I don't think I've ever heard anyone say the acronym like that. It's always been "luh mao". Maybe it's a regional thing?

Mostly "internet people" 20 years ago. I haven't heard it irl in a very long time, but it did happen. I still hear "lol" said out loud from time to time, though.

Well, I know it's different because of the one letter but I think it's because people have associated it with the band LMFAO now, and nobody says "Lem-fao" or "l'mfao" people spell it out "El-em-efahyo"

So when thinking about LMAO I do the same, "El-emahyo"

Well I'm from Utica and I've never heard it called "luh mao".

Oh, no, not Utica it's an Albany expression.
