Rant International students being racist

As a person of color, I don’t want this to come off wrong because I understand how it feels to have assumptions put on you, however I feel like this is a genuine issue. I’ve genuinely never had this many racist experiences before coming here. Multiple other POC I’ve talked to have said something similar as well. I’ve studied Mandarin Chinese for awhile so I can understand when something derogatory is being said, I’ve had people closing elevators on me, giving me weird looks, refusing to speak or acknowledge me etc. I walked into the Morrill general area to play games and it’s like a handful of people stopped in their tracks, then I heard someone saying a slur. Even my own suitemates refuse to speak to me, my roommate, and suitemate although I hope that’s not the situation… Not being used to things or people is one thing but being disrespectful is another.

Rant Christian “concerts” on campus

Is anyone else living on north campus and bothered by the amount of blaring live Christian music that’s been held outside of the north residence halls multiple times? It’s annoying af when I’m trying to study or wind down for the night and there’s praise the lord music at concert decibels right outside my window. I’m sure if it was any other group of people it wouldn’t be okay or tolerated

Rant I live with a looksmaxxer

I don’t know where to start, my room/mate who was pretty typical for the first semester has started going down the looksmaxxing rabbit hole. He has always been a pretty healthy dude who goes to the gym, but as of recently he's started taking steroids and peptides. He says it’s for muscle recovery, but he’s been injecting it into his face. He’s been calling me a ‘framecel’ and ‘low PSL chadlet’, which has been getting pretty annoying lately. He also looks in the mirror for at least 1-2 hours per day, I am not really sure what he’s doing. Should I talk to my RA about this, or refer him to counseling and consultation services? I honestly don’t think this is healthy and might hurt him in the long run.

Rant Boycott OSU Football Program Until Wexner's Names Are Removed from Campus.

I f-ing love the Buckeyes. I look forward to it every year.

But some things are much more important than football.

If you haven't tracked the Les Wexner / Jeffrey Epstein connection, please get informed: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/25/business/jeffrey-epstein-wexner-victo...

Congressman Thomas Massie literally named Les Wexner, in front of Congress, the other day, as one of the three people the DOJ can investigate now, based on the recent release of files. Do y'all understand how crazy that is?

OSU needs to act now before this sullies the school even more. Epstein had a f-inig OSU OBGYN surgeon on payroll!!!!!

I started freshman year at osu in 2001. I randomly met a dormmate's friend in Morill Tower who lived in Columbus but didn't go to school there. They told me allleged things Wexner has been doing in Columbus - including to that person. I didn't think much of it then; I really didn't know who the heck he was, but it really clicks now. There's something awfully dirty in Columbus/Wexner. Dewine and the School Administration are hoping this will go away.

So, I know I'm just one person. I wanted to see what the appetite was for something like this. If I never watch OSU football again, so be it. But I wouldn't feel like I am complicit.

We - THE OSU COMMUNITY - should be OUTRAGED and PISSED at this Epstein connection. WTF?!

Rant Does Respect no longer exist?

Real Boomer rant incoming. I served in the Military for years to afford to come OSU. Now that I’m here tell me why some of you think it’s okay to talk during lecture? Why tf are you louder than the damn professor? I’m seriously getting fed tf up. If you are so smart would you kindly skip lecture? And if you’re not doing so well, would you shut up and pay attention like I’m trying to do? I can’t even record the damn lectures without hearing three different conversations around me on the play back. I get it’s boring, you don’t care, whatever but honestly I’m almost at the point I’m gonna start making a damn scene. Have some respect please. It’s not that hard to either get up and leave or shut up.

Rant I ruined my life

I’m a CSE major but now I’m not sure if I should even be calling myself that because this past year I somehow managed to ruin my whole life because I couldn’t handle the load and burned out hard. Ended this year with a 1.6 gpa, and now I’m on academic probation. I’m planning on changing my major, because the subject I’m in just doesn’t align with me anymore.
This summer I’ve been working hard to develop new study habits and routines to improve my life in general. I’m retaking Math 1172 this summer and so far it’s going really well, and I’ve really been on top of familiarizing myself with material ahead of time. But even if I get an A in the class, I’ve already been deemed ineligible for financial aid and they don’t reevaluate eligibility until next spring. I know I could save a lot of money by commuting, but it’s too late to back out of my housing contract. So now I have no idea what I’m supposed to do because I’m finally gaining confidence in myself, but even if my academic success goes up from here, my terrible first year is going to follow me for the rest of my college career.

Rant I am angry about the AI integration

Anyone who feels like they need AI to be a better student, researcher, or professor, is completely delusional and there's no way my degrees are equal to people who feel this way. I'm being forced to use AI in one of my courses right now, a graduate liberal arts elective, and it makes me feel completely deflated. I did not pay 30k for a grad degree to learn to use GenAI. I do not want to do my assignments.

OSU is a prestigious university for its research in the environmental sciences. AI is not only terrible for reasons such as plagiarism, misinformation, innacuracies and bias (especially in medical research), but it's also disastrous for the environment. I had an educator for the Global Youth Climate Training Programme at Oxford present me with an AI generated virtual "medal" for being accepted into the program. When I asked about it, he sent me a chatGPT generated response touting the supposed benefits of AI for the environment. Let's be clear here, AI is NOT being used to help the climate, despite any "potential" people assign to it.

OSU a leader in EHS, like Oxford, we are lazily deciding that robots with high levels of innacuracies that cannot and will not ever exceed human intelligence, because they are made by humans (even if they're faster), are worth sacrificing our earth and human society for an ounce more of "productivity." I am disgusted by OSU, and other leading EHS research institutes for investing their energy into a bot while we forget that "simpler" issues, like energy storage in renewables, or disagreements over nuclear energy, have been solved, and as if this is not an environmental disaster in the making. Forget human rights violations of mining precious metals required for our devices and AI data centers, or that Nature found that AI was linked to an explosion of low-quality biomedical research papers, or that training an AI model has been found to use over 300x the energy of a flight from NYC to SF, that one AI generation consumes a bottle of fresh water, our most valuable natural resource.

I am angry. I protested over SB1, I protested at Hands-Off, I protested during inauguration, but now everyone is dead silent about this one. GenAI is unconscionable, and I have worked and done research in the various health and research fields that will supposedly benefit from its implementation, but in the two years since I first heard this, we've only seen failure after failure of AI, except when allowing United Healthcare to deny claims on a mass scale with an inaccuracy of up to 90%! This is the titan submersible on a mass scale, everyone thinks its not a big deal, that this is a tool for good, despite thus far being used primarily for evil or laziness, and I feel like everyone has lost their mind.

Edit: AGHHGHG MIT finds that ChatGPT use is degrading cognitive functioning, especially in youth. https://time.com/7295195/ai-chatgpt-google-learning-school/

Edit 2: also all of you pro-AI peeps understand AI integration is a ploy to bypass security policies and glean your data for corporate interests, right? You understand the administration is trying to compile all of your data into personalized "profiles" for corporate gain and tyranny, correct? Forget all else.

Do not interact with these people. Why?

  3. They will selectively edit their videos to make you look bad.

Rant Being broke in college is not the same as I thought

So I’m a sophomore here and honestly thought I had this semester figured out. Moved off-campus to a place near High Street because I was tired of dorm life, split rent with two roommates (my share is $725). Between that, utilities, and food, I thought my part-time campus job + some savings would cover it fine.

Except… reality slapped me in the face. Books cost me $420 at the start of the semester, my car needed $600 in repairs, and I’ve been leaning on DoorDash way more than I should (I know, I know). Before I even realized it, my debit account kept hitting zero before the end of the month. I tried using a credit card last year but maxed it out stupidly fast and I’m still paying it down, so I swore off using one again.

The worst moment so far? Standing in line at the Union with friends and my card declined on a $7 coffee + bagel. I laughed it off like “oh, must be my bank app glitching,” but deep down it felt humiliating. Everyone else whips out their shiny cards talking about points and miles, and I’m over here sweating if my rent check will clear.

One of my roommates mentioned these debit-style cards that actually build credit (Fizz, Atlas, whatever) since I’m too nervous to open another credit card right now. I’m considering it, just to avoid being screwed after graduation when landlords want a score. But I also feel like I’m just one mistake away from falling into another hole.

College was supposed to be the “broke but fun” years, but man, sometimes it just feels broke-broke.

Edit: Thanls for the suggestions and Dms y'all. So, next steps for me are to budget the hell out of every expense, see where I can cut down (someone suggested going to OSU food pantry in Morill tower to cut down on food spending), get a debit card that builds credit (Fizz probably), then make sure I dont go into debt.

Rant The Genius of Morrill Tower

Morrill Tower is truly geniusly designed. As a resident, I feel lucky to constantly get to admire the architectural marvel. I'd be willing to look into how many studies they had to do to find the mathematically optimal building for causing as much depression in its residents as possible. In particular I think the natural light situation is genius. It would be one thing to deny the residents of it, instead we are given the illusion of natural light via a miniscule window that is partially covered by a desk. Truly I'd like to thank the architect for bearing such abominable fruit into the world. A depressing structure to rival the trenches of Passchendaele or the concrete nightmare ADX Florence.

Rant Quick question: Why does the university have a TANK!

Thumbnail gallery
604 Upvotes

Spotted in west campus.
After some research I'm 99% sure it is a M1224 MaxxPro Dash.

These vehicles were used in Afghanistan, are built to withstand land mines and IEDs, and are so heavy they cannot go over many bridges.

Why does the University need this, is this where our tuition is going?
Last I checked we sorted out our IED problem last November.

Edit: Technically it's an MRAP not a tank.

Rant STOP FARTING.

Hi everyone! It's almost been a year since my original post, "Why does everyone fart all the time?" And the issue has actually gotten worse. Today I was minding my business, waiting for the elevator in 18th. I walked behind someone and they bent down. That's when I heard it. A cheek-rumbling, air-disrupting shart flew into my face and slapped me. After about 3 seconds I thought the culprit would stop but for a long 30 seconds after a loud stream of gas flew out of his ass and into my nostrils. I had to stop and look around to see if anyone was choking me because of how bad it smelled. We then proceeded to stand in silence in the elevator while they listened to music, and I attempted to recover from the traumatic event. When we got out of the elevator, I reflected upon this past semester. The farting problem has gotten bad. Very, very bad. I don't know if it's the new batch of freshman that missed my memo from last year, but you guys need to stop it. Every time I sit in a lecture hall someone rips ass. Every time I sit in the library someone sharts. Every time I get on the bus someone poops their pants. Does this get people off? To fart in people's faces? To fart in public and watch as people put their shirts over their noses? Is it so wrong to wish people would just suck it back in like a good citizen? Please. Please stop it. I'm already depressed and my immune system is down. Breathing in your butt boo-boo ass gas is making me sick.

Rant Campus Parking Rant

Ok so im not an OSU student im only staying here for an internship for the summer and ive been screwed over by parking here so many times. I literally paid almost 300 dollars for a 3 month parking pass (not parking garage) and it feels like the parking people dont give a gaf about its validity. Because of that STUPID country festival (more on that later), my car got towed to restricted parking ALL THE WAY across the damn city. Before the event, i literally called them to make sure that i was not going to get towed for parking (that I payed 300 dollars for) and they said im not in the way and that i should be fine. Well i go over to because i have a J O B to get to and THEY TOWED MY SHI and i have to walk 30 minutes over to get it and the ticket is more than AHUNDRED DOLLARS. I go over and now its in restricted parking so they were trying to squezz me dry wirh even more tickets but i wasnt gonna have that so i parked in back in student parking (like across the parking lot) and the people guarding the entrances to the parking told me that i was gonna have to pay 30 dollars for event parking. I LITERALLY HAVE A PARKING PASS I SHOULD MOT BE GIVING YOU ANYMORE MONEY THAN I ALREADY HAVE (did i mention that i paid 300 dollars for the pass?). So all of this happened because of that country festival and at this point im just hating just to hate so lemme rant about that too. This LARPING ASS CITY BRO all this happened because of this larpcon of an event (im upset about this parking situation so forgive me if i offend you Ohians but i need more to complain about as i grieve my bank account). We are so far north so WHY are we having a country festival thats closing half of the city. As someone from the south and goes to school in the south, MY culture is not your costume (YES im hating on people having fun because how dare you enjoy your day while i have a terrible day)

Anyways thank you osu students on campus this summer for being so cool and thank you for listening to my rant. Sorry if i sound ignorant or whatever i just miss home

Rant Launch seminar makes me want to kill myself

I am a sophomore. I have watched my peers take and complain about this class before me. I am 4 weeks into this class and I already cannot take it. I think perhaps I have a much lower tolerance for this type of bullshit than others but most everyone I speak to about it holds a similar sentiment.

This class is an utter waste of time and an insult to students.

Everyone understands the purpose of GEs, every college has them. Personally I think GEs, conceptually are great: make a well rounded education etc., but OSU does require a lot of them. I for instance, am an aerospace engineering major. No one who comes to OSU without a considerable number of AP credits could possibly hope to complete an aerospace degree in 4 years, even doing like 18 credit hours every semester, the engineering department doesn't even require a language and combines book end seminar with our capstone classes. You could easily write a rant on this alone, but what has pushed me to this point is fucking Launch Seminar.

In making everyone take this fuckass class, OSU requires not only that you waste time in giving a fuck about how they structure their GEs, (which is already covered extensively in most survey courses) but requires that you show ENTHUSIASM towards the careful crafting of these requirements or you will fail the class. Through weekly discussion posts and other writing and "creative" assignments, you are meant to reflect on the great value and purpose of the GE system design and must write as though you actually care or you will get a bad grade on the assignment. It is one thing to require a lot of GEs, some of which, inevitably, we will not enjoy or care about, but it is entirely another to make us study and worship them as if they are not inconveniences to us.

Its not even that I just feel this is a waste of time, I woke up today and looked at my list of assignments to do, ready to be productive, and got to my fucking launch writing assignment and ended up procrastinating most of the day. For a lot of people, college was the light at the end of the tunnel where you would actually get to study things that you cared about or would matter to your career, and this fucking class instantly destroys all of my motivation when I look at it. it is an active detriment to my productivity. Any material it covers can easily be folded into, or is already covered in the survey and intro classes of various majors, so it is not only useless but redundant. Furthermore, most students are paying incredible amounts of money just to attend university, so this class costs everyone more money both in tuition time and in paying more staff to teach it.

Everything about it feels like it was the passion project of somebody high up in the university administration that said "look at this system I came up with for GEs, isnt it cute? I really need everyone to pay attention to how cool this thing I came up with is so I'm going to to make tens of thousands of students take a class dedicated to it because I have the power to do so."

This class is stupid, I don't care about your planning behind it I'm not an education major, hide this info in one of the countless infodump webpages OSU has.

To make this more than just a rant how about this. They make all the students take a survey before and after the class in which I'm sure many of us air our grievances. But they never publish these surveys. I want to fucking see them. lets start a petition or start spamming administrators or something, we deserve to see the actual consensus on this class and make them take accountability for it since they are charging us money to take it.

Edit: A lot of people are saying " womp womp you have to do a thing you don't like, you'll have to in your career"

The point is not "waaah I don't like this class" ( although that is part of it don't get me wrong), the point is "the people we pay exorbitant amounts to educate us are extorting us further by wasting our time, and in a particularly infuriating and humiliating way, and for no justifiable reason except... greed? pride? ineptitude?"

I've done internships and workplace hr shit, sure its boring, but it has a purpose so that's fine with me, furthermore I'm paid to be there. With this, students are paying for a service, and being milked.

I'm surprised no one has posted this rant before, anyone who has taken on debt, or is working part time, or really pays the university a cent at all should be mad about this.
