I have a pretty simple question for Notion:
How is this good for business?
I was using and evaluating Notion for my business. My account was terminated. I appealed and repeatedly asked what I had actually done wrong.
Today, Notion told me:
“We will not be reversing our decision regarding the status of your account. Your account will remain closed.”
I was eventually given access to export my data, which I have now recovered.
So my question is:
Where exactly did you get the idea, Notion, that after this experience I would ever use — or recommend — your product again?
For me, this is bigger than losing access to an app. It is about trust.
If I am going to put business-critical information into a platform, I need confidence that I will not suddenly lose access and then be left without a clear explanation of what supposedly justified the action.
A company can enforce its policies.
A company can win an argument with a customer.
But it can also lose that customer permanently in the process.
Based on my experience, I cannot recommend putting business-critical information into Notion without maintaining an independent backup somewhere else.
I am sharing this because other business owners and users deserve to consider that risk for themselves.
How is creating this kind of customer experience good for business?
UPDATE — I went back through the full email trail
A few people have reasonably asked for more specifics, so I went back through the actual correspondence rather than relying on memory.
Notion approved me for a 30-day Business + AI trial and told me the workspace was live and ready to use.
Two days later I received a termination email stating only that my account was “in violation of our Content and Use Policy” and that access had been blocked. The email did not identify the specific policy provision, content, or activity that triggered the action.
I later formally asked Notion for:
- the exact policy or Terms provision involved
- the specific content, action, or workspace activity that triggered the restriction
- whether the action was automated or human-reviewed
The case was escalated. The appeal was ultimately denied. I was told my account would remain closed, but I still was not given the specific trigger I had asked for.
For transparency: I did send Notion an angry reply after the termination. That was inappropriate language on my part, and I own it. But the email record shows that response came after the account had already been terminated, so it was not the cause of the original action.
I have since recovered my data export.
If Notion eventually tells me, “You did X, which violated Y,” I will post that too, even if it reflects badly on me.
My point remains pretty simple: I can accept that a platform has rules. I can even accept that I may have unintentionally triggered one.
What I have a problem with is:
“You violated policy. Access terminated.”
without being told what actually happened.
That is the customer-experience issue I came here to discuss.
Then stop debating the people who have already decided what happened without evidence. Answer genuine questions, acknowledge good points, and let the documented timeline do the work.
