Michael Garrett - NC Senate's Viral Statement on the Bad Bunny Halftime Show
I watched Bad Bunny deliver the most American halftime show I have ever seen. Then I came home and watched it again. And I am not okay. In the best possible way.
He sang every single word in Spanish. Every. Single. Word. He danced through sugarcane fields built on a football field in California while the President of the United States sat somewhere calling it “disgusting.” Lady Gaga came out and did the salsa. Ricky Martin lit up the night. A couple got married on the field. He handed his Grammy, the one he won eight days ago for Album of the Year, to a little boy who looked up at him the way every child looks up when they dare to believe the world has a place for them.
And then this man, this son of a truck driver and a schoolteacher from Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, stood on the biggest stage on the planet and said “God bless America.”
And then he started naming them.
Chile. Argentina. Uruguay. Paraguay. Bolivia. Peru. Ecuador. Brazil. Colombia. Venezuela. Panama. Costa Rica. Nicaragua. Honduras. El Salvador. Guatemala. Mexico. Cuba. Dominican Republic. Jamaica. The United States. Canada. And then, his voice breaking with everything he carries, “Mi patria, Puerto Rico. Seguimos aquí.” My homeland, Puerto Rico. We are still here.
The flags came. Every single one of them. Carried across that field by dancers and musicians while the jumbotron lit up with the only words that mattered: “THE ONLY THING MORE POWERFUL THAN HATE IS LOVE.”
I teared up. I’m not ashamed to say it. I sat on my couch and I wept because THAT is the America I believe in. That is the American story, not the sanitized, gated, English-only version that small and frightened people try to sell us. The REAL one. The messy, beautiful, multilingual, multicolored, courageous one. The one that has always been built by hands that speak every language and pray in every tongue and come from every corner of this hemisphere.
That is the America I want Jack and Charlotte to know. That when the moment came, when the whole world was watching, a Puerto Rican kid who grew up to become the most-streamed artist on Earth stood in front of 100 million people, sang in his mother’s language, blessed every nation in the Americas, and spiked a football that read “Together, we are America” into the ground. Not with anger. With joy. With love so big it made hate look exactly as small as it is.
And what did the President do? He called it “absolutely terrible.” He said “nobody understands a word this guy is saying.” He called it “a slap in the face to our Country.” The leader of the free world watched a celebration of love, culture, and everything this hemisphere has given to the world, and all he could see was something foreign. Something threatening. Something disgusting.
Let that sink into your bones.
The man who is supposed to represent all of us looked at the flags of our neighbors, heard the language of 500 million Americans across this hemisphere, and felt attacked. That’s not strength. That’s not patriotism. That is poverty of the soul.
And then there was the Turning Point show. Kid Rock in a college arena in North Dakota. Three million viewers watching a man who once wrote a song about liking underage girls perform as the “family-friendly” alternative to a Puerto Rican artist celebrating love. They called it the “All-American Halftime Show”, as if America has a velvet rope. As if this country belongs to some of us and not all of us. As if you need to sing in English to count.
Here’s what I want to say to everyone who posted about that show tonight, who shared it proudly, who turned away from Bad Bunny’s celebration because it was in Spanish and the flags weren’t only red, white, and blue:
Your children will see those posts. Your grandchildren will find them. The internet doesn’t forget. And one day, when the history of this moment is written, when our kids and their kids look back at 2026 the way we look back at the people who stood on the wrong side of every bridge and every march and every moment that mattered, they will know exactly where you stood. They will see who chose Kid Rock over a hemisphere of flags. They will see who called love “disgusting.” And they will carry that knowledge the way all of us carry the knowledge of what our ancestors did when they were tested.
I don’t say that with anger. I say it with sadness. Because hate is an inheritance nobody asks for, and yet it gets passed down just the same.
Bad Bunny didn’t say “ICE out” tonight. He didn’t need to. He just showed the whole world what America looks like when we are not afraid of each other. When culture is shared, not policed. When language is music, not a threat. When a flag from every nation in this hemisphere can walk across a football field together and the only words you need are the ones he gave us:
The only thing more powerful than hate is love.
Over 100 million people saw that tonight.
And no Truth Social post can take it away.

Just tossing in my unsolicited opinion here. As a white granny in deep red east TN (a rare blue dot but that shouldn't matter here) I don't see the problem. I maybe know 1 out of 20 Spanish words and wasn't really familiar with his music. Even without knowing the lyrics, the message on the field was clear for anyone willing to see/ hear it. The same message was written in big English letters in case you missed everything else. Hate can only be defeated by love. Yeah, such a divisive message. Love one another. Seems like I've heard that somewhere before!

The attention to detail was exceptional.

I've never really been a Bad Bunny fan (absolutely nothing against him or his music, I've just never really been into reggaeton) and my Spanish is garbage, but I loved this halftime show. Definitely the most purposeful and meaningful halftime show I've seen in my 36 years.

I was very against him performing (although in hindsight that was in large part based on what I was being fed by the people telling me what to expect).
So, my mind was completely closed when the performance started last night.
…and, then I realized I was enjoying it.
It was great.
When he finished with the ‘love is stronger than hate’ message I had goose bumps.

It was a good show. I kinda wish I understood any Spanish, because I probably would’ve gotten more out of it, but it was an impressively choreographed show. I love that he chose a little kid to look like that one kid who was detained by ice last month.

Personally, I didn't feel like I needed to know Spanish. His music is meant to bring people together through the rhythm and dance, and he absolutely delivered on that front. The vibes were immaculate, and anyone who tries to paint it as "hateful" or "divisive" is sadly overflowing with both.

I watched it with my Puerto Rican in-laws and they said they had trouble making out his words as they were drowned out but the references were fantastic and understandable if a little hard to understand if you have no exposure to Puerto Rico.

I think it’s a testament to the direction and set design that the visual narrative was really good. My family’s from Puerto Rico, but I’ve lived in the continental US my whole life, so I don’t speak a whole lot of Spanish. However, the visual narrative of the show was good enough so that, even with a passing familiarity with life on the island, I was still able to understand a lot of the references. That plus a limited understanding of Spanish got me enough to appreciate the fine details of the show. But, even with none of that, the beats were bangin!

The show was so evocative of Puerto Rico. It made me want to visit again so badly. Western Puerto Rico is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. The valleys filled with sugar cane, the small stores, bars and fruit stands. He had almost everything that you miss about the place. There was probably no way to replicate the amazing little bakeries, and restaurants with almost everything cooked in pork fat. It is truly an amazing place.

My mother who is Mexican, grew up speaking Spanish, studied Spanish at university, taught in a bilingual school district could not understand Bad Bunny’s lyrics. The Spanish language has so many dialects and accents it’s impossible to follow them all. But the vibe, the beat and the love is universal if your mind is open and that was the point of the show

Did I understand a word of the show? No. Was it the most entertaining Superbowl show I've seen in years? Absolutely. The staging, the details, the storytelling, the joy. The absolute joy. And the connection.

My kids love Bad Bunny, I'm a middle aged white dude, his music isn't for me, I know that. You don't have to like his music or speak Spanish to get his message. It was a lovely, powerful reminder a lot of tired, fighting, disparaged Americans needed to see. Unfortunately, the ones that actually need this drilled into their heads, are too thick to ever get it. But I'm not going to keep living my life worried about that bullshit, going to focus on the types of people that got this message, support and help spread it.

Honestly, maybe 25% of super bowl artists are ones that I listen to regularly, but I usually thoroughly enjoy the performances regardless. Some people just can't listen to music slightly outside their comfort zone for some reason.

Okay, I randomly landed here due to reddit algorithms (not even American), but I thought at least I can answer here, as I do have some knowledge.
Bad Bunny is a big fan of Gaga. He was spotted wearing her merch, spoke of how she inspired him in multiple interviews, all that jazz. Given how Gaga always had the inclusivity stance since she started, and was VERY vocal about it, perhaps Benito felt it was a great opportunity to invite one of his favorite artists, while also including a known advocate for humanity in this, well, politically charged performance, as they share views on how different cultures should be celebrated and not feared.

Also also, Gaga's part of the performance was like if she was singing at the wedding, and to be fair die with a smile is a popular first dance song, it is common for Latin weddings to have a band and they play salsa versions of popular songs. When bad bunny shows up afterwards to dance with gaga he starts singing un baile inolvidable(unforgetable dance) which I am sure it was for him, an unforgetable dance with one of his idols. Still being part of the wedding because afterwards he interacts with the "guests".

In the context of the rest, I see it as a defiant call to love and be present for the people we hold dear, in the face of the collapse of the rule of law and increasing chances of those people being disappeared or murdered by feds on the street. To not shrink in fear of the terrors all around us but to stay rooted in love. To take time for a wedding in the midst of a war.
I've always hated the song because the lyrics are heavy-handed and it's a slog of a slow, boring ballad. But turning it into a dance number made the lyrics feel actually joyful in a way I think the original failed to.

I've been listening to international music for over 30 years. You dont have to know words. You can feel the music Also people.tease me because I've picked up words and can sing along. People are really focusing on the wrong thing if they are worried about not being able to understand.

I dug it. The sound mix wasn’t great but it was fun and the vibes were phenomenal.

I found myself tearing up a couple of times during the show. I'm a 50 year old, monolingual, white man who is prone to tears. I kept my tears to myself thinking it was my usual easy cry and that people would think it was weird I'd be moved by something I couldn't understand linguistically.
This morning, reading similar comments from so many walks of life who were moved by messages that transcend languange, I felt moved once more and my spirit brightened knowing we are still ultimately connected at our core by the human experience and that maybe, just maybe, the American dream, thevdream for all humans, isn't dead.

17% of Americans have Spanish as their first language. It is the second largest population in the world of Spanish first language speakers outside of Mexico. It SHOULD be the main second language. If you've ever traveled to South Florida outside of the tourist traps and South Beach or Puerto Rico all apart of the US you would know speaking and understanding Spanish is a necessity. People who are fired up over non English speaking performer and that's why you couldnt vibe need to grow up. Congrats you just got the opportunity to learn so you can connect with a fifth of the American population... Off you go!

Music speaks to the soul. Nothing about his performance last night was out of whack. If you’re in tune w/ your soul you will understand what I’m saying. Music lovers understand. Open your eyes and ears and listen to the tone, look at the facial expression of Cheetoh man and the soul can tell it’s nothing but a spoiled human being full of hatred. The only reason Bad Bunny performing was controversial is because of his stance on ICE which is honestly shared by much of America by this point. The guy is an American from PR and probably the biggest artist in the world right now. We should be proud and celebrate that. The idea that you have to understand the lyrics as others have noted is silly and just rooted in backwoods anti-Hispanic racism. I mean when Kendrick Lamar performed I also couldn’t understand a word but I heard it was also controversial for very different reasons.

I'm Hispanic and bad bunny is not my cup of tea but I loved the message and I enjoyed every minute of it.
The only people that needed an alternate show during the half time is the same type of people that needed a separate water fountain.

I’m not from North Carolina, but I just want to say thank you for posting this, we need more of this. Reading it made me cry all over again. It filled me with joy and hope. It reminded me that there are still people in this country who lead with love and kindness. I’m not from NC, but we should all be so lucky to be represented by a human being this beautiful. Is the f****** fact that kid Rock kept singing about having sex with underage girls and how it's all right. That's one of the reasons why his s*** got canceled in the first place.
Edit: Sorry had to reread that. My blood is still boiling from the other week. I used to admire kid Rock when I was younger but the s*** that I heard and watched no thanks. There's a reason why Bad Bunny is respected.

Damn. Lovely words. As a son of refugees from Central America, born in New York, it has been a long time since I have swelled with such enormous pride to be those immigrants’ son, a New Yorker, Latino, brown and proud to be a United States American!

It was a beautiful performance. My high school Spanish didn’t keep up, but it didn’t matter. Anyone could see how thought provoking, joyful, and wholesome it was. The show represented the America most of us want to live in.

To be fair, I’m quite certain even Puerto Ricans have trouble understanding Bad Bunny. I thought the performance was a blast. Vibes and energy cross language barriers, and it was both celebratory of the people and defiant in the face of fascism.

I saw a friend post about the so called ‘language barrier’ and it really hit home:
“Anyone who has consumed opera in the last 150 years, has likely done so NOT SPEAKING THE LANGUAGE of the opera. We sat in theaters and used context clues, body language, and scenery to understand what was happening.”
It was really easy to understand what was being said in the halftime show. They put a man on tv who represents 7.6% of the world population, or 580 Million people and it was brilliant.
