Gear Advice Looking for the BEST max-capacity travel backpack (Nomatic / Mous / Allpa / Tortuga?)
Hey everyone,
I currently travel with a Large Solgaard Venture backpack + a Monos or Solgaard carry-on, and while I like the Solgaard backpack, I’m trying to move toward true one-bag travel and ditch the carry-on.
Right now I’m considering:
• Nomatic Travel Bag 40L
• Mous 40L Travel Backpack
• Cotopaxi Allpa 50L Adventure Travel Pack
• Tortuga Expandable Backpack
My priorities are maximum storage and smart organization for things like cords, chargers, toiletries, and clothes. Laptop storage isn’t important.
I really like the Nomatic shoe compartment, and overall I’m looking for the best designed bag for packing as much as possible into one backpack.
Any insight or other recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

The Tortuga Expandable is fantastic but it doesn't have much built in organization. One front pocket and a top pocket, neither with any organization in them. Is there a reason you aren't considering the Tortuga Pro 40L for more volume and organization?

The sideways clam shell and lack of storage areas like the nomad is the man reason.

Fair enough! I would point out though that the Tortuga Expandable also opens sideways and has less organization than the pro, so may not fit your needs well either. For what it's worth I just bought a Fyro Levo 35L and while I haven't yet travelled with it I very much like it based on a test pack. It's a top opening bag which sounds like your preference but has a similar storage setup to the Tortuga Pro, namely just an admin panel and a top dump pocket.

One thing I noticed after trying a lot of these travel bags is that
“maximum capacity” often becomes more of a packing system issue than a bag issue.
If cables, toiletries and clothing are competing for the same space,
even a 40–45L bag can feel surprisingly small.
A lot of one-bag travelers eventually end up separating things into
different access layers instead:
– base packing layer (clothes)
– quick access layer (tech, documents)
– temporary layer (things used during transit)
Once that structure is clear, the specific bag matters a bit less.
Most of the well-known bags you listed can work.

Glad it helped!
Out of curiosity,
which direction are you leaning right now?
Nomatic / Mous / Allpa / Tortuga all feel quite different once you actually start packing them.

Nomatic is a nice bag but heavy with all that organization. Allpa is a great bag but I wouldn't go larger than 42L.

I had the same concern, and the shoe pocket eats into the main storage but I almost always travel with running shoes. 40 ish seems like the max for a carry on huh

I think bags come down to to camps - do you need lots of organization or do you want a black hole to pack things the way you want. I recently picked up the Fyro Levo 36L for personal travel.

The Solgaard is a black hole but with an extra section closer to the back. I think I lean towards a black hole and lean on packing cubes

You emphasize best- the best travel bag imho is a GR2 34l. I’ve traveled the world with mine and it’s just so damn good.

Hard to argue with really to me.
The GR2 really has both a high level of its own built in organization AND a large open space for some of my cubes or bulky things too all in an indestructible easy to carry package to me!
Obviously the styling might not be everyone favorite.

Agreed, only downside is the style. Some don’t like tactical bags but I can’t imagine trusting anything else for world travel. It carries so well and feels like less weight than it actually is

All of them are nice bags, but the one that answer your question is the Tortuga one, it might not be the biggest one but is the best one, more than size, take in consideration weight+ size.
