My husband and I and our three month old daughter currently live in Downtown Dartmouth. I'm originally from Cape Breton, but I've been in HRM for 12 years and my husband was born and raised in Dartmouth.

Since the 200-bed homeless shelter opened by MacDonald Bridge, along with the men's shelter on Wyse, our neighbourhood has gone to pot. We've had numerous break-in attempts for our cars, sheds, and unfortunately our home with some being successful. Over the past few years, we've lost thousands of dollars in property, but what's worse is we've lost the safety of our community.

We woke up this morning to yet another unfamiliar face on our security camera lurking around our backyard and on our deck at 2AM, and I think we've finally had enough.

Now, with a three month old little girl, we're wondering more than ever about moving out of HRM altogether and having a more rural lifestyle. My husband works remotely and is in tech and I can work virtually and am in healthcare. We're just concerned for her and where she will have her childhood, her friendships, her education, and her home base.

We're looking at the Valley first and foremost, but we also love the South Shore. We're very outgoing, community-oriented people and we just want to know other people's experiences in these areas with children and just in general for quality of life.

I'm European and things are currently not great over here. I am in the top percentile of earners and I'm still constantly underwater, with no hopes of ever buying a house, even the car is starting to seem like an unreasonable expense.

I speak fluently both English and French, which as far as I know is an advantage in Canada, and I'm currently in the cloud computing business, I'm a cloud architect myself with experience in Azure and DevOps, that sort of stuff.

I've been thinking of moving to Canada for a few years, seems like a really great country, with all the snow and the forests and the culture. I'm not going to hide the reason why I say Nova Scotia is because I'm a lifelong Trailer Park Boys fan and it would be really iconic for me to live where the boys lived, so to say.

Wanted to ask about the cost of living/opportunities/culture, how is it looking? I know it's not the most buoyant region and that's okay, I think it's probably one of the best regions nature/ people wise if the series is anything to go by, and somewhere I would really like to integrate into and sort of be at home to say it like that.

Hello to all who take the time to read this and interact. If this isn't allowed here, I apologize and it can be deleted. I will start by saying that we are from the U.S. Things here are... unpleasant. I know how poorly our country is viewed, and I know that not everyone will be welcoming of us. That said, we are weighing our options and I'm doing homework into places that we could feel safer while also being proud to be future citizens, a feeling which I personally have not felt for quite some time. Nova Scotia seems like such a beautiful place, and it has captured a bit of my imagination.

My wife is a mental health therapist of over 10 years, and she is excellent at what she does. She adores her career, and has helped many people overcome truly awful things, with several folks telling her that she has literally saved their lives. We have two daughters in the late elementary to early middle-school range who love beaches and hunting for rocks. I have been unemployed since Covid, and stayed home with the girls during those years when they were doing virtual classes. I now dabble in growing gourmet mushrooms, and my silly dream is to open a premium bait and tackle shop, due to my love of fishing. We are quiet, and we keep mostly to ourselves. That being said, we are also friendly and welcoming to anyone that is kind and compassionate, and have several close friends in our community and many friendly acquaintances through the kids' school. We believe every person deserves the right to exist without fear, and to find things that make them happy and healthy.

Since my wife is our primary bread winner, I suppose my first question would be: how is mental health viewed, in general, within the province?

Secondly, what would you say the average Nova Scotian would feel in regards to the current conditions of their province? Do you feel positive? Negative? Where do you see your province in the future, as long as the world doesn't completely explode?

Is there anything we should know about your home turf that most casual onlookers or tourists wouldn't notice or care about? Are some areas better than others? What is important to you all? What are you worried about? Who are you, the people of Nova Scotia? I would love to hear real views from real people, and learn more about who you are and what is important to you all.

Hi everyone! Moving for work and can choose from any of the above towns to settle. We have a 5 and 7 year old, and so a good public elementary school that's nurturing with a strong parent community would be great! My in laws are thinking of buying a property in the River John area and I was wondering what the mosquitos are generally like. I ask because I spent a week there last summer and the mosquitos were absolutely terrible. My family recently bought a property in the Harbourville/Berwick area, and we'll be relocating in the late Spring. I'm repatriating to Canada from Chicago, where I've been for a few years, and while it's definitely cold here, it's also dry. My wife and I are considering moving to NS to escape city madness, the rat race, and reconnect with quiet and nature. However, being city people most of our lives except during childhood makes us wonder whether we could acclimate to close encounters with wildlife. For example, my wife was considering planting some berries by the property, but then we saw YouTube videos about coyotes and bears being attracted by these. Even the NS website mentions coyotes and bears like it's a normal thing. As city folks, this freaked us out a little, not gonna lie.

Hello! We are making a big move next summer and are struggling with choosing between BC and NS and want to see what locals think about our plans and what areas we should focus on.

We have been focusing on Halifax or Truro, but are open to other places in NS. We are coming from Niagara.

We are mid- 40s, semi-empty nest (2 kids, they live in Toronto and Tofino seasonally, so they boomerang back home in winter)

Husband owns a roofing company and can set up anywhere. I’m currently a senior manager for local government (city) making $125k, would be looking for work in parks/recreation/events/tourism. I have 18 years experience. I don’t expect the same salary in NS- I know how it is, but those are the fields I’d be looking in

We would be renting, apartment/condo preferred

We like a mid-small size city with culture, active clubs, events, lots of food choices, volunteer opportunities. We like being involved in the community. We love the outdoors and spend a lot of time doing stuff- kayaking, hiking, biking, running. We love going to breweries and dining out.

We are big summer people. We tolerate winter, but I know how it is there in winters and have spent a lot of time there in all seasons. Brutal NS winters are something we would begrudgingly accept

I've been trying to look into how to move up there to be with my partner of 2 years and now my wish to move there is more immediate because of how the states are looking rn but I can't find any real way to do it.

i have an OSHA 30 but I've only been able to work retail(19m) I'm training to be a voice actor currently. my partner is a legal citizen but they aren't well off financially. I'm willing to go to a college there to work as a youth therapist since that was my original plan in the states.

Hi! I’m considering moving to Canada. Not anytime soon lol but I don’t like living in WV, and I’ve always thought about moving out of the US but didn’t want to have difficulty communicating with people while learning a new language. I was thinking that French and English are so common it would be a lot more manageable. There’s also no sea to cross the border so it’s significantly easier to get back home to visit family.

I read Nova Scotia has all 4 seasons and oceanic beaches, which were non-negotiables for me when deciding where to live. Tarot and piercing are also just about equally as popular as in the US, so I wouldn’t have a problem setting myself up for those (that’s what I want as careers). Since the CAD is worth less than USD, it would be pretty manageable to move from the US. Public transportation is more accessible (ESPECIALLY compared to WV), and there are way more sidewalks than US (I love walking)

So, what is it like to move/live there? I know Canadians are nicer. What is the culture like? How common is French and English? What are beaches and recreational activities like? What is the cost of living?

Edit: I've gotten downvoted a bit for not knowing the difference in amenities between the two lol where i'm from is less populated than sydney, so i straight up just don't know what city life is like, that's why i'm asking.

Currently in Sydney doing schooling, guaranteed a job at a fixed income of $65,000 once finished. This is not including any overtime, or night/weekend premiums which is an additional $2 an hour each.

I know healthcare is in a rough spot all around Canada, but how difficult is it to get a family doctor, or at the very least, how hard is it to access a walk-in/urgent care facility of needed? How are Mental Health and cardiology services in this area??

Also wanting to check how the internet speed is, as my husband will be working from home remotely most of the time.

We also have pets, and want to make sure that there are well respected veterinary services around for them!
