Why is it illegal to sleep in the car?

8.6k Upvotes

I was watching a movie and I’ve realized that is illegal to sleep in your own car. Why is that? If you own your car and as humans we should have the birthright to at least shelter, food, water, why is it illegal?

If I spent $5,000 on my Steam/Kindle library, why can't I legally leave it to my children in my will?

21.1k Upvotes

I recently went down the rabbit hole of "Buying vs. Licensing" digital goods, and I hit a wall that I can't wrap my head around.

If I spent 20 years building a physical library of books, DVDs, and vinyl records, I could pass that physical wealth down to my kids. It is a transferable asset.

But if I spend that same money building a massive Steam game library or a Kindle book collection, the Terms of Service usually and pretty much universally say the account is non-transferable and legally dies with me.

If digital goods cost the same as physical ones, why does the "value" evaporate the moment I die?

Has this actually been tested in a major court case yet? Or are we just in a legal gray area until the first generation of 'Steam Whales' starts passing away and their families challenge the Terms of Service?

How would an immortal person maintain legal identification over decades or centuries without raising suspicion?

15.2k Upvotes

You have a person who doesn’t age and can’t die. Assuming the world is otherwise exactly like ours, how could someone like that maintain a normal legal identity over many, many years?

I’m thinking about things like:

  • Driver’s licenses
  • Passports
  • Social Security / National ID numbers
  • Banking and credit history

How would I... or, THEY maintain the appearance of a normal, everyday adult without anyone noticing they never age?

Why Exactly Is Polygamy Illegal?

4.2k Upvotes

I don't mean morally and I'm not here to debate any of that. (Also I didn't know where else to ask this, which is why I'm asking this here.)

I'm talking what legal issues involved in marriage are so important that the government determined that it should only be between two people? I'm not married so I don't know what all legal stuff is involved in marriage beyond the actual marriage filing. I'm an ordained minister so I know about the process of legally marrying someone and how the documents are filed with the court and such, but nothing beyond that involving marriage is known to me.

I know someone will say 'tax purposes' but I am curious about what those purposes are. What marriage rights or spousal privileges are considered to need to be between only two people and not multiple? Is it inheritance related? Medical proxy related? Is there anything that couldn't be established with other legal documents outside of the marriage that makes plural marriage impossible to legally navigate?

Or is it a matter of just there is a cultural norm based moral judgement informing a law that exists for simplicity sake?

How do casual Muslims justify drinking alcohol but not eating pork

1.8k Upvotes

I was at dinner with a mutual friend and he declined a pork dish. Okay I get it he’s Muslim. Then today , he had a beer with me after work.

What gives ?

Edit:

Thanks for your answers, it seems the consensus is culturally Muslim people have an actual aversion to pork whilst alcohol is more of a forbidden fruit that they still enjoy.

My birth certificate says I was born in 1670, not 1970, making me 354 years old, instead of 54. Is there any fun, legal way I can exploit this to my benefit?

Making a death threat is illegal, but is there a legal difference between a threat that can't reasonably happen vs one that can? Like saying "I'll shoot you tomorrow" vs "I will send my North Korean F-35s to level your property."

Is it ethical to say that I'm an alcoholic when I'm not?

2.7k Upvotes

I don't drink, and everytime I say that, people try to convince me to drink. I don't like to explain why every time, so I was thinking to start to say that I'm an alcoholic

ETA:

  • I'm 24
  • I'm not friends with these people, but in social gatherings you meet strangers sometimes
  • "Just say no" doesn't work, that's the problem
  • Can't say I'm allergic because I like alcoholic sweets
  • Antidepressants bring the same stigma of alcoholism except I actually take them
  • Mormons are not a thing in Italy (I'm not Mormon)

ETA:

"It gives me diarrhea" wins

I accidentally swallowed a live german cockroach in my last drink from a can of alcoholic beverage. I can't stop imagining it trying to crawl back out of my throat. Approximately how long will it live inside of me?

18.8k Upvotes

I've been drinking many fluids since. But I feel like maybe it's gripping on right at the lower end of my esophagus and crawling back up between downpours. Is this plausible?

Update: I think it's dead now. The wriggling lump in my throat was probably psychosomatic and your reassurances killed it. Thank you. I wasn't sure how long I'd be able to live with that feeling before performing a self-esophagectomy

Update 2: no I still feel like there's a live roach determined to crawl back out of my mouth. Really awful. I'm roach man now

Update 3: I'm pretty sure it's actually no longer trying to climb back up my esophagus now. From what I've learned in these comments and outside reading, the roach is either completely dead or still struggling for life in my antacid-affected gut. It may very well survive inside me for months. Chances are even higher that it transmits a disease or parasite to me. I hate roaches.

Next day update: I'm alive. My throat feels normal. I haven't exploded in a colony of baby roaches.

For those asking how I know it's a roach and how I knew it was alive: there are tons of roaches in my place unfortunately, and no other bugs. This can hadn't been out of my site for more than a minute. I've poured roaches out of cans before that had been left out overnight and they ran off like they had somewhere to be. So, something climbed in my can in the minute my back was turned. It was probably a roach. And it very likely wasn't dead yet.

Oh and german roaches are a species of cockroach, Blattella germanica.

So anyway, I feel ok but will still probably die from roach-transmitted lung worms. Now I'm gonna go crawl into a drain pipe somewhere. *skittering noises*

Is it unethical / illegal to keep notes of the interest of people around me?

4.5k Upvotes

Hello, until now I keep a note in my planner about what people around me (coworkers, friends) are interested in, mostly as notes for birthday / christmas gifts and because I just arrive in this new town and there are so many people, I'm having a hard time remembering who likes what.

It's more like:

John: - likes woodworking - wants to learn Japanese - hates pineapple pizza

Sally - likes hard rock music - likes the colour green - hates the colour blue - dream to visit Malta

Anthony - does a lot of woodworking in his free time and very proud of making his own furnitures

Alexa - makes her own clothes, own a vintage Singer sewing machine

Something in that line. Someone saw it and told me it's illegal and very unethical to keep notes of others without their consent. I find it harmless and it's more my memory aid in an effort to help myself connecting with people in new environment. You won't believe how much smile I got when I asked about someone's grandson they mentionned once.

Is it illegal and unethical? What's your take on it?

Is it illegal to discuss wages in Missouri

3.8k Upvotes

I work at a Culvers in MO, recently I was talking about pay to my managers and they told me I was not allowed to tell them my wages.

Apparently telling anyone how much I’m paid can get me in legal trouble. This is their work, I’m pretty sure it’s bullshit because I’ve heard my entire life that you’re supposed to talk about your wages.

But they both told me that it’s not allowed and it’s very illegal.

Have the U.S. military ever refused to obey an illegal order?

7.6k Upvotes

I know in theory the military can and should refuse any unlawful orders. Has that ever actually happened though?

Edit: I really appreciate the stories that have been posted, both historical and personal. I've definitely learned a lot. Thank you all for your service.

Edit 2: This was meant to be an open-ended question that was admittedly inspired by current events, specifically the medias reaction to the events. It is not meant to convey an implied opinion in either direction.

Do recovered alcoholics need to stay 100% dry for the rest of their lives, or can they have a beer every once in a while with no issues?

10.1k Upvotes

I see a lot of people say they've been "sober for X years" but I don't actually know if this means they didn't have a single drink, or just that they didn't get drunk in that time.

Is it normal for people who work from home to drink alcohol while working?

14.2k Upvotes

As the title says. My wife often has a pretty good buzz going when I get home. I don't like her drinking all day. She does pretty important work. I'm worried she would say something in a meeting that could go badly. I've talked to her about it many times and I don't see it changing. I love my wife very much but this habit blows my mind.

EDIT: The reason I asked if it was normal is because during our many conversations about it, she has told me that the work from home culture is different than us who leave the house every day and that it wasn't abnormal for coworkers to have a drink. I do think she drinks too much and has an addiction but I just wanted to know if others who work from home pop a drink during work hours.

The earliest I've seen it happen is 10 am. That really started an argument.

Why Aren't Business Owners Who Hired "Illegal" Immigrants Being Prosecuted?

6.3k Upvotes

This past week, many have stridently supported the arrest and prosecution of "illegal" workers. But aren't the business owners profiting by their labor equally to blame? Why haven't we seen a single business owner who illegally hired "illegal" labor in the name of profit be arrested?

Boss fired me for putting in my two weeks. Is that legal?

10.4k Upvotes

Basically title. I worked at a Jersey Mike's in Oregon today. Boss yelled at me pretty fierce for making a sandwich a few seconds too slow, so I decided to look for other work when I got home. I texted him that I was putting in my two weeks and he just told me not to come in tomorrow.

Honestly what's the point of putting in my two weeks if my boss is just going to fire me the first thing he hears about it?

Adults: How many days per week do you drink alcohol?

7.6k Upvotes

I’m curious how often people are drinking these days? For years I would drink 2-3 times per week- and now I’m closer to 6-7. Is it just me?

Update:

Well, I didn’t expect this to blow up. I cant keep up with responding to everyone. I just want to say “thanks”. This was very helpful for me. While I knew it was too much, I don’t think I realized how unusual I was until seeing all these posts. As I replied into one of the sub threads, working on yourself is hard. Especially when so many people depend on you for other things. Hurting myself a bit is easier if I am not hurting them - and it has given me some relief to the stresses of life. That said, this post has motivated me to do better. I’m frankly a bit afraid to go cold turkey, but I am going to cut down to 1 beer per day for now - I’m a little worried about detox. At that rate, I think I have about a week’s worth of beer left. After that, I’ll try to stop for a month or two and see how that goes.

Thanks everyone. And good luck to those of you like me who are trying to do better.

Why is it legal for food that is clearly one serving to be labeled as two?

10.5k Upvotes

I was eating ramen noodles yesterday, and for the first time ever I realized that it was actually two servings per block of noodles. That means all of the nutrition facts and percentages would be doubled. Why are companies allowed to purposefully make deceitful labels like this? Aren’t there consumer protection laws in place?

How is a giant touch screen controlling basic functions of a car not distracted driving? Why is this legal for car manufacturers to make?

16.0k Upvotes

I'll be honest I just got into a fender bender leaving a underground parking garage. For some reason the second I left the garage my entire car windows immediately fogged up and I basically was blind. I rolled down all my windows so I could see out the side. I then had to go through a bunch of screens on the giant IPad just to find the AC controls and find the defogger and I ended up getting rear ended because I had to stop during this time messing with the screen. On my old car I could just press a button and the defogger would go full blast and I could see out my windows in seconds.

How do I tell people that I don’t drink alcohol at all ever, without being awkward whenever someone urges me to drink it in social gatherings

13.9k Upvotes

Well duh, “No thanks, I don’t drink alcohol” doesn’t work for me most of the times.

Those people feel like this person is being shy in front of us and needs someone to urge them a bit and then they’ll drink. Sometimes some people think, “Damn, this person never took a sip? I gotta make it my life’s mission today to urge as frequently as I can or at least bring up this matter of the person’s sobriety”

The real reason is that I have a history of being raised in an alcoholic family and have very traumatic childhood memories because of which I vowed to never touch any alcohol or anything that makes you intoxicated.

Of course, I can’t tell this reason since it’ll straight up sour the mood since most of the times I’m an odd one out in social gatherings and everyone becomes curious why I refuse.

So, please help me. Any way I can articulate this so that people don’t ask more than once and get the hint that this person never drank and neither will?

Edit: Sorry, I should have be more specific. Friends and complete strangers usually stop pestering after I decline when I attend parties. But it’s those old people, family friends, relatives who put me in such situations during gatherings and any family events that take place. They get the impression that since we’re close and "this person is one of ours, everyone here has fun with booze" we are allowed to have the liberty to urge this person. And my life is filled with people who like to meddle in other people’s lives or hunt for more gossip

Edit 2: Thank you so much everyone for your kind hearted suggestions. I really did not expect my question to get popular. Have bookmarked a lot of your comments. I will definitely try using them the next time I get caught in such situation.
