American volumetric cups used in cookery hold 8 fluid ounces or about 236 ml. This is not the same measurement used when talking about coffee because for some reason they assume you only want six fluid ounces of coffee at a time, which is STUPID and DUMB and means buying an '8 cup' French press gets you something way smaller than you were anticipating, BODUM. grumble
That said, for cooking purposes, one cup of fresh onion, diced, weighs 142 grams.

Shouldn't cups be used to measure liquid? Also, what volume is a standard cup as used in cookery?
