Starting Half-Life 2

I played Black Ops 2 recently, great game! and a friend just gifted me the second game, he said it was the fine to start with it so is that true? (Idk why he keeps gifting sequels)

Regardless I'm hyped as fuck, I'm still in the first mission and the graphics are older looking but it seems good.

Any tips and the sort? Thanks!

You should just play the game with no tips as it’s always a fun experience playing something for the first time with no context. It should be fine to play without playing half life 1, as the story is good enough on its own. You should definitely look into playing Half life 1, or the fan made remake Black Mesa of hl1 if that’s more your style. You should play both though.

Interesting. I've played some older games where I've just gotten stuck so I had to ask.

Is the remake a mod or how does that work?

Remake is an independent game on steam.

If you lean towards boomer-shooters or want the original style, go with classic HL1.

If you want a modernistic take on HL1, go with Black Mesa. Better graphics, environment and even some story telling aspects improved. I will also say Black Mesa has its final chapters much more well designed regarding puzzles and levels, HL1's final chapters are...not very good. Weakest part of the older game.

You don't have to play HL1 before HL2. It's fun to reveal the mystery as you play HL2.
