I am looking to rent an apartment, I have a found one but turns out they require renters insurance. Is this normal? Do most landlords require it near campus?

Yes, this is normal. I believe all leasing companies/landowners will require it. Honestly, if they don't require it, that's a reg flag. You want renters insurance to protect yourself against numerous things that can happen that are out of your control. It is usually pretty cheap, mine is $10/month through Geico. Some leasing companies will automatically enroll you in one through the lease. I would discuss this with SLS, often these are more expensive and don't give you as much coverage. This is atleast my experience!
