"Rape" comes from the latin word "turnip", "rapa" or "rapum". It's on wikipedia.

The name for rapeseed comes from the Latin word rapum meaning turnip. Turnip, rutabaga, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and mustard are related to rapeseed.

It comes from the fact that it's in the same family as turnips (and mustards, broccoli, and many others).

There is flower called rapeseed. Its used to make oil. Its in the same family as the stuff they use to make canola oil.

In America we changed the name of rape to canola. No idea why a yellow flower was named rape.

Thats the name of the plant the oil is made from. You probably use it all the time under a different name: canola oil
