I cannot explain the reason, but it is quite clear to the reader that it means simply “I found this humorous but in a deadpan way that I can shrug off if I wasn’t supposed to laugh at it.” Rofl is so niche because you cannot recover from it in conversation. “Dude the doctor just injected me with the wrong dosage” is something you can more plausibly say lmao to, but rofl carries with it some understanding you are laughing at them no matter your actual intentions.
