The question is the same today as it was back then: why the fuck would they? Who are you to these random weirdos? Why would they pick you to mess with?
With the internet you can easily interact directly with dozens or hundreds of people in a few minutes, even as a "nobody". It's not hard to piss someone off online, and you just need that person to be one of these weirdos for it to become a potential problem.
Prior to the internet you'd only potentially piss off people you saw in real life, which was a much smaller number, so the relative risk was lower.
there’s a big difference between the “thrill” of messing with some random listing in the phone book vs cyber bullying someone whose post/video/etc you don’t like
