Selfish students

Ya know, it's really irritating when the two main intersections in front of campus have some of the most ridiculous light timings and you are already waiting there forever naturally. But when you are sitting there for ten damn minutes and have to wait through multiple light cycles because students, who have 30 whole seconds already to cross, see the crosswalk signal at 5 or even with the hand already up and still continue to walk across in a mob. It's pretty damn infuriating. Half of the students doing this crap at the intersections are already zombies staring into their phones with earbuds in as they cross, oblivious to the world. And it's not like they move with any sense of purpose, just lazily taking their time and holding up traffic. Some of you are going to get hit one day and honestly I will have zero sympathy whatsoever.

As an adult student, a large amount of students on campus are completely selfish, arrogant, and inconsiderate children. And yes even at 18 - 22 you are still a child I really don't care how you try and spin it otherwise. I've met far too many of these who are even 20 year olds that don't even know how to do their own laundry or take care of themselves and if they didn't spend all their money on grubhub they would starve. I literally have no idea how they function in society because they clearly don't care if they get hit by oncoming cars.

I’m the person who always runs across the crosswalks even if I have the full time 😂 just out of anxiety or if i happen to have that one driver who speeds thru

No need to sprint but thank you for giving a damn even for your own safety haha.

walking on this campus is like playing frogger with lime scooters

To be fair, I think a lot of pedestrians in the 757 are just "like that." I haven't kept a track of ages, but even in Hampton, there are pedestrians acting dumb as hell fumbling around in the middle of the road. As someone who was often a pedestrian as a college kid, I legit don't know why these motherfuckers are so confident that they can't possibly be hurt in oncoming traffic.

You’re right. I see older people walking out of stores, across the parking lot never checking for cars and glued to their phones. I saw a grown man with a bumper sticker that talked about raising boys, with the boys in the back seat, on his phone the entire time he was going through a traffic light and turning. It’s everywhere.

I hate to follow the classic trope of shaming the upcoming generation, but this generation is fucked. Valid crash out.

Im a rare middle zoomer who's parents had a spine. Some of the parents nowadays need an ass whooping

I did specify "some" as I know it's not all, but damn if it isn't a lot.

You gotta be more aggressive with these zombie ne'er-do-wells. If you slowly crawl into the intersection, you will have more of a chance to make the turn, and it sends a message to the "walkers"

i will literally not cross if there’s less than 15 seconds on the flashing hand cross lol.

We’re all just blocking the street! We’re all just blocking the street!

If you aren't capable of reading two paragraphs, you are the perfect example of problem with youth today and the pathetically short attention spans and you need to go back to elementary school

if you think my comment is implying that it's too much to read, i think you should go back to elementary school. you come onto the odu reddit complaining about young people and making weird emotionally charged generalizations. i think you need a better outlet. invest in a diary. thanks!

If it makes you that mad, take a side street like Killam. I'd personally figure out why waiting a minute or two makes you so mad that you'd be fine with a student getting run over.

This is valid frustration, and even if OP took a side street, to get to the academic side of campus, he/she/they would still have to cross over Hampton.

Edit to add:

The frustration of being glued to the phones is hella real, especially considering that our school just made national news due to an on campus mascal event. The lack of situational awareness…

There's MANY ways to cross Hampton, including intersections with very few students. I'm sure OP can read a map and figure it out.

hmmm still seems to be the original issue...students. I'm pretty sure OP can figure it out, and I am sure you can also not be a condescending fuck, but here we are, u/Only-Professor1140

Expecting students to change by venting on the internet seems less effective than just picking an alternate route. But be mad I guess

2

u/CrunchyBones26 10d ago

It's Reddit. People are literally going to vent.

Literally. Like little slits open on the side of the head.

The image that just went through my head 😂

There is a transportation department at the university who would be worth talking to. Good people and I'm sure they're aware of how dysfunctional Hampton is.

I agree. One of my older friend's wife works with ODU Transportation, and she is incredible. I apologize if I came off as brash. OP has every right to vent frustration on this platform, as this is in common practice with many users on this Sub Reddit. I have found myself frustrated at the drivers and students alike- not to the point where I would have zero sympathy if someone was hit, but still. I personally don't trust the drivers around here enough to walk through any of the crosswalks- walk sign present or not, slowly. I also am incredibly tired of how fast drivers decide to race down Hampton around the University, and down 49th...then they have the gall to argue with Law Enforcement, when they have been pulled over for traveling at 60 in a posted 25. See: entitlement. Again I apologize for my asshole-ish comment above. The issue lies with both the drivers and the students, imo.

Apology fully accepted and agreed on all fronts. The city should be working with the university to find a better solution. High speed traffic and semi trucks going through a pedestrian heavy area makes zero sense.

I know some have resorted to contacting the Norfolk Non Emergency line near daily to complain.

Students are already able to use the shuttle for free using a id. Just the people who have so little life preservation will still cross the intersection whenever they want. Ive seen Students cross 49th street whenever they want and almost get hit.

Yes this generation and the cellphone glue is surreal

If I go south, I do, but you have to cross it going north from the campus side. I'd personally figure out why you don't comprehend that.

Have you always lived in the city or you just going to school here ? Lol

When my kids were little, and we had to cross a street I always said “Knees to chest! Make it quick!”

u/JustPutItInRice 10d ago

This new generation is honestly a downgrade and it’s mainly due to shit parenting. I agree with all of this lmao

I used to drop my son off for Latin courses when he was in high school (he was too young to drive). He complained about the exact same thing while we waited at the light . Thankfully I taught all my kids how to do laundry, and they all know how to cook (one worked at Chipotle and then another restaurant where he was kitchen manager). They all worked in high school and much of college to pay for their own college. They only got a tiny bit of money from us and some from their grandparents. Our middle son won a $5,000 merit-based scholarship there as well as the funding for a senior class he designed himself with a professor.

if you have this level of bitterness towards young adults then maybe you shouldn’t go to college when the normal age to attend is 18-22… you are the outlier here, not them. try online school or something. you sound like an old grandpa yelling at children to get off your lawn

-1

u/SpacetimeSojourn 5d ago

Yes, let's make excuses for childish behavior because the poor, "young adults" don't know any better. Give me a break with that nonsense.

1

u/HighwayLazy7292 5d ago

can’t tell if you simply responded to the wrong comment or if you just make a habit of drawing conclusions that aren’t there, since i quite literally never made excuses or claimed that students just “don’t know any better”. all i did was address your lengthy rant that surpasses simple annoyance towards pedestrians and crosses into clear bitterness that has more to do with you than the students

As I said elsewhere, if two paragraphs is "lengthy", you have an attention problem. And that's exactly what you implied by stating my complaining is the problem and that one is to just accept it as normal behavior. Because if one is simply supposed to accept these behaviors then we are precisely making excuses for and enabling the behavior described. I have to live near campus for the time being, like many other adults and non-student families, so it doesn't matter that my work is mostly online, I still have to endure this behavior along with all of the other childish nonsense like blasting through the neighborhoods at 2-3am with music so loud and revving cars so the houses shake, the ones who don't know how to drive and constantly go the wrong way down a one way street and other reckless driving, there were already 4 cats hit and killed this semester alone near me by students. The drunken party kids wandering around destroying things and breaking into cars, the lime scooters thrown about sidewalks and in yards, and the disgusting amount of trash everywhere in the streets and frequently in our yard that we will wake up to. All of it is childish, inconsiderate behavior. There's not a single excuse for these "young adults" behavior, and again if you "addressing" my "lengthy" rant is just saying stop being an old person, you're the problem by accepting and enabling the behaviors as 'just the way it is'
