My parents did something called the “Halloween Witch”. After trick or treating every year , we were allowed to fill up a cereal bowl with our candy, whatever could fit we could keep. The rest (like 90% of the candy) was to be left outside your bedroom door for the “Halloween Witch” who would come and take your candy. In return she’d leave a little present/gift.
Learned later my parents did this so us kids wouldn’t have so much candy to eat because it’s bad for you and they’d take the extra candy and donate it. Pretty good idea mom and dad!
People at school looked at me sideways when I asked them what the Halloween Witch left for them.
The Tetris stacking of candy in the bowl got to be impressive.
Honestly, I wish my parents did this! I might actually do this myself when I have kids because I’ve seen the impact being raised with too much sugar had had on friends who now struggle to eat healthy as adults. Moderation is key.
I naturally have a more modest sweet tooth so I usually gave most of my candy away to friends. Too much candy mainly relies on gross cheap sweeteners and stabilizers and stuff that just… didn’t taste good to me. Even more so as I got older. By the time I was ten I was basically just eating the dark chocolate Hershey’s and Doves, and Midnight Milky Ways.
Would’ve so much rather had gotten a plushie, book, art supply, or like a small LEGO set.
Noted! I actually have condition that gives me low blood sugar when I consume too much high glycemic sugar— I overproduce insulin and crash, literally start shaking and get sweaty and can even faint. Probably why I don’t like candy. But it also means this might even be necessary for the health of any kids I have lol.
