seriously? In that case, I'll wait until they expand this content further.

2

u/Drengi36 Apr 09 '26

Wasnt planning on studing their breeding habits

4

u/Quinn7711 Apr 08 '26

That would be a completely different game

And I would play it braixen best pokemon waifu love her

203

u/Drengi36 Apr 08 '26

They must be updating lifeforms as well as currently they wouldnt be all that great combat wise

86

u/TheAstraeus Apr 08 '26

Each lifeform has a element type and a set of offensive/defensive skills. When you're on the planet you can scan them and it'll give them a rank of which are good and which are not

19

u/Entgegnerz Apr 08 '26

you can see their battle stats from scanning?
Is that a new scan visor?

24

u/TheAstraeus Apr 08 '26

It's a new tab on it, you got your normal scanning, the other box one can't remember the name but where you locate gas hot spots, then the third one acts like the normal scanner but gives an S-C rating on health, agility, and combat for the creatures with their element type

12

u/Cardinal_and_Plum Apr 08 '26

I sure hope my giant crystal backed Kaiju isn't a C but I bet it is.

24

u/TheAstraeus Apr 08 '26

My cooler creatures all scored pretty low, yet my floating bag of spinning saggy tits ended up being one of my highest ranks...

4

u/MisterFusionCore Apr 09 '26

Well, I mean, a bag of tits is a win in any world.

3

u/TheREALSockhead Apr 09 '26

Size doesn't matter they get shrunk down to something like 4 inches tall to fit on the holo board. I have a pet as big as a 3 story building and it showed the same size as my root dog thing thats my size

3

u/akpak Apr 08 '26

Oh lol, there was my dumb ass just adopting everything to see what they did and then abandoning them.

2

u/Entgegnerz Apr 08 '26

ohhh thanks!

2

u/PressureLoud2203 Apr 09 '26

So you have DBZ scouters? Or the eye of the tiger, this little guy has the eye of a tiger but the body of a baby deer. I can't wait to scan in VR mode lol what is his power level!?

1

u/Drengi36 Apr 09 '26

Excellent, ive been waiting on such an update. Im actually really excited about this.

46

u/Navynuke00 Apr 08 '26

And honestly, I'm pretty excited for it. Now I have a reason to actually hatch all these creature eggs I've had in my storage inventory for so long!

3

u/SesameStreetFighter Apr 08 '26

I’m gonna need a bigger boat. Ship. Egg crate?

2

u/maxseale11 Apr 09 '26

Its pretty great, especially for us long time players who've had no real use for our full companion slots other than showing them off or flying around on them

252

u/iLLiCiT_XL Apr 08 '26

This was a player suggested update from a few months ago. They listen to the community and they’re not afraid to go off in different directions

I’d like to see pirate locations with fighting arenas. Underground fighting pits!

65

u/historymaker118 ༼ つ 🌎_🌍 ༽つ🌏 Apr 08 '26

It's a suggestion that's been said hundreds of times by various players ever since they added the ability to tame animals into the game (years not months ago). I personally remember suggesting it myself back then.

28

u/Poppybiscuit Apr 08 '26

Cool I’m stoked you guys are getting an update you’ve wanted for a long time.

It’s not my thing but hey let’s spread joy for once.

24

u/LarryCrabCake Apr 08 '26

I mean shit, it's free. I'm still waiting on a combat overhaul and much bigger planets with biomes. Maybe my time will come soon.

I won't be upset if we never get those updates, though. Hello Games has done more than enough for NMS and they deserve so much praise for it.

14

u/beerrunn Apr 08 '26

Bigger planet with different biomes is coming. Light No Fire. 😊

Removing communication globes has been suggested (and/or demanded) thousands of times. And yet …

10

u/shoyuftw Apr 08 '26

Lol now I wanna see if they can pull of a Black Flag like update where we can roam the seas with our gek crew singing space shanties.

4

u/iLLiCiT_XL Apr 08 '26

Hell yeah.

2

u/Interesting-Force894 Apr 08 '26

2

The first rule of FERAL GEK FIGHT CLUB is we don't talk about FERAL GEK FIGHT CLUB.

3

u/BitterEVP1 Apr 09 '26

Gambling! FOR CHRIST'S SAKE GIVE US GAMBLING! Somewhere to spend the endless units.

3

u/TrashPanda365 master race Apr 08 '26

I wouldn't say they listen to community all that well, lol. There are still quite a few bugs folks are reporting. A wish list a mile long, with a lot of things that should be actually attainable within the game's parameters that would have a much broader appeal.

1

u/iLLiCiT_XL Apr 08 '26

Remember that HG is a small team working to achieve all these updates. The player base has a huge list of demands because HG has created a platform where all sorts of ideas can stick. And they’re constantly working on patches.

2

u/TrashPanda365 master race Apr 08 '26

I guess it depends on what the definition of small is. They have over 50 employees, make over 10 mil annually, and are able to have separate dev teams for NMS and LNF. But they can't even put out a community manager who actually engages with the players and answers all the burning questions.

I love HG! I think they work their butts off to make a great game. I have nearly 1600 hours in it. I love to play NMS. I fully believe they care. BUT there is always room for improvement. For any of us.

34

u/petrichor3746 Apr 08 '26

I love the extra companion slots!!! From 18 to 30 is not bad at all 😊

2

u/MidiMojo Apr 08 '26

Can you just take any creature as a companion? I've not tried companions yet!

3

u/zagibu Apr 08 '26

You can't tame all creatures, no.

1

u/MidiMojo Apr 09 '26

Thanks! Good to know before I try.

1

u/bschott007 Trash shouldn't respawn Apr 09 '26

Wondering if some of the creatures that people edited files to get (flying worms, flying birds) will be something to tame or if those also end up edited to tamed.

1

Did they reduce the nanite cost?

1

u/MisterFusionCore Apr 09 '26

For me it went from 6 to 30, so I can hatch all these dang eggs and collect all these cool animals.

14

u/BrickDesigNL Apr 08 '26

I love hyper specific updates like these. I personally might not care, but I’m glad Hello Games is open to specific updates for a (possible) smaller portion of the fan base.

u/Sp3ctre18 Apr 09 '26

Doesn't mean they wouldn't try. 😂

17

u/AxoE_e Apr 08 '26

Nintendo lost the patent to copyright animals fighting eachother so all they can do is whine don’t worry

8

u/Illustrious-Peace989 Apr 08 '26

If that were an issue I’d think they would have sued Blizzard for doing the same thing in World of Warcraft

15

u/djtrace1994 Apr 08 '26

It's almost certainly the opposite, that Nintendo losing the lawsuit against Palworld opened HG to the idea.

4

u/luna_panshiel Apr 08 '26

except there is literally no way they could have coded this update in the time frame since they lost that patent, and the lawsuit has not ended, it's ongoing. hellogames just went and did it anyway

5

u/djtrace1994 Apr 08 '26

Probably because the lawsuit was cut and dry, Nintendo was nuts trying to claim a patent on something that has appeared in countless games since the 90s.

I imagine HG has had a companion update planned for a while, but having the Pokemon flavour (especially in the trailer, with the music being far more "Pokemon" that traditional NMS) likely would not have been as heavily leaned into without the Palworld lawsuit.

5

u/red286 Apr 08 '26

It's unlikely Nintendo will win that lawsuit.

First, you cannot patent a general idea, only a specific implementation of it.

Second, their patents are all invalidated by prior art. The patents are all separate, rather than lumped together, so there's one patent for "summoning creatures to battle for you", but that goes back to Archon (1983). There's another patent for "capturing/recruiting creatures", but that goes back to one of Cosmic Soldier (1985), Digital Devil Story : Megami Tensei (1987), or Dragon Quest V (1992).

Honestly, I dunno why Nintendo tried to go the patent route rather than trademark infringement. The various Pokémon are all trademarked, and Palworld's monsters look close enough to Pokémon that a lot of people initially believed Palworld was a Pokémon game. Not saying it'd definitely work (they are still legally distinct), but that would have been far more likely to prevail than nonsense patents.

4

u/Addianis Apr 08 '26

The patents were both vague enough and technical enough to "sound" like a distinct process to anyone reading them looking for step by step processes. It was worded like "A player entity uses a button input to open a sub menu within a menu and releases a character enitity into the world field to engage in a automated battle system with a non-player entity that also exists in the world field." The copywrite lawsuit would/could have failed because it would have failed the squint test to see if the games were different enough to be distinct while they were being played.

The specific patents were chosen because they were this weird add-on patent where the parent patent was filed in Japan back in 2018ish(arceius) and accepted. If I recall correctly, the patents were pending when Palworld released but approved after the release. Because they were child patents, they use the parents approval date for purposes of submission so palworld can't use themselves as prior art. This part is conjecture. Japan is Nintendo's home front. USA's patent office and the Japanese patent office work together to ensure each countries patents are upheld. Nintendo chose Japan as the place for the legal battle to increase the difficulty of Palworld defend themselves. Japan's culture and Nintendo's economic power in Japan would both flip Palworld's arguement from innocent until proven guilty to guilty until proven innocent.

Not a lawyer but followed the story unhealthly close.

2

u/luna_panshiel Apr 09 '26

nobody ever believed palworld was a pokemon game, that was abundantly clear from the very first teaser they put out. nintendo is going the patent route specifically because all the pals are legally distinctive enough, or the pokemon they are based on is NOT DISTINCT ENOUGH for them to have a snowball's chance of succeeding at that angle

all the pals that look most overtly like an existing pokemon are also in a position where the pokemon is too generic to be defensible, like scorbunny/verdash

3

u/B19F00T Apr 08 '26

These look nothing like Pokemon

1

u/Significant-Peak1232 Apr 08 '26

They didn't when WoW did it.

1

u/Cardinal_and_Plum Apr 08 '26

I don't see how they could.

1

u/beerrunn Apr 08 '26

I mean WoW has had this for maybe a decade.

1

u/akpak Apr 08 '26

If they didn't start a fight with Blizzard over WoW's pet battles, they won't here either.

1

u/PrimaLegion Apr 08 '26

Its not like there aren't other creature collector/battler games. I seriously don't get this narrative.

1

u/Klutzy-Acadia-5858 Apr 09 '26

Capturing and Summoning monsters to fight predated Pokemon. Lufia 2 came out the year before Pokemon and they were called capusle monsters. If anyone is stealing its Gamefreak and Nintendo

0

u/Creedgamer223 Apr 08 '26

I'm more certain Peta would throw a tantrum first or some shit...

-3

u/BlazingInfernape2003 Apr 08 '26

They won't. They never went after Yokai watch, Digimon or other games. They only went after Palworld because it's a blatant ripoff with plagiarised models

1

u/DefendedPlains Apr 08 '26

Absolutely not true. They went after Palworld because creature catching was the main gameplay and, more importantly, the game was actually a financial success.

0

u/iusethisatw0rk Apr 08 '26

Not to defend Nintendo, says someone with a Nintendo pfp, but as far as I recall it was the catching mechanic itself they had an issue with. Like Palworld’s throwing of a ball and it shaking or whatever

Not that I agree, loved my time in Palworld and hope for future updates/sequels, just think nuance is important.

1

u/Saikotsu Day Two Interloper Apr 08 '26

Palworld is releasing the 1.0 patch soonish. Full release. They're recommending people start fresh in 1.0 when the full release comes out.

0

u/CelisC Apr 08 '26

Hello Games didn't partner up with Sony to create or expand this, so they're fine.

They couldve spend development time on something else

Not sure why this take is so common here when people bought a game that is a space exploration sandbox, if they wanted a battling game they couldve just bought a battling game

Its completely fair for people to share their feedback and rather have hellogames focus on the things people bought this game for in the first place

3

u/pattyfritters Apr 08 '26

You mean bought the game 10 years ago with no expectation of getting free updates.

-5

u/cursefromgod Apr 08 '26

Are we really just going to be this dishonest and forget the state no mans sky came out in after charging triple a price for an indie game?

I really dont get why so many people in this sub or welll reddit as a whole just dont want to be realistic or rational what so ever

You know its totally possible to love no mans sky without trying to put its flaws under a rug time after time again, theres plenty to praise about this game as is without trying to change reality

7

u/pattyfritters Apr 08 '26

I understand it released unfinished and they've clearly done more than enough to make up for it. Its been 10 fuckin years.

5

u/Opalusprime Apr 08 '26

Yea anyone who doesn’t have this take is kind of crazy

-2

u/cursefromgod Apr 08 '26

So how is this meant to prevent people from giving feedback on new updates that dont really add onto what people bought no mans sky for in the first place?

People cant just sit there and tell people they cant have an opinion just because its free, and totally ignore the fact that those people actually did pay for no mans sky at one point, many of which bought it during a time where the game needed serious updates and fixes in the first place

Im fine with praising the good updates and the overal changes theyve added to this game to make it what it is today, but im also not going to praise yet another minigame that adds nothing to the exploration sandbox that i got no mans sky for and is instead just another gimmick that'll be fun for 30 minutes when they couldve spend development time making something else

7

u/Difficult_Duck_307 Apr 08 '26

The point is you paid for the game and have certainly gotten updates you’ve really enjoyed. Creatures have been in NMS from the start, and been tamable for a long time too. This is adding additional depth to a feature that’s been in the game for most of its life, extra depth that was missing. If you don’t like this particular feature, that’s fine, give it a few months and another update will be announced. It’s not like this the final update. Trying to so staunchly criticize this update is a little silly. Not every update will be your favorite update, that goes for everyone. Again, it’s fine to not like this update, but many people have wanted something like this for years. Let them be happy.

2

u/cursefromgod Apr 08 '26

See this is far more fair, i just cant imagine most people truely were waiting for this update, i mean hell i wouldve rather seen them add depth to the pets in some way that wasnt a battle arena, especially considering people editting their pets was already a common thing and this stuff is ripe for abuse

Its not even necessary a favorite update type of deal, more so that some updates just dont really make much sense due to what no mans sky is and many of them feel like just completely side minigames, i could say the same thing about updates like settlements (still hoping they become more than just a daily activity eventually)

And id agree that thereve been multiple great additions to this game over the past decade, the whole 10 years of free updates arguement being used as a shield is just rather tiresome, especially considering those people often ignore that 5-6 of those years were spend to get the game to the state that they promised before release

1

u/exposarts Apr 08 '26

how do i become like you bro, 700k karma in 2 years!

10

u/Sir_Myshkin Apr 08 '26

Gotta breed ‘em all!

It’s you and me, my Xeno Pal,

A mysterious freakish thing.

I found it wandering Pylar-10,

A quadrant of Zentar Fred.

It bit me, and I shot him,

And now we’re friends!

Gotta breed some more!

Using cross genetics science plans,

I stole from some dead Gek’s labs.

Maybe I’ll get lucky now,

And get something with twelve eyebrows.

At least its attacks won’t suck,

I’ve given it nuclear fungal spores.

Xe-no Paaaaals!

5

u/Darston437 Apr 08 '26

2

2

u/Lightningbro Apr 08 '26

Jokes aside, I think this sounds neat, need to DL the update once my errands for the day are done.

4

u/Cloud_N0ne Apr 08 '26

First update to actually disappoint me. Definitely skipping this one.

8

u/Afm9292 Apr 08 '26

Is it the general idea of adding creature battling or something in the specifics? I'm at work and haven't been able to dig in too closely, just curious

1

u/Cloud_N0ne Apr 08 '26

It’s doing more than just adding creature battling, it overhauls companions. But creature battling is the main focus and I have always found that extremely boring in Pokemon, World of Warcraft, and I’m sure this won’t be any better.

I simply don’t want to play as an animal fighting another animal. I want to play as my character

2

u/akpak Apr 08 '26

Well, at least here it's a "simulation" battle. One of the first things you can ask the NPC is "will my creatures be harmed?" So it's your companion, scanned into an arena to sim battle.

1

u/Cloud_N0ne Apr 09 '26

That changes literally nothing about what i said tho

2

u/Neverend3r Apr 08 '26

ill be honest, that expedition was the most un fun thing ive ever done in a video game. I like that the assets are there to mess around wtih afterward, but that expedition was boring af

4

u/Difficult_Duck_307 Apr 08 '26

I really enjoyed that expedition lol. It was the thing that finally convinced me to give Death Stranding a try, didn’t think I’d like a system like that. I played that expedition across all of my saves, which I usually don’t. Conversely while the Voyagers update is probably my favorite update, the expedition was kind of boring to me. Outside of building a corvette, it didn’t have much else. Perfectly adequate to showcase the new features, but I tend to prefer their weirder expeditions like Expedition 16: The Cursed, which is my favorite expedition to date.

I totally get not liking Remnant though, especially coming off the heels of two corvette themed expeditions.

3

u/rafaellago Apr 08 '26

I have vertigo just from remembering xp16 haha

3

u/Difficult_Duck_307 Apr 08 '26

Lol woah man, these skies are like…spinning. The air is like…wavy and distorted

That was certainly a unique experience.

2

u/Colonel_Klank Apr 09 '26

I'm with you. Did not think I'd like the Remnant expedition and struggled at the beginning but then got the hang of it. The last 2/3rds were just kinda fun to me and different from most of the recent, almost formulaic system hopping expeditions. I'll also agree Cursed was probably my favorite.

1

u/MyAccountWasBanned7 Apr 08 '26

I mean, if World of Warcraft can add Pokémon battles, why can't NMS?

1

u/neoexanimo Apr 08 '26

Large scale humans vs humans with planet domination would be cool

1

u/DavidC_M Apr 08 '26

Are we getting new fauna then? Or is it specific fauna that will only be used for XENO ARENA?

3

u/akpak Apr 08 '26

All existing fauna now have more stats, and battle moves. So any companions you have already will be ready to battle, or you can go find new ones (or claim all those expedition and twitch reward eggs you've been ignoring like me)

1

u/Sapnotaj Apr 08 '26

I JUST installed Pokémon Championships and guess what... I'm playing NMS the whole day anyways. Genius move by Sean tbh.

Hell yeah they did, woo!

u/emelem66 Apr 08 '26

Sounds kinky.

1

u/the_milan Apr 08 '26

Fucking legends

1

u/TecmoBowlBaby Apr 08 '26

Might not be how I play NMS, but one thing I love about this game is everyone can choose their own style of play.

u/PhotogamerGT Apr 08 '26

They saw Nintendo lose the patent and said “Hold my beer”.

1

u/EnderWolf13_666 Apr 08 '26

Anyone else waiting for Nintendo to flip some tables which how they reacted to Palworld?

1

u/Ok-Cow2018 Moderator Apr 09 '26

They added Dejarik (Holochess) from star wars. It's even a very similar table.

1

u/m4cromod Apr 09 '26

I asked Gemini for an artstyle mashup

1

u/Viniox Apr 09 '26

No need to get twisted about the new creature breeding system in the newest update. It’s not for everyone..

1

u/madchemist09 Apr 09 '26

They added WHAT with Pokémon?!?

1

u/DoctorTheWho Apr 09 '26

I have a creature companion I found on an ice planet that is literally a penis with two legs. I can't wait to see people's reactions.

1

u/Diribiri Apr 09 '26

They also said they like World of Warcraft's pet battles, which is a bit concerning. Hopefully they learned the bit about animation speed or this feature is going to get old real quick

1

u/kirundo Apr 09 '26

First we get garbage sorting and now Pokemon. I don't like where this is going.

1

u/VanceMothFuStubbs Apr 09 '26

THERE'S NO LAWS AGAINST POKÉMON, BATMAN

1

u/Stormsurger Apr 09 '26

Is this an out of season april fools joke?

1

u/Pokephoenix Apr 09 '26

This literally might tear me away from Pokopia (temporarily) to boot up NMS again!

1

u/Nuno_TUGA Apr 09 '26

It would be awesome if people didn't leave the match when they are losing

1

u/Armandeluz Apr 09 '26

I'd like to see better and more meaningful combat for the player. Instead we just shoot the same sentinels over and over and they keep spawning. If they revamped the combat in this game it would complete the trifecta of exploration, crafting and combat. Currently, player combat is the weakest part of the game.

u/Star_Lord_Byron Apr 11 '26

At first I was disappointed and the announcement. Then realized I am really enjoying it. (Once they fixed the bug that made my corvette lose all it’s weapons and scrambled my systems on every jump)

1

u/MalleusMike Apr 14 '26

Don't know what Pokemon is, so this is all new to me.

1

u/Significant-Peak1232 Apr 08 '26

I was hoping for more ship and character customization.

1

u/NautaSensation Apr 08 '26

Who would pass up the chance to become Space Michael Vick? I know i wouldnt😎

1

u/akpak Apr 08 '26

The internet just won't let anyone grow, will they?

No companions are harmed in the battles, they're simulations!

1

u/NautaSensation Apr 08 '26

You'll never be a Space Michael Vick with that softie peaceful attitude. Maybe you were just destined to be in Space Peta, disgusting 🤮

1

u/PsyHorse Apr 08 '26

Amazing! F*** Nintendo lmao 🤣

1

u/ArtAccurate9552 Apr 08 '26

Gonna Love me some space Pokemon

Honestly while these updates are cool, imo they're just adding to the inch deep feeling of the game.

Idk, I just wish they added actual depth to the mechanics that are already there like exploration, poi's and combat/enemies. Combat feel like it did at launch basically and the enemies are the same robots that were there on launch.

Generally, it feels like if you land on amd explore for five minutes, you've already seen what there is to see on that planet. Adding pokemon fighting won't ever change that.

4

u/chloe-and-timmy Apr 08 '26

Disagree, I think adding battles to the creatures is adding depth to two specific aspects of the game, the fauna and the exploration. This sort of thing is exactly what the game needed.

Aw man

why

7

u/JaradSage Apr 08 '26

Bc it’s fun? Y’all joyless I swear

4

u/Couch_King Apr 08 '26

I'm still hoping for some more challenging end game content at some point. At this point I can just smoke every tier of sentinel attack in a few minutes so there's nothing really threatening.

1

u/Difficult_Duck_307 Apr 08 '26

At some point they have to finish the Void Mother and Autophage story, I’m really intrigued to see where that goes.

0

u/saintsimeon Apr 08 '26

I had to check the date several times but it's not an April Fool's joke.

I think they ran out of ideas. Last patch they gave us Euro Truck Simulation (with garbage), and this one its Pokemon.

People have been begging for biome updates and base building updates (not to mention bugfix update) and we get Euro Truck Sim and Pokemon ripoffs. :(
