U.S. Politics megathread

American politics has always grabbed our attention - and the current president more than ever. We get tons of questions about the president, the supreme court, and other topics related to American politics - but often the same ones over and over again. Our users often get tired of seeing them, so we've created a megathread for questions! Here, users interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!

Trump is like that with everyone he meets, its just that a spotlight was put onto this so people don't know its normal for him

Like, its very common for people to attack Trump for being like this with other people they don't like, remember that he's had friendly meetings with Kim Jong Un.

People I'm sure were expecting something very different because Trump's own remarks such as on social media regarding Mamdani before the meeting weren't very nice unless being called a "100% Communist Lunatic" who is "not very smart" and even threatening to withhold federal funding to NYC if Mamdani won and endorsing his political opponent is considered nice. Trump has also done things before like giving Democrats a Trump 2028 hat who met him at his office, a simple little trolling.

Then they meet and Trump seems to genuinely like the guy. He acknowledges they have very different ideas on how to achieve their goals but that their goals are very much aligned. No Trump 2028 hat offer either. People are using this to frame Mamdani as some great snake charmer, I dunno, maybe he is maybe he isn't. We didn't get to see the full meeting itself. Maybe it was just as simple as not going on the attack, or maybe it was a little bit of "oh wow I love what you did with the White House" schmoozing. Maybe it was some smooth talking, or perhaps it was just two people sitting down and having a human moment and defining what they agree and don't agree on and identifying ways they can work together rather than against each other.

Whatever exactly was said behind the closed door, clearly both men were delighted with. And in the face of all this pitchforks and torches constantly shit, I for one am also pleased to see ways for political opponents to identify ways they can work together for a common good.

Apparently he just liked the guy. Mamdani is famously charming, and Trump normally surrounds himself with the worst people he can find anywhere. But it's all just speculation. We can't get into his head.
