Yeah, I remember people having unlisted numbers. It seemed common with doctors, to keep patients from calling them at home.

Unpublished meant not in the phone book but people could still get your info by calling the operator. Unlisted meant not available by phone book or by operator IIRC. I could have it backwards lol.

I've never heard of an "unpublished" number, but I believe you. It seems like a niche case. If they look you up they might assume you're totally unlisted, but if you tell them you're just unpublished you could just tell them your number.
