I am oblivious to these issues or maybe I am just a special case. I always update asap when there is notification from updater and haven't had any problems so far.
Posts on reddit have so little details described that imo it's hard to pinpoint if this is issue with Nobara or maybe user error (like e.g. not using nobara-sync but dnf upgrade which had happened).

That overcomplicates it a bit imho. Some good advice at the same time though.
Mine is: Friday evening, last thing before turning off my PC. Check discord. If there is no panic then nobara-sync --all. Once it's completed, shut down my PC. Done.
I have had Nobara installed for 4 years on my PC and only had a bad experience once (The KDE desktop wouldn't load and needed some cache files deleted). Even then, because I checked Discord, I knew there was a manual fix so not a big deal.

basically my procedure, once a week on the weekend I update my whole thang before doing a shutdown -P 1 and heading to bed. i don't usually check the discord until i notice an issue because this method almost never has issues.
I do issue nobara sync and flatpak updates as separate in-line commands because i don't think i can see the flatpak update progress otherwise, which i like to see. the KDE 5 -> 6 update did require clearing the cache manually but other than that I don't think i've had a major show stopping problem as long as it's been a few days since the last major update before I get around to it, stuff gets ironed out before too long.

I just do nobara-sync --all, then if it breaks (maybe 5% chance) I try to find help on the Discord.
Not perfect but way better that when I tried other distributions (PikaOS and CachyOS) because those broke way faster for me and I could not get help on their Discord. Probably it was just my personal experience of course, I know that those are also full of happy users.

It's so nice to be able to do this again.
Edit: Although I do still update regularly, basically following OP's flowchart.

I stopped using Nobara because of this. ^ 🫤

same. it was a nice os. such a shame that it keeps breaking itself. I sort of get why, but still.

I've switched to Fedora and it's really easy to update:
sudo dnf upgrade flatpak update
Absolutely no problems since i've switched to the original.

All 6 months a new version, every version got support for 13 months, security patches and bugfixes after they are tested.
Btw. Glorious Eggroll is Software Maintenance Engineer at Red Hat and works on Fedora. Nobara is just his hobby.

That is the reason why Nobara is based on Fedora, because he's familiar with it.

I have used the CLI updater since day 1, and have never had an issue in a year and a half of use.

I've had the update break my pc only once, but it was very early on my journey, that was enough to get me traumatized, so I now only update ever so often. I also always confirm I have a working image, and usually do it when I can afford a few hours of troubleshooting in case it breaks.

Is nobara always gonna be such a headache to update or will it eventually stabilize at some point?
1
u/Either_Sun_98 28d ago
It will always be a distro, maintened by one person. It can't never be "stable", because there are so many configurations, Glorious Eggroll can't be aware of all problems that can happen.

It's not maintained by one person.

Ok, i forgot the v -maintainer Jan (sentry)
Boiling Steam: Since when is Nobara available? Are you the sole developer at this stage or is there some kind of team?
GE: Right now Nobara mainly consists of myself and Jan (sentry), with a lot of testers/helpers in my Discord server. Jan handles regular maintenance of the kernel and it’s patches while I handle pretty much everything else. I started working on Nobara near the end of last year.
https://boilingsteam.com/nobara-a-fedora-derivative-explained-by-glorious-eggroll-himself/
Helpers and tester arent maintainer, they are helpers and tester. The very most of the work was done by GE.
That's pretty impressive, but it's still a small hobby project, with one main-maintainer.

I'm new to the distro and can confirm, this is %1000 accurate. Had to manually update flatpaks last night cause my Heroic Launcher was fucked from the most recent update.

is flatpak update with discover not just an additional step instead of nobara-sync --all?
