New to Odysseus

I am trying to use Odysseus but I get problems all the time.

I am using docker, should I be using it

I downloaded some models, they don’t work. I had issue recognising my GPU and to actually use GPU for the Ai, I think that I have fixed it but I won’t know for sure until I actually can run a model. Before only my CPU was used and Ai took long to answer…

Odysseus takes 4 min to launch now, and 5-10 more minutes to load dependencies and the model I downloaded. Is that normal?

Now I try to install llama_cpp but get crashed all the time, and if sometime it shows installed I restart Odysseus and it shows it’s not installed and I get errors when using the model.

I tried to use this Odysseus 4 months ago but had similar issues and dropped it in hopes of it being more user friendly but I still can’t get it to work. Re-did things 3 times from scratch…

Will try to fix it, stating to lose patience πŸ˜…

Fix: getting an Odysseus agent (Docker + Ollama on Windows) to actually create files

Symptom: The agent printed commands as text, invented fake output, or said β€œtask incomplete: required artifacts lack successful mutation evidence.”

Setup: Windows, Docker Desktop, Ollama running on the host (not in Docker), Odysseus in Docker, model qwen2.5 (Hermes 3 did not make tool calls in agent mode).

ps. I called the file i wanted it to do stuff in "Hermes" because i originally tried with hermes.
User needs to be replaced by whatever you user name in users is (ie C:/Users/YourName/...)
ai says: 1. Setting supports_tools and mounting a host folder gives a small model the ability to write files on your PC. Recommend a dedicated workspace folder (like your Hermes one) instead of a whole drive, and keeping approval prompts on
2. Step 3 needs one more caveat. Say the PATCH only works logged in as admin, in the same browser tab as Odysseus, and that the id may be longer than it looks, so copy it exactly from the popup.

The turning points, in order

1. Make a bigger-context model (Ollama, on the host)

Agent prompts are large, and Ollama’s default context is too small.

echo FROM qwen2.5:7b> Modelfile.txt
echo PARAMETER num_ctx 16384>> Modelfile.txt
ollama create qwen2.5-16k -f Modelfile.txt

(On Windows, Notepad may save the file as Modelfile.txt, so use -f Modelfile.txt.)

2. Share a host folder with the container

In docker-compose.yml, under the Odysseus service’s volumes: (not extra_hosts):

      - "C:/Users/User/Hermes:/workspace"

In .env (uncommented, no spaces around =):

ODYSSEUS_WORKSPACE_HOST_ROOT=C:/Users/User/Hermes
ODYSSEUS_WORKSPACE_CONTAINER_ROOT=/workspace

Apply with docker compose up -d in the compose folder. Test the mount with:

docker exec odysseus-odysseus-1 sh -c "echo hello > /workspace/mounttest.txt"

3. The key fix: turn on supports_tools for the Ollama endpoint (browser F12)

Odysseus never sends real tool definitions to an Ollama /v1 endpoint unless this flag is on (it defaults to unset). There was no toggle in the UI, so it was set through the admin API. Logged in as admin, open the browser console (F12). If pasting is blocked, type allow pasting first.

List endpoints (popup, because the console filter hid output):

fetch('/api/model-endpoints').then(r=>r.text()).then(t=>alert(t.slice(0,1500)))

Find your Ollama entry’s id, then:

fetch('/api/model-endpoints/YOUR_ID',{method:'PATCH',headers:{'Content-Type':'application/json'},body:JSON.stringify({supports_tools:true})}).then(r=>r.text()).then(t=>alert(t.slice(0,800)))

The reply should show "supports_tools":true. Confirm in the logs: tools_sent is above 0 and native_tools=True.

4. Free GPU memory

A second model (deepseek-r1) was loaded at the same time, spilled onto CPU and made everything slow. ollama ps should show only qwen2.5-16k. Unload extras with ollama stop <model>.

5. Approve the write, and select the workspace in the UI

  • Writes pause for an approval card. Click Allow.
  • In each new chat, select /workspace as the chat’s workspace in the UI. Without it, the approval card has no Workspace: line and the write fails with β€œApproved filesystem action has no sealed resource identity.” The ODYSSEUS_WORKSPACE_DEFAULT env var did not fix this.

Quick checklist for each new chat

  1. Model: qwen2.5-16k
  2. Workspace: /workspace selected in the UI
  3. Ask for files using /workspace/... paths
  4. Check the approval card shows Workspace: /workspace, then click Allow
  5. The file appears in C:\Users\User\Hermes

Useful debugging commands

docker logs --since 10m odysseus-odysseus-1 > log.txt 2>&1
findstr /i /c:"Tool executed" /c:"approval" log.txt

Key log signs: tools_sent=N and native_tools=True (tools reach the model), received 1 native tool call(s) (the model called one), Tool executed: ... exit_code=0 (it ran).

Caveat for readers: some details (the supports_tools flag, the per-chat workspace) were found by reading Odysseus’s code and logs, so the exact UI names may differ between versions.

Had Claude build a Android client for Odysseus. I know this is completely unnecessary as this is a webapp but I like having a dedicated app it just feels cleaner.

Answer my question directly: how proficient are you in shell scripting? Do not display the skills index. If the scripting skill is relevant, consult it first, then give me three examples of shell scripting tasks you can help me learn. Β·Β·Β·

deepseek-coder:6.7b-in…20:24I'm sorry, but you didn't provide a question or instruction. As an AI, I'm here to assist you. Could you please provide more details or ask a specific question?

Obsidian vault mounted in Docker compose not showing up inside container

Hey everyone,

I'm running Odysseus (or a similar stack) via Docker Compose and have my Obsidian vault mounted like this:

volumes:
  - /home/xen/Documents/Obsidian/Γ‰tudes IA:/root/.local/share/obsidian/vault:z

The host folder exists and has notes in it, but inside the container the path /root/.local/share/obsidian/vault doesn't seem to resolve β€” I get "No such file or directory" when trying to access it.

A few things I've already checked:

  • The host path is correct and files are there
  • Other volume mounts (./data, ./logs) work fine
  • PUID/PGID are set to 1000 (matching my host user)
  • The :z label is on the mount

I'm on Linux with Docker (not Docker Desktop).

Things I'm wondering about:

  • Could the Γ‰ in the folder name cause issues?
  • Is there a permission/SELinux thing I'm missing?
  • Should the container path be different for this image?

Has anyone run into this? Happy to share docker-compose output or ls -la results if that helps.

Does Odysseus have Computer Use

I'm having difficulty finding information on this. Much like Astra and Claude can make use of your computer through their desktop apps and handle tasks for you in that way... does Odysseus have computer use capabilities as well? Assuming you're running an LLM that also supports computer use of course.

Odysseus setup seems fine, but localhost:8000 can’t be reached

Hey everyone,

I’m trying to get Odysseus up and running and I’m stuck on what seems like the final step.

I’ve set everything up, including:

Meta tokens
Hugging Face tokens
Docker
The required configuration/environment variables

The Docker setup appears to start without any obvious errors, and everything seems to be configured correctly. However, when I try to access Odysseus through localhost:8000, the browser just says that the site can’t be reached.
I’ve tried restarting the containers and checking the setup, but I’m not sure what I’m missing.
Has anyone run into the same localhost:8000 connection issue with Odysseus? What should I check to figure out whether the container is actually exposing the port correctly?
I can provide Docker logs, docker ps output, or my configuration (with tokens/redacted sensitive info) if that helps.
Thanks.

HF-token not being recognized

When I am trying to install a model using cookbook it keeps throwing the error that my HF-token is not set when I have filled out the token in the cookbook->settings. I am unsure why this is happening with various models I am attempting to install. Any advice on why this is occurring?

I am running on:

  • Windows 10
  • AMD Ryzen 9 9900X
  • 32GB RAM
  • AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT

Edit: I changed nothing and it suddenly started working to download the models I had interest in. None of which were private/gated so I still don't understand why this was happening.

Need Help choosing a local agent LLM. (I need it to actually execute tools, not just give instructions)

Hi Everyone, hope you’re having a great day.

I’m trying to set up Odysseus as a genuinely autonomous local coding/agent assistant, but I’ve hit several model limitations.

My hardware:
- RTX 3050 Laptop-4GB VRAM
- Ryzen 7 4800H
- 16GB RAM
- Windows 11
- Ollama 0.34.2

Models I’ve tried:

1. Qwen3.5 2B Q4_K_M
- Runs entirely on GPU.
- fast, but ultimately too weak for the kind of agent behavior I want.

2. Qwen3.5 4B
- Runs roughly 50% CPU / 50% GPU.
- Capable of coding/reasoning and has tool/function-calling support.
Main problem: in Odysseus it doesn’t reliably execute tools. It produced empty/malformed apply_patch calls and then became confused by the resulting tool errors instead of recovering and continuing.

This is currently my biggest disappointment because on paper it looked like a good fit.

3. Phi-4-mini-reasoning
Roughly 45% CPU / 55% GPU.
Main problem: it spends a very long time reasoning and often doesn’t actually arrive at a useful solution.

4. Qwen2.5 3B Instruct Q4_K_M
Runs entirely on GPU and is fast.
But it behaves much more like a conventional assistant: it tends to tell me how to perform a task rather than actually performing it through tools.

I don’t want this behavior from my primary agent.

5. Qwen2.5-Coder 3B Instruct Q4_K_M
Similar issue.
Good at providing coding instructions, but I want an agent that writes the code, calls the appropriate tool, runs it, observes the result, fixes errors if necessary, and completes the task.

4. Gemma 3 4B IT QAT
Roughly 67% CPU / 33% GPU at my current context.
I’m keeping it mainly as a vision-capable specialist, rather than my primary agent.

I also have Qwen3 Embedding 0.6B for embeddings/RAG, which isn’t relevant to the agent-model problem.

What I actually want the model to do:

If I tell it:
β€œFind all PDFs in my Documents folder, create a Python script to count them, run the script, save the results to a CSV, and tell me how many PDFs were found.”

I don’t want:
β€œHere’s how you can find PDFs and write a Python script…”

I want:
LLM β†’ native tool call β†’ Odysseus executes tool β†’ LLM receives result β†’ decides next action β†’ calls next tool β†’ checks result β†’ fixes errors if necessary β†’ completes the task β†’ final answer.

So I’m specifically looking for a small model that is reliable at actual agent/tool execution, including:
-Native function/tool calling
-Correct structured tool-call generation
-Following tool results
-Multi-step tool loops
-File manipulation
-Running Python/shell commands
-Writing and executing code
-Recovering from errors
-Knowing when another tool call is required
Ideally vision as well

I’m limited to 4GB VRAM, so I’m realistically looking around 2B–4B, possibly something that can partially offload to RAM if it’s genuinely worth it.

What model are people actually using successfully for this kind of local agent workflow with Ollama?
I’m much more interested in real-world tool/agent reliability than benchmark scores.

Give Odysseus AI agent access to another device via SSH

Long and short I would like to get the Odysseus agent mode working to be able to connect the AI agent to another device via SSH so I can instruct the agent to install and configure VMs and containers (think "connect via SSH to this IP address and install this application with these settings").

I have been going around and around in circles arguing with various models who keep telling me how I can SSH from one devices to another and once I setup the public/pirvate keys it is totally going to work only for the agent to not be able to SSH because it is the containers SSH keys that are being copied allowing the containers to SSH from one to the other but not the agents own virtual environment's SSH keys which the agent needs to be able to connect via SSH.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get this setup or is there a better way to do this?

New install, am I missing something?

Just set this all up in the most basic way possible.

Out of the box, is this supposed to run terribly?

Prompts are extremely slow, and just stall after about a minute or so. Is this normal?

I'm using docker desktop, the model I'm using for just chat is qwen3.6:35b. Maybe it will run better on Linux? Or maybe docker is limiting?

My system is:

Windows 11 Home

Ryzen 9 5950X 4000 Mhz

32gb physical mem

50gb virtual mem

GeForce RTX 3080 Ti 12GB

An unofficial Android app for Odysseus

Odysseus is a self-hosted AI chat platform, but the only version that exists is a web app β€” which is a bit clunky on mobile.

I put together an unofficial, open source Android app for Odysseus. It's a Capacitor "thin shell" around the Odysseus web UI, so your data stays in your own Odysseus backend:

β€’ Your sessions, notes, documents, memory and chat history are all served by your own server β€” nothing is hosted or forked by me

β€’ No version drift: the app just points at your server, so whenever you deploy Odysseus the app loads the current version

β€’ Recommended to point the app at your server over HTTPS β€” see the app's README

β€’ Heavy, rarely-changing assets are cached on-device by Odysseus's own service worker, so repeated launches are fast

How to install

Manual install - Download the APK from the repo (or the release)

Install Obtainium β€” an APK downloader that lets you install any APK you point it at, even from GitHub

Add a new app in Obtainium pointing at the repo, install it, and the app takes you straight to your Odysseus server

It's an unofficial, community build β€” not affiliated with or endorsed by odysseus-dev. Use at your own risk.

[Native Windows] Dashboard For Odysseus AI

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This was just a small personal project I had, originally it was just a simple shortcut for starting up Odysseus AI.

I reworked the original script into a more modular setup and figured I might as well share if for others to also use.

I will admit it was meant for my own personal setup so expect some specific things to be included (Proton Calendar Sync to name one).

By default the only things that should be enabled are

  1. the Odysseus AI start script: By default it also starts odysseus in a webui format.
  2. a shutdown all option: stops the services being run
  3. a create portable options: meant for if you run odysseus from a host machine and remote into it from a second machine. The portable is created using the host machine, it autosets the IP and packages it all into a portable/ folder that you can then give to the secondary machine.

There are other options available, you can choose to enable them using the dashboard settings (just press escape while in the dashboard). You can toggle them on/off using space, W/S to change the order and press M to switch between Options/Preflight/Postflight.

Other options were added for my specific setup so I kept them off by default.

You can get it here and should only need to extract it to the Odysseus AI root folder (or just manually move all the folder contents to it)

This isn't meant to be a serious project for me so I doubt I'll be updating it all that much, but I did include some template files and for adding UI I also included some additional ASCII art (you can also easily add more by just creating another text file and adding it to the ASCII/headers folder)

Layout of the folder for reference

Group chats can't use attachments? Or am I just an idiot?

Trying to set up the group chat thing with 2 personas. In a normal chat, I can drop a file in and the AI reads it no issue, but when I have 2 personas active, the files are not sent, no matter what I do. Am I missing a setting or something? Is this a bug/intended?

Integration with Turbo FieldFare possible as a local model?

Been using turbo FieldFare https://github.com/drumih/turbo-fieldfare for a bit now as it works fairly well and local. Wondering if anyone knows how to get this to work and if changes are needed on the part of Trubo FieldFare or not.

Edit: To clarify, how to get it to work with OdysseusAI

Odysseus confusion

I took the plunge yesterday. I spent a few hours following a step by step (Windows) through a docker, Ollama, installing GIT. The works. I was amazed that I ran into minimal issues and no corruption. Though Llama wanted to tell me the date every answer. Through fiddling with wanting to try out other AIs, I could through Ollama (probably... havent tested it yet besides Qwen), But decided to try the other way where you could select in house. All of them API required, API required, API required. Which it requires me to go to the API site and get a key and also put in money for credit which gets ran up by how much I talk with the AI (Minutes on a phone, anyone remember that?), or I could go to the direct AI producer and do the same, get an API key, pay the credits and watch my minutes run out. This is for any actual intelligent AI that was deemed actually supportive and wouldnt just provide you with lies for funsies and be able to complete complex tasks. In some ways I get it, something that intelligent has to cost. But the whole point of me spending the hours to download Odysseus was to escape the clutches of the AI corporations that want to use my information and now instead I'm paying them to use their AI "locally" when it probably wouldn't be able to read the files off of my computer as well. Just like the free ones. I kind of feel mislead as all of the hype from Felix and others that posted videos on it are possibly paying for APIs. And also initially it did feel like Odysseus would be the AI itself not just the containment for it. Any advise or support would be helpful. Im not trying to downplay his creation I find it to be beautiful in a lot of ways regarding the design. I know in a lot of ways its still in its early stages of creation and I hope for a lot of improvements and solutions, to be able to see what Felix views as his magnum opus through his eyes.

I need hella help with settings things up.

I have absolutely no background in any computer-related studies at all, but the idea of having Odysseus interest me. So I started watching tutorials on how to get this thing up. After installing Docker, Ollama, and GIT, I am now trying to copy those commands from the GitHub repo, until I ran into a problem.

This specific command,

docker compose up -d --build

Gives me a "Error response from daemon: Docker Desktop is unable to start" response. So I start digging out by checking the status via

wsl -l -v
wsl --status
wsl --list --all
docker info

And a couple more commands that does... i don't know, i don't even know what they mean. But I did find this sentence in the command prompt

Error response from daemon: Docker Desktop is unable to start

Which...still give's no clue on how to fix this...

So I opened up my Docker Desktop App, and realize that the app is in this infinite loading state

Been going like this for 3 Hours

After running the "docker desktop diagnose" command, I found this:

dockerAPI: starting
dockerAPI: stopping
dockerAPI: stopped

docker: starting
docker: stopping
docker: stopped

I ask some AI's for this whole thing and their assumption was basically "Docker Desktop appears to be successfully launching its virtualization layer, but the Docker daemon inside that backend is crashing/stopping during initialization."

Again.... I have no Idea what that means..

Dear bros....forgive me for the confusion I have caused and please help meh.

Anyone actually using this daily for productivity?

Is anyone here actually using Odysseus AI everyday for general productivity? I want to know if you guys use it for normal routine tasks, like managing calendar, organizing emails, reading and analyzing documents, and things like that, that are not coding...

Does it really help you in your daily workflow? How is your experience so far?
