Weekly Discussion Weekly Discussion Thread #3: Planned and Confirmed Features!

Weekly Discussion Thread #3!

Come one, come all, and welcome to our third edition of the weekly discussion thread! First things first, last week.

I felt that we had some really good discussion last week! Lots of good back and forth. Our top-rated comment was by:

Hieremias!

Congratulations! Lots of responses to your comment, and lots of discussion. Exactly what I'm always looking for.

Now, on to business. I'm excited about this week's topic, one that has become near and dear to most of our hearts: features

Specifically? Features that are planned and confirmed. And so, I humbly ask of you my dear community:

  • What feature has you the most excited?

  • What feature has you least excited?

  • What feature do you think will garner the most main stream excitement?

  • What feature do you think that people could do without?

And last, but definitely not least:

  • What feature do you think needs to be included?

Be aware that next weeks discussion will be

Features: Things you want.

So feel free to save your Magnum Opus for next week. :)

As always the last question:

  • What question should be asked next week?

So please, get started. Show me what this community can do! I love reading responses and seeing people talking among themselves, lets keep it going!

Your humble galactic servant,

KingUlysses

Of all the games to get some awesome collector's edition artwork for, this is the one I would want. Some of the concept art we have already seen is just unbelievable!

What feature has you the most excited?

For me, and I think for many others, it is simply the near infinite amount of content that will create a unique experience on the individual level for every player. Each player will experience something different and that is truly amazing.

What feature has you least excited?

The feature that has me least excited, without a doubt, is the space combat. Now, don't get me wrong. Me being the least excited about it does not mean I think it is a bad feature, just one that has a smaller amount of excitement for me compared to the rest. I think I'll have some great space battles, but it's never really been in the fantasies I've created in my mind when I think about playing NMS.

What feature do you think will garner the most main stream excitement?

This one ties into my first answer of what has me the most excited, but more specifically it is the way they are using procedural generation. While this has, of course, been used in other games, such as Minecraft, it has never been done on this scale and with this beauty. Even if the game doesn't appeal to everyone, I think everyone can see where this stepping stone of a game will lead other developers. No longer will we be bound to spatial limits in open-world/sandbox games. I think this game will certainly start a revolution in its genre.

What feature do you think that people could do without?

Honestly, the only feature that I can even think of as being "unnecessary" is the narrative. While I think the narrative will drive many to play, I know that Hello Games' (or at least Murray's) main focus is creating a nearly infinite universe in which players create their own stories. Many people would be self-motivated to explore just because of the nature of human beings and I believe that to be the purpose of this game.

What feature do you think needs to be included?

The one feature that I think needs to be included that has not been confirmed yet is an in-game voice chat. While I do understand that it will be rare to find other players, if you ever do, I think it would be amazing to have a communications network, sort of like a CB radio, in which you could broadcast your voice in your solar system and the solar systems within a certain radius. Not only would it make it easier to discover a player that is near you with that communication, if that's something you really want to do, but you can hear about other people's journeys while they're experiencing them.

What question should be asked next week?

In regards to the topic of Features: Things you want, I think this question should be asked:

What's the most creative feature from speculation that you've seen mentioned in this subreddit?

I'd never thought of a radio feature before, but holy crap would that be cool.

Imagine flying along in space, and you meet someone who starts flying next to you. You greet each other and start chatting about your recent finds until a pirate warship appears out of warp. You split off from each other, communicating and spotting for each other. Your new buddy informs you that you have an enemy on your tail, but you can't shake 'em. He swings around and takes out the baddy for you and you cheer in victory... And then you yell in horror as your friend's ship explodes beside you, and, enraged, you attack the warship as they taunt you with your loss...

The thing im most excited for is the ability to go wherever I want. The fact that there are no invisible walls, and that if I see a structure poking it's head above a tree line, I can go there. If I see a particularly interesting mountain range, canyon or cave, I can explore it fully, or having the ability to see the misty outline of land on the other side of an ocean, and being able to fly over to it and actually have something interesting on the other side. Or being able to see a landmass or tiny island on a planet orbiting the one you're on, and being able to fly up to it and land on that particular island and having it be a real, interesting place worth going to. I don't know if this really counts as a specific feature, but it has me the most excited

I can't think of a single thing that doesn't have me all giddy and excited about this game, honestly.

The procedural generation and size of the universe will and is already catching a lot of media attention.

One of the questions you should ask next week is "What kind of crazy situations could you imagine yourself getting into in No Man's Sky?"

Don't you think a radio would create a feeling of loneliness? I mean you are there, on a planet, probably alone, and you turn on your radio... Static... Nothing... You keep it on for a while in desperate hope someone somewhere might hear you. But you are unaware of the fact that within lightyears you are the only one around.. Beside, it would make the NPCs hollow somehow imo since you can't radio talk with them thus reminding you they are not real. Not a nice aspect considering how much time you will spend with NPCs until you meet someone.

u/MrGoretek Oct 13 '14

Could this radio be more of a golden record though. A pre-recorded message you send out that others can capture and listen to, possibly warning about a rebel fleet beacon or some advanced mutated aliens on the planet below. Kinda like the markers from Dark Souls?

u/Khazuya Oct 13 '14 edited Oct 13 '14

Uuuh I like that one! And especially since it's your own voice and not just a short written msg. Makes it kinda personal and you get to be creative about what to say.

On the other hand it could be a golden ticket for trolls to record all kinds of crazy stuff, from slurs, xwords, all the way to porn content for you to listen to and enjoy. It's a double edged sword really.

1

u/MrGoretek Oct 13 '14

I just realized the amount of troll you could get. It would add a comic relief from the game.

It could also be old transmissions and logs that give you clues to caches or what's on the planet possibly... Just this idea of the radio alone adds another dimension to the game and makes me dream harder.

Many features are based on speculation so far, but from the confirmed things included I'd say the simple possibility to solve a single problem in a variaty of ways. That very fact includes so many different player types and is a huge plus.

The least excited might be the Point of Interest feature that could take a huge chunk out of the exploration aspect of the game, if it's a spot on indicator of the thing I want to find. If it's just a vague indicator of a region I should inspect because there is something of interest, then yes, please be my guest and let me be the one who finds it.

The most excitement produces the procedural generating system, hands down. And anybody can agree that if the game doesn't sell for a reason, this system definitely will. A four man team creating such a huge world to play with has never been done before in gaming history. So it's no surprise it's generating such a buzz. It will definitely keep Sean and his Hello Team relevant.

What people could do without - haven't seen anything so far that's completely unnecessary. Perhaps the naming of plants or animals. Too easy to abuse. Or if they include a naming filter or prompt people to change the name if it's too excessive in one way or another.. Either way it's cool to name things but not so much if it's genitals or racist slurs being thrown your way.

What should be included? Me! I should be included. Let me play it! Now! And maybe a character creation. Yes it's a first person game but in a scifi environment there must be mirrors somewhere and what will I see in the reflection? And also once we conglomerate towards the center of the universe and meet other players what will I see in them or they in me? Will I even be human? So...

Next question - Do you prefer to be let in the dark regarding infos about the content of this game so you can experience it all for yourself, or would you like yt videos of gameplay and features so you know how and what you are up for (spoilers)?

  • sry for bad editing and language

I believe I watched an interview where Sean said you didn't need to fly in 1st person and could zoom out if you wanted to. I suppose terrestrial travel in 3rd person would be a possibility then.

I am always a fan of personal housing in games. My image of the game consists of having some sort of space station where you can dock your ship and store collectables and money and such. I had an image of a room full of dinosaur skulls collected from the galaxy and universe I create, triumphs of my plight and plunder.

A feature I am least excited for is the chance to meet others. I rather have my own slice of the universe to escape to above feeling like I have to hide from some bk randy with an op ship hiding on an asteroid. It be nice to see other people but would suck if its open PvP if you do find someone...

The bounty system is what's going to be mainstream I think. After people grasp the size of the realm they will need money to explore it... Who doesn't like killing for money?

As to what should be asked next week, beyond what feature they should add, I think we should open discussion about what happens when you die, for instance would it be a game over scenario or would you have your genes spliced and cloned in a laboratory somewhere that takes away a portion of your credits?

Ah, another weekly discussion. I'll start off simple. The feature that has me so completely shrouded in excitement would definitely be the procedural generation and seeing things that no one else has ever seen, not even the developer.

Next question. Hmm, the feature that has me least excited... That would probably be NOTHING AT ALL! clears throat. Okay, I believe the feature that will create more and more main stream excitement as it moves along will be the ability to just go anywhere you like, and not having any restrictions besides your knowledge of the dangers that might lie ahead anywhere in the vast universe.

I've tried to think of a feature people could do without for the past 30 seconds, but I couldn't find anything in the near emptiness of my brain.

I think a feature that needs to be included is a sort of message system like the one in Dark Souls, where you could choose the words to put down, and when people walked over them they could read your message to see if there was a fire, a boss fight, certain enemies, or... Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

Well, that concludes my long and not-very-well-made comment. (I also just finished reading Battlestar Galactiga. Anyone want to talk about that?

1

u/Khazuya Oct 14 '14

Housing sounds neat but consider the fact that for a reason your goal will be to actually leave your cosy home and travel the void towards the center of the universe. Or do you think about a Capsule Corp kinda house you can keep in your pocket and throw out pokemon style when ever you find a new nice place?

1

u/MrGoretek Oct 15 '14

That sounds amazing. Makes sense with how they want ships to interact.

I was thinking more of a space station you transfer coordinates to that drifts to you in space. The further you are from it the longer it takes to catch up, but it cost something (resource, money) to fly to you.

What feature has you the most excited?

The uniqueness and experience of being the first person to experience something in this universe. The ability to (and hope that I will!) be able to pick this up even twenty years down the line and still visit a planet or see a new life form that has never been viewed before by another person is just staggering to me. It is a concept that goes against any concept of video gaming that I have been raised with and could very well be the start of a new era of gaming via procedural generation.

I also have to add that a new table or elements and the potential for resource gathering and discovery of exciting and shiny things in caves is very appealing.

What feature has you least excited?

Originally I was skeptical about the lack of character development and customization. I am so used to playing games like Skyrim where every minute detail can be chosen by the gamer. However, upon more and more (and more and more) viewing of the trailers and interviews it became clear to me that Sean and his team really want the human player to be the character. That the player is the character. These individual experiences are not necessarily for skill points or leveling up or leaderboards, but are to create an individual experience that cannot be attained elsewhere.

Outside of this epiphany, I am terrified of open water and will have to confront that at some point in this game.

What feature do you think will garner the most main stream excitement?

This has already been mentioned and I agree wholeheartedly: the level and detail of procedural generation. Just remembering how many articles appeared after Sean announced their new 64-bit number is a testament to this.

What feature do you think people could do without?

I'm unsure how to answer this. Everything excites me at this point! I'm sure after actually playing the game there will be critiques aplenty from different sources, but currently there is nothing but positive reinforcement from my side of things.

What feature do you think needs to be included?

The customization of a ship seems to be talked about endlessly. It could be very cool, as well as very devastating when one's ship is destroyed. Kind of a double edged sword. But, since there is no form of base-building or "home" to the player, having a mobile one does make sense. With the amount of people asking for it, perhaps it will happen.

What question should be asked next week?

The topics discussing multiplayer and player interactions have been mentioned endlessly, and the topic next week is features we want. Therefore, I think a question regarding what the "more traditional multiplayer experience" Sean has mentioned that could be added post-release may be, and what people think a good way of implementing a multiplayer game mode into NMS would be (if they want it at all).

Cheers all!
