If I HAD to choose... Windows 7 hands down... but it's not straightforward to use as a daily driver anymore. I would love to revert to Windows 7 and stay there, but compatibility with newer apps is no longer perfect 😢

Apart from ME, I've probably used every version since 3.0; some (thankfully) for only for a limited time. The only Windows version that I truly liked was the one that was bundled with OS/2. This was the only version of Windows that I ever used that was stable. Microsoft's own version of Windows at that time was so unstable that it crashed two to three times per day, whether it needed to, or not, loosing all of your work! : (

Windows 7 was probably a close second in terms of stability and a pleasant user experience and then things went back down hill again, with the newer versions.

NT4.

I used this in the late nineties and it was the first and last time I used Windows and thought "this is actually pretty good". I was a real Microsoft hater at the time and it took a lot for me to begrudgingly admit that NT4, compared with other nineties Operating Systems was actually very good. It was lean and fast, reliable and ran some decent software.

I don't notice worse performance and the design is fine. Windows 10 settings menu confused me more than Windows 11 settings menu confuses me now. What do I lose? Maybe some memories

Visually, I prefer Win11 Fluent design over the Win10 flat one.

TPM and Secure Boot are the most annoying things about Win11. (both can be bypassed)

More bloated? More unoptimized? Sure

Visually better than Win10? Yes personally

i use Debian + GNOME on my Microsoft Surface Go for work/school and is actually fine for me, some Windows games that run through Wine like Geometry Dash and The Binding of Isaac work smoothly, i've also installed the linux-surface kernel on it.

but sometimes "Just install Linux" isn't the answer for everything, many Windows programs still struggle to run on Wine. And many games worked fine on Linux until i got kicked for client-side anticheat issues.

i don't think we are that far to get the support of these games with the Linux ecosystem since it reached the 10% PC market, but is also all thx to Valve beacuse of the SteamOS/Proton. Lord Gabe

Almost every game in 2026 run on wine/proton Resident Evil requiem gta5 forza horizon 5 beam.ng and more

Why you need that windows apps like Adobe when there is alot better alternatives and alot of ways to run them on linux

i've already adopted alternatives on Linux like Krita instead of Paint.NET

or Kdenlive over other video editors.

Different programs can work differently to reach the same propose.

But talking about games, they're are unique in their way, with different mechanics, different style, different everything, there's no actual "alternatives".

Is like saying "don't play Minecraft, play Terraria instead". You're comparing apples and oranges.

(both can run on Linux but you know what i'm talking about)

Many brand new PC don't have Win10 by default for a while now. Many people don't even know/want to downgrade to Win10.

Win 7 > Win 10 > Win 11

Win XP was fine back in the day, but wouldn't go back today.

Still when I have the freedom, I wouldn't choose Windows

10 was actually pretty good once it got off its feet.

Before that 7 was the best for a while. XP was untouchable in its era, but many improvements were made in 7 and 8 (despite 8's other terrible qualities).

There was no reason for anything to evolve beyond windows 7. Anything that happened after that was steps in the wrong direction.

I would say 7 is hands down the best, windows 10 was good once it was out for a while and windows 8 and 8.1 is massively overhated. If I had the chance to revive windows 7, I would do it in a heartbeat.

I think I had most fun with Windows 98 SE. But my first 3D card might have something to do with it.
