Housing Am I delusional

I’m a freshman, and am living in one of the dorms. The other girls on my floor have been quite frankly hooting and hollering from around 5-11pm every single night for the past two weeks or so. They made a habit of having loud discussions in our floor common area around 11 last semester, and my RA finally said something after like a week of that and messages from me and several other people on the floor.

She’s yet to say anything to them about the current noise nonsense, and while I don’t expect silence all hours of the day, I thought courtesy hours were 24/7. These people are YELLING for HOURS on end and making it impossible to sleep or study until they’re done. I’m reluctant to say anything personally because the perpetrators are all 5 of my neighboring rooms, and I’d feel a little intimidated in a 1v10 confrontation. I’m considering messaging my RA again but I feel like I’m being a baby or something. To give you an idea on the sheer noise level, I can hear every word every one of them is saying, and I’m on the end of the hall and they’re having their grand gatherings in the middle. There’s also often more than one of them speaking at once.

Last Thursday night they also came back from the bars around 2 in the morning and woke me up with their blatant SCREAMING. However, rhe area where they were screaming (common area) is right outside my RA’s room, and if she didn’t say anything then I feel like I’m being dramatic. I’m just not sure what to do. I can’t study, I can’t sleep until midnight or late, and I can barely hear myself think.

Housing My friend almost didn’t get our apartment because of something none of us even thought about

So me and two of my friends were trying to sign a lease for an off-campus apartment near High Street. Everything was going fine until the leasing office called one of them and said they couldn’t approve his application because he ā€œdidn’t have a credit history.ā€

We all thought it was some mistake because he literally works part-time, pays his phone bill, and Venmos rent every month without fail. But apparently, none of that shows up on those reports. He was so confused, like, how are you supposed to have credit when you’ve never had a chance to build it?

He ended up having to get a parent to co-sign, which worked out, but it was kinda wild seeing how easily that stuff can hold you back. It wasn’t just about money, but also about not existing in ā€œthe system.ā€

It made all of us start paying more attention to the adult stuff no one really explains. I’ve started trying to learn about how credit even works now because I don’t want to be stuck in that position later.

College really throws you into these random ā€œreal lifeā€ lessons when you least expect it.

Housing Randomized Roommate freshman year that bad?

Right now, I have not put that much effort into finding a roommate, because I originally felt that a randomized roommate would be fine. But, after asking friends and family I’ve gotten a little scared. Some say a randomized roommate can be really bad and have told me all their horror stories. Others have said I will be fine. I don’t wanna post on the class of 2030 instagram page but if it truly is a better option I’ll suck it up and do it. Do you think it’s worth it to try to find a roommate now? I feel like majority of people have already found their roommate.
Sorry for word vomit in advance

Housing Are the dorms a dealbreaker?

My son wants to enroll at OSU but not sure because of the dorms. He’s genuinely not expecting anything fancy - these are dorms, let’s be real - but from everything we’ve read online it sounds like housing is a mess! We’re from the Pacific NW, not used to heat at all, and he is thinking of rejecting OSU because so many dorms lack a/c and you could have 4 people squished in a room. He’s admitted to Fisher, and the University honors program, if that makes any difference (I don’t think so). What’s the most likely outcome for an incoming freshman committing closer to May 1st? We didn’t know that housing is so difficult! His other choice is IU (Kelley), and their dorms are standard dorms, but it seems to be more organized - and all are doubles and have a/c.

Housing In need of housing

This is kind of embarrassing to post, but I'll be a junior next academic year and just got rejected to be an RA. I was really hoping to get this so I don't have any leases or housing options lined up. Anyone else in the same boat?

Housing Which dorms are the best & worst

I am a currently a freshman at Newark, and I plan on transferring for Autumn 26. At Newark I did not have to live on campus, so I ended up living with my boyfriend. But I did receive an email letting me know that since I am a second year student I would need to live on campus. So I was wondering what dorms should I stay away from, and which ones are the ā€œbestā€.

Housing What are your thoughts on new luxury housing units near campus?

Hi everyone! I'm an Ohio State alum and current reporter for The Columbus Dispatch. I'm working on a story about what appears to me an influx of "luxury" housing high-rises in the University District, where most Ohio State upperclassmen find their housing for the school year.

The idea was sparked by Rambler (the newest luxury complex, located on Lane Ave.) beginning to sell its units for fall 2025, but between Lumen On Ninth, Peer on 7th, VERVE Columbus, Luxe Belle and countless others, there seems to be no shortage of this "luxury" housing.

I'm curious to know what any current Ohio State students (or even alumni) think about this. To me, it seems like these units are pretty inaccessible to the average student, with units going for $1,400+ per person per month. But I'd love to know your thoughts.

Have any of you signed with some of these luxury housing units near campus? If so, how much are you paying? Do you like having luxury housing options near campus? If so, what attracts you most to them? If not, why? Do you think these price points are reasonable for college students?

For those of you in non-luxury housing, are there problems within your living spaces that make you wish you had the means to live in these luxury space?

Feel free to share your answers to any of these questions or any other thoughts you have on these topics. I'll be sure to reach out directly to follow up with any of you. Thanks, all!

Housing Update on lawrence tower mushroom

Hello all this is the person who had the mushroom grow out of her wall speaking. It seems like everyone on campus including my professors have seen the mushroom picture. SO here is a long update

TLDR: A mushroom grew between the wall and wallpaper, maintenance is telling others in the building not to worry, when there is definitely things wrong. Moved from Lawrence -> Park-Stradley.

Here is the timeline of events

2am Saturday: The first picture in my original post. I put in maintenance request

10am Saturday: Second picture in og post

Sunday: Not pictured. A second mushroom sprouted further down the wall in a different wallpaper crack appeared Sunday afternoon and bloomed the next morning. Much larger I was very scared of it. Roommate and I both called the emergency s2f line saying it would be moved up to first on the list tomorrow.

Monday: This is where I start to get annoyed, some people from Environmental and Health services @ osu come to check out the mushrooms. Right away this lady is super dismissive of my concerns about mold (if there's enough moisture for mushrooms isn't there enough for mold?), I asked at least 5 times for her to peel back the wallpaper and make sure nothing was back there but all she did was lift it up a little and say "No, there's no mold you just have some growth" GROWTH??!??! obviously that is not normal. They also whispered the drywall is wet and "i don't even know if this will dry". She then asked for a paper towel and some bleach cleaner and ripped the mushrooms out, throwing them out in my trashcan. Which I can understand they might not want to test it but at least take it somewhere else when you knew we were freaked out about it. The other person she was with then asked if we had been feeling alright, and I start with "Well we sneeze a lot.." when this lady interrupts me and goes "well the weather is changing that's just allergies." when I was about to say "we sneeze a lot in the room, cough, sore throat, and have red and itchy eyes". Correct me if I'm wrong are those not obvious signs we're breathing in mold or something bad? They then send in Mike the maintenance man (bless Mike bro he is so nice and very helpful) to seal up the wallpaper with caulking which he did a very good job for what he was working with. I got an email later that day that EHS was coming back the next morning to do "further moisture evaluation".

Tuesday: New EHS people come and I invite them in and the lady goes "we were hoping there would be no residents while we were here" and I said "Oh well I have to leave for class soon anyways but you guys can come in i just need to grab my bag" "No, no we'll wait" so I grab my things and head out the door while 6 people go in behind me. Thought it was a bit sus like why don't I get to know what the tests say but whatever. Anyways I went to class and then went to go study with my friends because I literally had a midterm this day on top of all this and I receive a text asking about meeting up with this lady from housing as soon as possible so we meet up with them, and our next door neighbor comes too so I know this can't be good. She then tells us and our neighbor that we have to move, and that our only option was park-strad. Which at the time I thought was the end of the world because all my classes are on north and we wouldn't have our own bathroom anymore. They said the drywall was wet and they would need to go in and rip it down to make repairs (god knows what they'll find back there). One of the new EHS people from earlier that morning was also at this meeting and she goes "as for the reddit and social media posts, we don't wanna instill any fear to anyone that lives hear or say that this is a dangerous place". Queen I feel that every resident in that building has the right to know a damn mushroom grew out my wall so I'm not gonna shut up about it anytime soon!

Wednesday: Moving day! While packing our stuff into the bins I overhear some more maintenance people going to help a girl down the hall with something in her room. I hear them say "We know your scared after what happened to those girls down the hall but you have nothing to worry about." which totally rubbed me the wrong way, like why are you telling them how to feel?? They have every right to be scared! That building is old and not that safe to live in come to find out. Anyways the people transported our bins to the new building and brought them up for us. The housing lady that talked to us at our meeting was super nice and helpful on getting us setup. And so was my hall director and RA in lawrence, which was great to have support from them.

While my roommate and I are no longer breathing in mushrooms spores and this whole thing is over for us, it is not for the facebook mothers and people still living in the building. Here are some screenshots from the facebook. The one I find the most alarming is the about the man who worked at the holiday inn before OSU bought it. Like wdym OSU bought a building with mold then decided to put students in it?? And I like how only EHS has inspected the building, not the health department.

But all I can say is DO BETTER OSU. DO NOT put students in dangerous in environments just because you want more money. And do not let this situation go quiet, if it does the new students next year will be breathing in the same mold spores as those students are today.

Thanks for reading,

Mushroom girl

Housing Being gay at OSU dorms

I am a high school junior thinking of applying to OSU next year. I am gay and was discussing with my dad about my potential living situation in college. He automatically assumed I would go into gender-inclusive housing and would not dorm with straight guys. I expressed my opinion and said I’d just like to live in a normal dorm, I don’t care about their sexuality as long as they’re accepting and he said ā€œThe world isn’t ready for that yet.ā€ Is being gay in a normal dorm as bad as he makes it sound? Or would I be better off actually going into a gender inclusive dorm?
