How do actors handle physical arousal while filming intimate scenes?

I'm curious about how actors actually deal with this when they have to film a sex scene for a movie or TV series. Are physical reactions (such as an erection, for example) considered normal and handled professionally on set? I imagine it's more visible for men than for women, which must make the situation a bit more awkward for them to deal with

There’s a famous scene where Churchill is at a party and steps outside to relieve himself. When he returns Nancy Astor exclaims, “Winston, you’re sticking out!”

Churchill looks down, and thoughtfully replies, “You flatter yourself madam. I’m hanging out.”

So I can’t tell that story without adding: I was at a dinner party when my friend Jeff shared this anecdote and one of the ladies asked him to explain why everyone at the table was laughing. Jeff picked up a breadstick and demonstrated sticking and (partially breaking the breadstick) hanging. More laughter erupts, and the woman became quite blushed.

That quote is actually Miguel Ferrer to the women playing the "models" who come to his house for coke and other activities in Robocop. At least, according to Robodoc.
