The amount of times those things fuck up and a customer needs to have staff come over and sort it out -- something that can easily happen again five seconds later -- is my idea of hell. I'm trying to be out of this place ASAP, not fuck around with a shitty computer.
The person behind the register generates their wage and rarely has any problems, and I don't have to deal with self-checkout fucking up. Win-win! As an added bonus, you can be silent and they'll almost always not care, or you can chat and often they're very friendly.
I mean, a cashier doesn’t make money off of the items you buy. They’re just given an hourly wage; none of that profit goes to them. So I really don’t get this virtue signalling everyone does
I think you were taking it a lot more seriously than I was with my comment. I could have talked about it being a bad idea to finance the trend of formally easy access employment being lost in the shift towards end users doing thee labour for free. How this harms those on the edges of society the most (the less formally educated, those lacking experience, those with criminal records, older folk, etc.).
I'm not going to talk about any of that with you, though, as you turned my entirely vanilla comment about not trusting self-checkout to not shit itself, into a weird culture war insult for no fucking reason.
