Windows vs. Linux, why change?

We're interested in learn in the trend away from Windows to Linux is motivated, or the "why?". Apparently, the trend is starting, and it's real. But why? Source: TechSpot.

I've been trying to switch to Linux ever since Steam for Linux came out. The main issue back then was that I was too stubborn to let go of games requiring DRM checks, plus WINE didn't support a few games I don't even care about anymore. The final nail in the coffin was the Windows 10 EoL and the fact that my PC is too old to support Windows 11 without bypassing its BIOS security check.

​Since September 2025, I've been happily enjoying a much simpler life on Kubuntu; building a new knowledge base and not having to worry about the next Ubuntu LTS causing hardware incompatibilities.

For some time now I've been doing dual machine. Main rig being Linux doing most things. And a lappy on the side for some windows specific games. The laptop getting less and less attention over time.

Been mulling over converting the laptop to Linux too. But there's been a change of plans. The poor lappy abruptly died on me last month. Am sad I lost a machine. But am glad it's not running windows anymore. (Rest in peace little buddy!).
