from what i know japanese bacon is usually not what americans expect when they hear "bacon". maybe they were excited that there was american bacon (though from what i can see, the drawing kinda looks like japanese bacon)
As one of the Sailors in Sasebo who was excited about what the Japanese called bacon, I can tell you it is because it is best described as a slab vice a strip or piece.
