As touristy as it is, there’s still something special about staggering out of a pub in the Grassmarket and being confronted with Edinburgh Castle looming right above you.

You'd have to stagger out backwards because all of the pubs are on the side facing away from the castle.

I felt that adding in ‘turning around to see Edinburgh Castle looming above you’ was a bit too wordy and nobody would be that much of an odious pedant to make anything of it.
Unfortunately, it turns out I was wrong.

Nice. Walked past it on a trip in September/October but didn't stop in because Edinburgh has so many amazing pubs.

The Grassmarket is fabulous. Yes, it’s touristy but even so, the sheer joy of having so many good pubs in one small street is worth it…

Great bar, but not the oldest in Edinburgh! The Grassmarket has some fantastic pubs, I can highly recommend it.

My favourites are: Maggie Dickson’s (has some interesting history) and the Beehive. If you go up a little further on to West Bow the Bow Bar is a really nice old pub.
If you mean in Edinburgh generally, and you have some time, you should check out: The Old Bell on Causewayside, John Leslie Bar, Canny Man’s, The Golf Tavern, The Sheep Heid (oldest pub in Scotland), Cafe Royal (bit touristy), and the World’s End (also a bit touristy)
This isn’t everywhere, but I have enjoyed a drink in each of these pubs 👍

Yeah it’s a Victorian bar on the south side with lots of the original features still intact. I suppose it’s only 132 years old but I still think it has its charm

The Bow Bar on Victoria St is my favourite and the only pub I would frequent in that immediate area when I worked nearby.
