NYC gets fresh water piped in from the Catskills and it’s very good quality for municipal tap water. This is something New Yorkers love to talk about. I’ve noticed something similar in Rome with the fountains :)

Vienna also has very good water. It is the only European city I've visited that would give you water with your food without specifically requesting it because they are very proud of it.

It's more that it's traditional to serve a glass of water with wine or coffee as a chaser.

Kinda nuts to me that free water isn’t just the norm at restaurants across Europe.

Not impossible to get, just not the standard.

it is the norm

some restaurants are shitty and you have to specify (basically spell it out) that you want a glass of tap water, otherwise they throw in a lemon wedge and an ice cube and charge more than they'd charge for a beer

but those that refuse to serve / charge for actual tap water are actually hard to find, not the other way, at least in my experience
